If he was still struggling to overcome his back problems there is no way he would have been playing tonight.
The simple facts are that he's been out of form alongside so many others. Its only a matter of time until he's back to his best.

His back had strapping on under his shirt, it's definitely not completely behind him. He was also beyond poor against City.
That's all very negative but it's my honest opinion, I love the bloke and he is mister Stoke City to me but it's far too early to be parking that myth.

He may not be suffering with any pain at the minute but he's playing like a man that knows his back could go again at any given time.

Why risk him tonight then?
He's fit. If he wasn't he wouldn't have been involved tonight. He's simply out of form.

I think its a two-fold exercise for Hughes regarding playing Ryan tonight: 1. Check out if his understanding with another partner is better, the same or worse than Wolly 2. Try to get his mojo back by playing against, with respect, poorer opposition - yes this is a form issue mainly. He obviously is fit enough physically to play but, as its been said before, it may the case Ryan needs to shake out the worry of his back failing again. Playing consistently in a winning team is the best medicine for him

He missed the majority of last season because of an awful injury. Give the man some time as he has given us, remember he could've left us a few seasons ago when he was arguably one of the best English centre backs.

If his back's fucked they wouldn't have played him. If his head's fucked the only way to get over it is to play through the psychological barrier, which he's doing. If he's just lost form, well, form is temporary and class is permanent and he'll be back to his best before too long.
A good news night all round I'd say.

More to our gain.

I haven't seen too much drama, people have been (rightly imo) worried but I haven't seen anyone say anything dramatic like he wants fucking off.

I've seen people saying after the Man City game that his time is done and we need to look for replacements. To me that's not a fair way to treat our captain who gave us the time, we owe it him back.

It will always come BACK. Because of his difficult come BACK from surgery. But soon he'll be back to his best and we'll win the fa cup this season then life will be nearly completed

If his back's not completely behind him he's fcuked. I mean, if his back is even partly in front of him that's very, very bad. And weird.

Give the man some time as he has given us, remember he could've left us a few seasons ago when he was arguably one of the best English centre backs. Stoke don't have the time to find out if a player can rediscover his form. We would end up in a relegation battle if we persisted with that mentality. So you think we should ship Ryan out now because if we persevere with him and he doesn't regain his form we will be in a relegation battle? Don't you remember last season when we were miles away from relegation WITHOUT Ryan? Of course if players lost form you would look at dropping them or replacing them, but this is a player who has been with us a long time and is just getting back into a new season after being out for a long time. He's only played 2 games... I don't want us to constantly change around the formation and players like last season. Leicester kept almost the same players from start till finish.

Pretty much any team would give their best defender/most influential player time to find his form again after a long lay-off. Why are we any different?

Interestingly, Sky mentioned him as a potential candidate for England yesterday. I can't see it, but I suppose he has a chance now that there's a proper manager at the helm.

The radio commentators last night discussed how he was playing and inferred he was "managing" his back. The "expert" (Chris Kamara I think?) said most players have to "manage" some part of their bodies like Knees, ankle, back, etc. to get through a game/season. As for playing for England, I think the chance has passed. Ryan had his chance, he now carries too much baggage from bad publicity from past "events" and there are too many younger candidates to consider. At least he played for England unlike Jimmy Greenhoff.

Saying that I would wear knee braces too but that's because I am getting too old to play sport now. He may well use the tape, even for mental reasons, until he retires. I still tape my wrists after breaking them the best part of 20 years ago.

I was surprised he started. If his back is a major threat to him playing regularly then you really would have expected him to sit this one out, it would have been the obvious call from the medics
