From James Whittaker on twitter "Sounds like we're carrying a few knocks, Johnson out, Arnie gone for a scan on a thigh complaint and Shaqiri not finishing training" What the hell do we do in training. At this rate it'll be ....................Jack................. Bardsley......Ryan.........Wolli.....Eric ........Allen.......Imbula....Glen....... ............Bojan...........Sobhi........ .....................Diouf............... If these intrinsic soft tissue injuries are going to persist, we need a new medical team. Unacceptable, injury prevention is paramount with the job. It does seem ridiculous it's completely hindering us. We need continuity.

Is it these 'fake' grass pitches we're playing on?

Do we not fancy Charlie scoring 3 from the half way line on Saturday? If Man City are going to deploy Caballero miles out of his box then Charlie has to play.

Thinking about the Man City game and last years game and how City almost put 7 past Bucharest last night...
Shaq seems so dangerous in the middle. Maybe it's time to rotate him and Bojan in that role and free up the right wing for a more natural winger?
Give them 45 minutes each to keep them fresh?
I.e. Any two of Arnie/Sobhi/Walters/Imbula
With Allen and Whelan behind...
Or is that heresy to suggest we'd be better balanced that way?
(And Diouf might actually get some service)...

I'd much rather have Shaq in the middle. I said this last season. He looks like the same player from Bayern Munich when he's there.

That's what I have been saying for a while. The only question then is who goes on the right wing? Diouf or Walters, which is less than ideal because neither or true wingers (but then neither is Shaq). Diouf defends better than Walters so that's what I'd go with, especially with Bardsley or Johnson behind him. Maybe the best option there is Cameron!

Shaqiri can clearly whip a ball in, looks great when he takes on his man, goes outside him and whips a ball in with his right. Far too often however he looks to cut inside, sees it's not an option and relents to passing sideways or backwards instead, with a fullback like Johnson bombing forward so much more space is created, just watch the highlights from last year and you'll see how influential Glen was.

The latest sentence hits the nail on the head. Defenders know he'll cut inside 9 times out of 10 so they shade him that way and cut him off. Very predictable and easy to defend.

Could we see the return of the 352 if Shaq and Arnie are out?
Gulp!

Butland Cameron (or Johnson) Wollscheidt Shawcross Muniesa Allen Imbula Diouf Shaqiri Arnie Walters (or Joselu or Bojan)
I was originally arguing against chopping and changing, but they have to try Shaqiri in the middle because he's wasted out wide.

Against a back 2 of Stones and Kolarov you have to play one of Jon or Crouch to get stuck in surely. Diouf on the wing is a must to exploit their silly (very clever, actually) full back positions; Allen to track Silva (what a comfortable debut for the lad); Whelan has to sit literally on our centre halves toes, if he doesn't, then get Adam on for a hat-trick. I'd like Shaqiri to play number 10, but not to start with in this game. Diouf has more pace, Walters will get into Stones, and Arnie is Arnie. All three offer more defensive cover too. To be honest, I'd drop Ryan for Muniesa seeing as even a fully fit centre half can get ripped to shreds by Aguero, but his leadership is obviously key too, so I'm not entirely fussed. Cameron for Bards (more mobility/speed).
Anyone but Haugaard. Cameron - Ryan - Wollscheid - Eric Allen - Whelan - Imbula Diouf - Walters - Arnautovic

It will be false nine on Saturday. Cameron over bardsley for me --------given-------- Cameron---Ryan--wooly---Erik --------imbula---Whelan---allen----- ------------shaq-----Arnie---------- ---------------bojan---------------- I see my boy has hijacked my username again. I'm going to set him up his own. He's only 8 but he makes more sense than many on here! I too think the front 3, injury permitting, will be Shaq, Bojan and Arnie in a false 9 set up. My midfield 3 would be Charlie, Allen and Imbula and I'd keep Bardsley in at right back. Goal threat, steel and creativity in that midfield 3 to make up for the lack of an out and out centre forward.

perfect game for Ryan to rediscover his scoring head again

I remember this fixture was Pellegrini one of the first away games or the first and they struggled didn't play well we should of won atleast by 2 goals. Obviously they have a much better team now but this is what could happen on Saturday who knows. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/23999231

Given Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters Whelan Imbula Allen Shaq Bojan Arnautovic Come on Sparky, give us a reprise of the false-9 bollocks. Would be glorious to style all over Pep's journeymen. This for me as well. Diouf would get so few chances if he was playing alone up top in this fixture that we aren't really losing much by leaving him out. We'll get a much bigger boost from pushing Bojan forward and bringing in another midfield. Allen and Whelan in the more defensive roles with Imbula ahead won't be easy to dominate, even for Man City. It's worked before against them, and that was without Allen and Imbula.

Obviously a really tough game and we must be huge underdogs.
Very difficult team selection and no right answer. The arguments for Charlie to start are good. Pep loves this "sweeper-keeper" thing, and surely MH and Co will be aware of it. Get your head up Charlie and don't be afraid to have a go? Is he mobile enough to cope with Manchester City's midfield though? Probably not.
Pep also wants to encourage Stones to come out with the ball, so does Diouf or Walters play up top to get in his face and force an error? Similarly, if their fullbacks push right out of their traditional positions, surely we can create space out wide? Same as last year - out to Shaq on the right to play in Arnie coming steaming across the box from the left. Absolutely beautiful.
I'm glad I don't have to set up the team and organise the system and tactics. Very hard for this one. I'm not sure what he'll do "to be perfectly honest".
I've defended the squad and the club on here over the last day or so, and it shows just how far we've come that it would not be a massive surprise if we get something out of this game against a team that could easily reach the last 4 of the Champions League again.
On the other hand, we could take a pasting from this lot.
Good luck lads and have a go. This is a real test.

Joking aside though, you're right of course, and that is a measure of how good we are. I go into every game now, home or away, thinking, we've got a chance today...
Edit - nice Billy Glassback pic by the way.

Bowen was on Radio this morning saying we have everyone available, good news if true that means Butland and Johnson are good to go. Don't know when that was recorded though.
