Do you not believe that his lack of form could be down to playing well within himself due to fear of breaking down again at anytime? That's definitely how it looks to me. No. I don't believe that for one minute. Given that he played last night, he's obviously fit to play and medically free of the back problem that kept him out last season. We wouldn't have risked him otherwise. I think what we have witnessed is a player recovering from back surgery and finding his feet again, a player who hasn't been at his best, a player who is perhaps focusing more on the games of his struggling team mates rather than his own game and we've probably been watching a player who isn't wholly happy with his current central defensive partner. Players lose form. Even the best of them. Ryan is one of the best centre halves in the league. He hasn't been playing well by his own exceptionally high standards. His back injury doesn't spell the end for him. His current form isn't that of a player who will never return to former glories. He's out of form. He'll be back to his imperious best soon. Of that I have no doubt. I will boldly predict now that Ryan will have his best game of the season when he comes face to face with Zlatan again. He's simply that type of character. That will be the contest he will be looking forward to more than any other. 1000% agree Dave

If he was still struggling to overcome his back problems there is no way he would have been playing tonight. The simple facts are that he's been out of form alongside so many others. Its only a matter of time until he's back to his best. When i keep getting my fitness back, i wish my back would stop giving me problems and setting me back months. A constant issue which won't go away and is far from a myth, if you suffer with back problems then you would understand more. He has a weakness there and it won't go away, it is just a case of weather he can manage it. He may not even ever reach full fitness again depending how severe it is, after all his training will be a lot more intense than my hour or two a few times a week.

He may not even ever reach full fitness again depending how severe it is, after all his training will be a lot more intense than my hour or two a few times a week. You are a mere mortal, as am I. You are not a super fit athlete, probably never have been and are unlikely ever to be one. You are also highly unlikely to have access to the very best medical treatment and sports science facilities. You are also unlikely, I suspect, to have people watching your every move and analysing what needs to be done to get you back to 100% fitness. It is totally different. If Ryan was playing through the pain barrier and medically, wasn't 100% fit to play, there is no way on gods green earth that he would have played last night. He may break down again, he may get back trouble in the future but right now, he's fit to play. He hasn't been playing well and it has little to do with injury. He isn't finished. He isn't a cripple. He's fit to play and he will soon be playing well again. Ryan missed a few days of pre-season, travelled to America with the team, played in all bar our first pre-season friendly and has started every competitive fixture we've played this season to date. He's fit to play. People need to a) stop making excuses for him and b) writing him off on the back of two less than impressive showings and just accept that even the best players have off days or lose form temporarily. Ryan will be back to his best in no time. The hyperbole and histrionics surrounding what is essentially a dip in form is ridiculous. EDIT - I have back, hip and pelvis problems so know only too well how debilitating they can be!

Which all leaves what I said as valid, given that he is out of form and that Wolly isn't helping matters we need another quality central defender as backup. Or better still to move Wolly to backup.
To go into a season without any backup would in my opinion be negligent. Need I remind you of our end of season form where injuries ravaged our side leaving us to ponder what might have been. Already we played Man City without 3 key players injured and the season has only just started.
We need players fighting for positions at every spot not under pressure to return from injury as we have no one else capable.
I think a Stoke City side fully fit can compete with ANYONE in this league or any other we have the video evidence of that from last season to back that up, however I am concerned that we fail to put right the shortages in the squad that cost us so dear. It's not ba case of a BIGGER squad it's a better squad we need Mark Wilson leaving gives us an opportunity to make a step in that direction. We must take it.

Back problems are a nightmare. I got a hernia in my spine a year ago and although I was told it would heal I still get pain there regularly and the feeling that it's going to go at any minute again.
Its a shame for Ryan but if he isn't playing at 100% by January then the club should really be looking at getting someone else in. First and foremost is the club more than any player.
