I've read quite a few threads in the past 24 hours and I can't find anyone asking the obvious question. Where was he yesterday? When we have Arnautovic out, why on earth is he on the bench? It is complete madness. And why was he not brought on at half time with Fuchs on a yellow?
I'm thinking it must be punishment for his tantrum on Wednesday? If so that is really not good news because he could have made the difference yesterday. LMH is leaving more just as perplexed as TP often did.

He deserved dropping after 2 awful performances.
Next we will be accusing Hughes of the JFK assassination.
His handing of Shaqiri was spot on in my book. His performances have dropped off a cliff so he was rightly benched.
The mystery is more about what Ramadam has to do to get a game.
Im gonna defend Hughes here though. For his in-game management faults he does tend to drop players that are not on form regardless of their pricetag.

Make of it what you will. mmm...in reality there is nothing even remotely 'hectic' about the xmas fixtures, 10 days until we play again then 4 days after that. I just think Sparky put him on the naughty step yesterday.

I think it was the right decision to leave him out of the starting line-up yesterday after a couple of sub-par performances. Having said that, the decision to not bring him on in the second half with Fuchs already on a yellow was a strange one.

For his in-game management faults he does tend to drop players that are not on form regardless of their pricetag. Nobody is accusing Hughes of such things. Looking in from the outside though, this seems like a really dumb move. Obviously we are not resting him. With a 9-game break after this fixture, that explanation is obviously a fiction. Beating Leicester is also more important than getting something from Anfield. So the only reason he has missed this game is to punish him for his tantrum on Wednesday? We are punishing ourselves by failing to use one of our best players in a game where we needed him most. If Arnautovic was not suspended, maybe we could get away with it. But having neither of our two wingers available is really difficult, why impose that situation on yourself? Even if you felt it was a good idea to bench him as some form of punishment, you would surely bring him on in the second half, with Fuchs on a yellow and us struggling to get the third goal and kill the game off? I really don't think we are that good that we can avoid to have such talent on the bench. Perhaps his last two performances weren't great, but that is true of many other players who are in the side. Against Southampton we were playing with ten men and he was subbed in any case. I wouldn't judge him on the basis of Arsenal away. In the previous two games against Burnley and Watford he was playing well, so I'm not sure why you think his form has dropped off a cliff?. His overall contribution this season has been decent. It was his freekick that rescued a point at Middlesborough, and two goals out of nothing that won the game at Hull. We need that kind of quality on the pitch. Diouf and Walters cannot provide it. You don't drop one of your best players on the back of two poor performances. I agree with you on Ramadan, but that is two simple decisions he has got wrong. If those two were on the pitch in the second half we would have killed them off. That's not hindsight either, it was fairly obvious at the time. Perhaps there is something else going on we are unaware of but based on the facts we have this is just really strange decision-making that is costing us points.

I'd prefer MH/Bowen to have fronted-up and admitted that he was dropped because he'd been poor in the last couple of games. But instead we pander to the player with "he's tired/we've got a hectic schedule"...and they expect the fans to swallow it.

No-one has said it, so I'll say it now. It was a massive mistake not to bring him and Sohbi on after the 65-70 minutes to finish Leicester off. We missed an opportunity to get three points and improve our goal difference by 5 or 6. The kindest thing you can say about Hughes is, he lacks a killer instinct and doesn't have what it takes take us into Europe.

Squawka tweeted a stat earlier (which has now been deleted for some reason).
It said Shaqiri was 2nd in the league for most chances created without an assist.
Tadic was top.

He never says anything to the press beyond the jargon , not helped by the insipid standard of questions these days , nothing about why Bone was dropped or why he cocks up the majority of his substitutions or why he wont give young players a decent amount of time on the pitch

I keep waiting for him to get a level of consistency where he torments defenders week after week. It never happens, though.

The fact that shaqiri didn't play on Saturday was one of the big positives for me.
Rewarding him with a start after his no shows b Arsenal and Southampton would have been a tony pulis'esque "he's playing no matter how shit he is" selection.

Shaqiri has been missing since his brace against Hull. Absolute dogshit in the last 2 games. Based on his performances for the past month, he deserved to be dropped. It's not some form of punishment we're imposing on ourself, he is simply offering absolutely nothing at the moment. Doesn't help defensively and falls over on his arse every time he gets the ball & loses possession. His attitude is highly questionable, especially the way he dives every time he's muscled off the ball. I applaud the manager for dropping him. The baffling decision was why Ramadan was not playing.

Didn't he pull the ball back for Allen against WBA? And its a bit harsh that he doesn't get an assist for goal against Watford

Players should be dropped for playing badly but its still baffling why he dropped Diouf and Imbula mid-week, both had been playing well but still lost their places. Same with Ramadan, played well and got dropped. Shaq had looked good when he was given free reign of the frontline then looked awful when he got put back outwide. We mess with the team far too much.

"The kindest thing you can say..." Negative dogshit mate. That's a great word - I think I might use it. Not sure what's unstantiontionable. If I have made unsubstantionated claims, the word "hogwash" is redundant, repetitive and unnecessary. But, perhaps you can be a little more specific? When formulating your response, please note, I was there in person and I am quite willing to provide a sworn statement, if that would help. Of course two people can see the same thing and come to quite different conclusions. Otherwise, there would be no need for this board. However, I am 100% certain that Stoke were two goals up with 16 minutes of regulation time to go and failed secure a victory. Stoke made its first substitution after 83 minutes and its second substitution after 92 minutes. So those are facts, beyond dispute. The rest of my statement is my opinion, which I have not changed, namely Mark Hughes lacks the killer instinct and doesn't have what it takes to take us into Europe. I am certainly interested to know why you think I am wrong; however, the fact that you had to resort to a mild insult does suggest your argument is a bit weak (see below).

He is slightly younger than me so you are pretty safe because I will have to wait till he's dead to collect.  QED etc. I'll raise your bet by a billion million and see you merrily in Europe next year to collect. Why keep casting aspertions when we're about to take on two of the sternist challenges of the season. We won't be scared. We've seen scintilating nogger, stoicism and some sloppiness in the run up. Two difficult fixtures and then we're at the top of the slope. Looking good for the slalom down. No need for so much negativity (and double posting for emphasis). My perception is that yr a reasonable poster who unfortunately reaches unreasonable conclusions. Smile. I was there too. See the whole journey differently to you though.
