Evil murdering terrorist who killed countless numbers of innocent law abiding people. Pity he didn't take Gerry Adams with him as well.

Piers Morgan likening the murderous piece of filth to Nelson Mandella. Apart from both being dead that's ridiculous I disagree with some of Mandela's methods but his cause had justification that McGuiness's never had.

A hugely complex character. Yes, he was a murdering bastard in his youth - and of course he remains responsible for those murders long after they happened.
On the other hand, without him, the (relative) peace in Northern Ireland that we have now would probably not have happened and Sinn Fein would still have been pursuing their ambitions with a gun rather than with the ballot box and thousands more people would have died.
I think Colin Parry (the father of Tim, killed in the Warrington bombings) has made a lot of sense in his comments this morning. He doesn't forgive McGuinness for his terrorism during the troubles but he respects his efforts for the peace process in his later years.
Ending terrorism is often a messy process requiring huge compromise, thankfully McGuinness, Sinn Fein, Paisley and the Unionist community eventually recognised this.

If we didn't sometimes get into dialogue with these people then the consequences would be even more catastrophic. He actually formed a genuine friendship with Ian Paisley in later years I read, imagine the thought of that 30 years ago? Whilst I wouldn't go as far as Piers Morgan and compare McGuinness to Nelson Mandela there are parallels with their early lives.....

All that may be true, but we'd still be employing troops on the corner of every Belfast street and getting blown up on the streets of Britain if we hadn't put all that aside for the greater good....sometimes you have to dance with the devil

Apart from both being dead that's ridiculous I disagree with some of Mandela's methods but his cause had justification that McGuiness's never had. Come on FYD, That's blinkered Not at all a united ireland is a decision for the people of ireland to make. If you wanted an united ireland there was a choice the SDLP or the IRA, i'm not religious but I hope there is a special place in hell for all those who choose the IRA. If he really wanted to make atonement the families of the disappeared would be told where to find their bodies so they could have their funerals and the IRA wouldn't be using the devolved government to pursue british troops after all this time.
