whatever your views on Tony Pulis - to try to dismiss his achievement in getting us up and keeping us up, is completely ridiculous. when we lost away to Palace in '08, how people really thought we'd get up at all, never mind automatically..?
and when we did the view was we'd "do a derby". not only did we not "do a derby", we became the blueprint for newly promoted teams. yes things got stale, yes the Uefa cup run ended horribly, yes we signed some dross - but show me manager that hasn't gone stale, cocked up a cup game or signed some dogs...

As far as I was aware Pulis was only outspent by Man C and Chelsea over a five year period, spending around £90 million in the process, and still the 'football' was, by and large, shit. or about 18 Million a season. Wow! Liverpool, ManU, and a host of others spent less than that? Something doesn't sound right. But, regardless of how much he spent vs some other bloke/team, who cares? He kept us up and built the groundwork and now Hughes has built further transforming us into a top ten Premier League Team! Who in their right mind at the start of the 2006/2007 season would have even dreamed that we would be here. Probably more importantly, at that time, who, if offered 3 top ten Prem finishes in a row, plus an FA Cup final and placed 9th again in mid January, would have turned that down? Yet here we are with people denigrating the 2 managers who brought us here. As the thread title says ... Enough Already! If you're not enjoying the trip, get off the bus! Yes they did. I am enjoying the trip thanks, far more than under Pulis, I bought a season ticket as soon as he'd gone. Many of us argued at the time that there was no need to strangle the life out of games in order to survive, not with the resources he had at his disposal, we were met with a chorus of 'Charltons' which as we now know, was utter bollocks.

If there's a dramatic fall in season ticket renewals this season then the general support will make you right, I guess we'll see in due course.

I find losing at home to the likes of West Brom (last season) and Hull (League Cup) much more degrading, and particularly frustrating and irksome if Stoke have actually been the better team by all the other measurables except goals. As fans we have to take the rough with the smooth (including even ManU fans!) and enjoy the moments like Shaq's brace at Hull and Arni's brace last Saturday. When Crouch's went in on Saturday, I thought any minute now I'm going to wake up!

You might want to check the sentiment on the tickets and travel section on here before putting your money where your mouth is tho' ;)

Possibly, but an overwhelming majority who, whether they like him (or any of our great managers) or not, appreciate what he did for Stoke. that's my experiece - people need to remember that this place it NOT reflective of the wider support Thank God!

Dear god. I hope you don't go around thinking many Stoke supporters share the rather unfortunate views you expressed above. It simply isn't the case. You don't think a significant section of Stoke fans can't stand Tony Pulis. How long have you been under that brick. I think there is a heck of a difference between some not enjoying the football so much towards the end of his period and the vitriol one of your posts evidenced. The huge majority will always value his time and efforts as one of Stoke's best ever managers.

Depends how you define 'many', I certainly know a few. Didn't affect my view of him but he certainly did his popularity in general no favours with his antics on his return. Nothing he has ever done/not done merits the antipathy expressed in a couple of those posts. Bottom line is he was very good news for my football club and I thank him for his efforts. Not to do so whilst being a supporter of a SCFC is frankly nothing short of bizarre in my book.

I spent a fortune and a lot of hours travelling up and down the country to be bored shitless by his 'football' and I remain unconvinced that he was the only manager capable of getting us promoted given our new found wealth and I certainly don't believe we *had* to play the way he tried to convince us we did in order to survive.

What a ridiculous & pointless thread this has become. In 15 pages, we've gone from arguing about recent performances under Hughes to debating Pulis' legacy.
Pulis was a great manager for us & so is Hughes & they both rank among our greatest ever managers. Lets just leave it at that.

I don't mind people bemoaning the death of football under Pulis if that's what they felt but lets not make up stuff about entertainment levels this past year eh? It's been fucking shit and whether they renew season tickets or not I know a load of people who feel exactly the same.

If people slag off Pulis' uninspiring displays of football, then NO-ONE is apparently allowed to mention his previous few years successes with us before it became dull to counteract that criticism.. he's just an arsehole regardless it would seem. Basically, it's people who aren't intelligent enough to see their own hypocrisy. Fuck knows why we're even debating Pulis on a "Hughes out" thread though.

