It stemmed from the fact we were completely on the back foot and under the cosh from the off. That game needed pace and quality in every position but MH went back to 'safe'. After the sending off we, of course, had the right characters on the pitch to secure a terrific point. Those first 15 minutes though... :-( Too right, the very good rear guard action to get a very good point under the circumstances and the talking point that is the red card has seen Hughes almost totally get away with timid selection that resulted in a disjointed ineffective performance with 11 men. No pace, giving the ball away, too many high balls, boring, ineffective, bench packed with old heads lacking in pace and game changing abilities.

The positives? Less interest in Arnie in the transfer window! He's been playing well most of the time

Herrera's challenge was a lot worse than Arnie's yesterday. Agreed mate but not according to officials 🤔

If Arnie was frustrated, he should have just elbowed the guy in the face... thats not even worthy of a yellow apparently.

I think it looked a lot worse than it was but these days you go in like that and you are risking a red card . He should know better really

I truly hope Arnie turns up at matches he's banned from and supports the lads, to quash the rumours of him going home over Xmas, although didn't Fuller have a similar ban and went home over the Xmas break?

When will his suspension deciced? Hughes said we won't be appealing so he's out for 3 games.

Did he bollocks do it for Christmas off. Probably was a red though now I've watched it 748 times. BUT what I think everyone wants and Hughes should be highlighting this to the FA is parity. This is the real issue here. Another thing last night. Why wasn't Bertrand booked for dissent for slamming the ball into the ground and towards an official? Ditto Ward Prowse for shooting his mouth off way before he ended up getting one in the 90th minute? How many have we had booked for it? Why didn't the linesman spot the elbow on Bruno? The very same linesman that got Arnie sent off? Decisions like the red last night can go for or against you. Sheer incompetence and borderline corruption amongst officials will continue. They need bringing to task rather than being patted on the back and awarded the next big game. Wasn't Taylor wrapped up in the recent Citeh v Chelsea brawl and missed several assaults that the FA also glossed over post match? I share all your frustrations at what is a rapidly deteriorating standard in Refereeing and in particular linesmen. However to be fair the elbow on Bruno was completely on the linesmans blind side and it would have been impossible for him to see it. It could however be a perfect example of a situation for a retrospective hearing and suspension. I won't hold my breath.

The bald-headed linesman running the Boothen end of the DPD stand was totally useless, particularly in the 1st half. He was missing Soton offsides and flagging for offside when there was none. He had an easier time in the 2nd half becasue of the infrequency of Stoke attacks. Of course he was very quick to spot the Arnie incident, but it was right in front of him.

Always wondered if suspended and injured players travel to away games. I'd assume injured players wouldnt have to travel but what about home games? Does Ireland, Affaley and Butland turn up and do the sponsor rounds?

Arnie is one of my favourite players and I'm as disappointed as he will be. Then again, I can't wait to see more of Sobhi too, so every cloud has a silver lining.

Refereeing can be too human to equate it to other games and incidents.
You leave yourself open to the referees interpretation by attempting it in the first place.
Spur of the moment bad challenge leads to a red. Nothing you can do move on.
As for engineering it to get Christmas off. What a load of bollocks

I think it was a red card but the idea of not paying him for a month is stupid. It was a mistake, if were to start deducting pay from people for mistakes then no one would want to play for us anymore

The one positive is it takes a player missing games for others to get their chance. Hopefully will force Hughes to play sobhi instead of just rearranging the usual suspects.
The irony is that sobhi may be brilliant then have to fuck off to ACON

I'm in the same camp as others have mentioned above. It isn't the red card that I have an issue with, it is the fact that similar (and even worse) tackles haven't had the same punishment.
Just re-watched the Herrera one, absolutely horrific.

The rest will hopefully do him good.
He's been poor for a good 4-5 games now, perhaps it's got to do with all the internationals he's played.

Quite clearly a red card. No point in appealing just add stupidity to the list of Arnautovic cons.

The shit fans give Arnie baffles me. He's pretty much our only threat and in the last few games has setup some absolute sitters that we have either scored or cocked up completely.
People saying he doesn't influence the game, it's not always that easy when you have a left back who is probably the worst passer of the ball ive seen in the top flight, to a point it's embarrassing. On top of that you have Whelan who takes 20 minutes to control it and decide what do and Charlie "blind pass" Adam along side of you. He must look around sometimes and think what the fuck.

Its called an agenda and too many on here set their stall out where Arnie is concerned a long time ago and have to justify their stance at every (thankfully fleeting) opportunity. Its very sad. As you say, with the exception of Joe Allen he is pretty much our only threat and is involved in all our positive attacking play, but hey, he's been shit apparently...

Out until the 3rd of Jan. Christmas and New Year off. Coincidence? IMO he needs a month unpaid We're talking about Arnie - a player many have accused of being a "big game" player - he loves to play against the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, so he'll be as frustrated as anyone to be missing those. Maybe lay off the fava beans and Chianti eh, Hannibal?

(ACN is on Jan 14 - Feb 5) I like the look of Ramadan too but it can't be taken for granted that he will be the replacement. He's a young kid who still hasn't played 90 minutes for us. I wouldn't be surprised if Walters was used on the left wing and either Bony or Crouch restored to the front or Bojan in a free role. I'm not saying that Walters on the left wing would be a good solution, but it's the kind of choice Hughes frequently uses.
