I think negotiations with the new guy will begin before he is fired, which will cause a delay. However, he would be gone before we play another game. For all we know, the club might already be making tentative enquiries. Hughes is under an unenviable amount of pressure. On Monday, I was kind of thinking he'd be out if we lost against West Brom. But Coatesy's total contempt "it's absolutely ridiculous that the question is even being asked after 5 games" and forensic breakdown of those 5 games to back his man has made me think he could well survive even that. "Well, it was stupid after 5 games but perfectly fine after 6" doesn't really work as an explanation does it when you've gone public like that? We're all guessing though.
Yeah I said to my mate at lunch time, that after listening to Coates on Talksport this morning, I could see Hughes not getting the shove, even if we conceded 10 over the next two games without any reply.
Coates seemed completely focussed on the last five games, almost as if the last five months (of football) didn't even exist, he was so emphatic in his support, that ultimately he was putting himself in a position, where no matter what happens (however bad) in the next few games, he'll ultimately have to stick by his manager.
Hopefully it won't come to it but if it did, it will be interesting to see if he actually does.

At first I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Then I realized Coates has to show support for Hughes in public otherwise the players will wonder why the hell he's still there. Coates is a very successful business man in an industry with relatively small margins between success and failure. I am sure he has set Hughes very specific goals. They will both know exactly when he needs to pull the trigger before we reach the point of no return. We need 20 points by mid-season to be on the right track to achieve 40 points by the end of the season. That translates to 19 points over the next 14 games, which is quite achievable given the teams we are playing. However, Hughes's situation becomes more and more untenable as we approach the point at which we have to earn more than 2 points a game to survive, because that rate requires us to play at Champions Laegue standard for the rest of the season. Another way of looking at this - he can't afford to lose more than 4 games between now and Christmas if he wants to keep his job.

Yeah - having said what he's said it's hard to see him getting chopped even if the next 2 games go spectacularly wrong. Mind you, we seem to have reached that point tha you only recognise when you reach it where defeats now could really shift the sands in huge ways. Tonight's a strange one as even an emphatic win won't get him much credit, but a defeat will hurt him badly - and I really don't want to imagine what the aftermath of a defeat to Pulis would look like. Suffice to say, it wouldn't be pretty.