Anyone of us on here can name multiple managers, who given money to spend have failed. Pulis did not have a huge war chest to get us up, nor did anyone outside Stoke expect him to keep us up. Say what you will, He and Hughes are the men who achieved the successes above. Look through history, Do people say Matt Busby was a great manager or do they say (does anyone even remember who owned them) Louis Edwards was a great Chairman? As far as "walk on water" name even one single Stoke manager who did. These guys deserve our gratitude and respect for what they have helped Stoke achieve. Indeed just as we can give a list of managers who have succeeded without being given money, it's a lot longer list for those managers not given money who fail though. My point was though that without Coates's money we would not be where we are now regardless of who managed us which is quite a neat bit of symmetry because we were where we were when he came back largely due to him not putting money in...... As for your Matt Busby point 5 league championships, 2 FA Cups and a European Cup does tend to outrank an away defeat for the reserves at Valencia. Absolutely! We are were we are today because of (in no particular order) Peter Coates, Tony Pulis, Mark Hughes. Let's get on with the apparently extremely hard job of enjoying our success! C'mon you mighty Peanuts Potters!

That's rather odd for someone who brought success to the club. He was respected and did a great job in getting us in the PL and the Cup Final. To me though, his methods were abhorrent and from what I've heard about him since it rather cements my view that he is a colossal wanker.

Pulis over his two stints in charge dragged us out of the endless doldrums we found ourselves in - let's not forget when he joined not only was the Premier League just something that some faraway clubs were involved in, but we were also looking certs for a plummet to the third tier.
Pulis sorted all that out and then got us hanging around with the big boys. I predicted we'd gone up a couple of seasons too early, that we wouldn't be ready....however I was happily proved wrong. The ensuing few seasons were the best of times for all sorts of reasons. Then it all went a bit stale and reluctantly I had to agree it was time for him to move on.
In came Hughes and confounded expectations by pushing us up a notch or two in terms of the type of football played and also the league position. No arguing with three ninth place finishes, it's an awesome achievement and one of which Sparky can be justifiably very proud.
Both the two managers mentioned above are all time Stoke City heroes in my eyes. You still get fans who bang on about Lou Bloody Macari, well I'm sorry these two far outshine anything he did for us. In the future we should have statues of them both outside the ground!
That said - it is to me becoming obvious that we're back in the same sort of rut we were at the end of the Pulis reign and I'm not certain that Sparky is able to turn it round. I'm sure he'll keep us up, but I suspect a lower league finish is on the cards and frankly the football we're playing and the team itself is just....well, not exactly healthy at the moment. The way the rest of the season pans out will dictate what happens, but I really think Hughes will be gone in the summer, as things stand right now. I hope he turns all this round properly because I like him - but I liked Pulis and yet he still ended up having to go.

Its idiots like you that are wrong with this club. What the hell do you want? Maybe you would be happy with going on away days to London rd and Gigg lane or perhaps the usual shit trip to the besot, shouting for players like Paul Williams, Darryl Russell and Carl Asaba. Honestly, to hear you lot moan about the 'state's stoke is an embarrassment.
Manger will very good pedigree Best financial position we have ever been in 9th in the PL Quality players - The type I never thought I would see here
It was the same at the cup game at wolves. Surrounded by utter dick heads whose soul objective was to criticise every stoke player they could whenever a mistake was made. Apparently, Pieters is a Dutch cun$. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. And then the second went in and the exodus started. Supporters? What a load of bollocks. People need to get a grip and realise just how lucky we are to be supporting Stoke at this time.

Where is the evidence that 'large swathes' would not have renewed in 2013? The only thing to come out of the club was that 'early birds' were down on the record sales of the previous year. Pulis wasn't sacked because of season ticket sales and nor will Hughes. If you really want to go with the bums on seats argument though look at those who have paid for season tickets who just can't be arsed this season. Every game is all but sold out officially yet there are hundreds of empty seats all over.
