The main differences between officials today and those of many years ago is in three key areas, at least in my opinion. 1. Players cheating as become more subtle, such as diving and shirt pulling. 2. Their mistakes are shown over and over again on television and the Internet. 3. The rules have become more complicated, one example of this is the offside rule. My own view is that in general the performance of the officials is pretty good and considering they have only seconds to make a decision it's fairly remarkable they make so few mistakes. Yet out of 3 major decisions yesterday he didn't get the most obvious one....major decisions in games aren't that common but to get all 3 debateably wrong isn't great.

He certainly got one wrong Robin. On the two penalties by the strict letter of the law he probably gets it right, as others have said we will have to wait and see if their is a sudden increase in such decisions.

Geoff where've you been? Dean is a preening, self important clown. The penalty he gave us was the softest you'll ever see with the second softest being the one he gave them. He missed the most blatant one on Allen. My suspicion is he realised at halftime he'd given a very soft penalty to them and missed a blatant penalty for us and took the first opportunity to level it up. I could never prove it but I've played and watched the game long enough to know it's a strong liklihood. I also think the pushes on Arnie and Walters straight after one another in the second half were stronger penalty claims than the ones he gave but I've not seen them back to confirm this.

I think it's true LG that some officials have a body language problem and Dean is probably one of them. One of the most important things you say though is in your last sentence i.e. " but I've not seen them back to confirm this." The referee does not have the luxury of being able to see the incident played back before he makes his decision, so in general I think they do a good job. It's also pretty clear that dedicated fans of any club are the least able to judge a referee in an unbiased way.

I would have had a bet on Ryan being the first "victim" of this new law but the odds were not good. Were there any other referees following this new law over the weekend? Huth and Koscielny were having ding dongs in their respective boxes and one West Ham defender threw a Bournemouth attacker to the ground but -- no penalties and no bookings. So Mike Dean is the only clued up ref in the league??

It's hard not to feel persecuted when the only time it's happened is on Shawcross...the sterling one was a desperate attempt of the ref to even things out...just this weekend there could have been 20 penalties...guess who got penalised?

I agree that it is hardly surprising that Ryan was the first to get penalized, he is a marked man and he made the ref's decision easy.
But the ref erred when he missed Allen being floored, I guess he knew it but was not brave enough to call it, but he "balanced" things up at the first opportunity by penalizing Sterling for a pretty innocuous challenge.

Maybe he will play better now he's got time to think about defending rather than wrestling. "Victim" is hardly a word I would associate with Ryan.
What we need is performances like the one against Costa last season, he has shown us he can do it and with a chance to redeem himself against Ibrahimovic this season he needs to step up to the plate.
Captains lead by example he should be the one enforcing the changes in training and reminding players of new rules , not putting his head in a media induced noose like he did.

It was a fucking stupid challenge - easiest decision of the weekend to penalise a pantomime villain playing against a big club.
Happy with the rule - it's got beyond ridiculous - but consistency is required. If the referees won't do it then Match of the Day need to highlight all the incidents and shame the useless bastards into enforcing the law.

In most games when a corner is taken there is huge conjestion in the penalty area with often 5/6 players in a small circle grappling with each other. The referee has to decide in a split second who is holding/shirt pulling/obstructing and in many cases attackers and defenders are holding each other. Rather than television showing us hours after the game what the ref did wrong in these situations why not let the officials call on video evidence during the game as happens in most other sports?

All this will be forgotten by November and it will be back to the usual, never stays consistent! Prolly see a lot of disallowed goals as well I would imagine until its back to the usual

I certainly agree that there has to be some level of persecution, when two or three seasons in a row, you're the only team getting penalized for holding in the box. I truly believe that our penalty was merely a token gesture because he royally fucked up on the Allen one.

Of course it wasn't, Richard. Only Stoke do it.
I imagine that Manchester City have made their displeasure known to the authorities that they should have to face the same rules as Stoke City.

If the 2nd pen is the standard too then Diouf will be the next one to give away a penalty. Every corner he came back for he spends looking directly at and pushing his man, never looks at the ball simply there to block or push.

How many more pennos given for this offence over the weekend? Thats right..None. So in every other game there wasn't any grappling in the box at all......yeah right.

Results not going to change now but if Dean gets fucked over that will at least be some consolation. For their pen, our pen or the missed pen I don't care.

It's interesting that on goals on Sunday Kit Symons and Dean Saunders thought that the pen we got was more justified than the one man City got.
They both insisted that Ryans challenge was not a pen

There are some pundits who think they were penalties and some who think they weren't. There are some Stoke fans who think they were penalties and some who think they weren't. There is a former referee who thinks they were both penalties.
What do all these people have in common? They have all been able to see the incidents played back, in some cases probably many times. Mike Dean sees the incidents once and has to decide on the spot, it is impossible to get all decisions correct or to satisfy all the interested parties because decisions are often subjective. If we want more accuracy then we need to turn to video technology, although even that wouldn't be foolproof.

The 2 times Shawcross has been penalised for this in a decade (which makes him a serial offender in some of our more critical fans eyes) he has actually had the forward grabbing hold of him or pushing him as well.
So what happens now? Do defenders have to dive and hope the referee gives something, or just accept the forward can man handle them and there's nothing you can do to stop it. Or does this only apply in games involving us or Mike Dean?
It has always been a farce that diving is hardly ever penalised so forwards might as well dive as the few penalties it brings are more than enough reward for the very rare yellow card dished out. Now they can add pushing and pulling the defender around without the defender being able to do anything about it. Unless of course this is something that only happens in our games like last time, and the rule isn't conveniently forgotten when the so called big team's are doing it as we saw last time.

Halsey mentions that Dean 'wasn't pro-active' in telling Shawcross and Otomendi to stop the argy-bargy, (pun intended)! I.e. Dean should have blown his whistle to stop the corner being taken and had a quiet word. The fact that he didn't and Ryan was penalized says an awful lot about the decision and Dean.
