If Pieters is going to carry on at the start of this season like he finished last season then I'd be looking to give Taylor a go. He used to play as a winger in the academy so obviously he won't have a nose bleed once he gets beyond the half way. I would say his delivery will be better than Pieters but then I think mine is. We know Eric is a good player but some reason he seems to be struggling for a bit of form. As for right back a fit Glenn Johnson is great but again if he cant be relied on then I vote for Trippier if he's available. I've read that Trippier is available for £5M if so I'd say its a no brainer.

Pieters is OK but needs competition. We know that Johnson will miss 75% of this season, as he does every season, so we need a new right back, too. Plus we currently have one centre back worth bothering with and his back is liable to explode at any minute, so we need two top quality centre backs, instead of the makeshift 'do a job' options we've had for the last few years.
When all of that is done, then we can arse about spending tens of millions on a striker.

Johnson allows us to keep possession well down that right hand side and understands the wing back role. I'm starting to be convinced that we won't be able to play how Hughes wants without getting a similar player to replace Eric, and a pacey centre halve who can cover a lot more ground (and who reads the game better than G-cam). Basically, we're looking for a world class centre halve. 😑

I have long held the view that we need to new fullbacks. I like Pieters but the lack of competition has seen a lot of poor performances recently. Johnson is great but sadly will miss as many games a he will play
For me the centre halves are not the issue (gulp) as they are covering/worrying about our left flank and right flank
Bards is good for one or two game but overall looking past it

Pieters has been inconsistent for a while. On the plus side i thought Wolfsheid was outstanding today, whilst i thought Shawcross was quite poor.

Wolly is not as bad as he's painted by some on here but I do think he's a tad mentally unstable, his capacity to lose the plot worries me more than his lack of pace.

Bardsley is usually solid, but he got done a few times in the first half yesterday. Same for Pieters, his passing was terrible.
I think we can put a part of it down to lacking match sharpness etc, everyone in red and white was the same yesterday. We seemed to be caught of guard with the fact they came straight out the blocks. How on earth I don't know. A newly promoted team, sell out their ground and we're caught of guard when their players are up for it right from the KO.

Lack of preparation again same every season, slow out of the blocks why does this keep happening under Hughes.

Butland the stand out name there I believe was signed by Pulis and his team, Arnie , Bojan good player, the others well time will tell all signed for big money all midfielders. I believe common consensus from within the club was that Pulis was livid with the Butland signing as he wanted to waste the money elsewhere. So he was signed whilst Pulis was in charge then and quite a while before Hughes was taken on.

In my view, all our full backs are has beens. Sorry if this upsets anyone, but I sincerely believe this statement. We need younger, quicker lads if we are to compete with the big boys. It will be harder than ever this season! My dream of an F.A. Cup trophy won't happen unless we get shot of some of the dross, and bring better in. A striker is also a must, as I have been saying for years!

Personally I would have gone for Big Sam but that boat has sailed now, we need someone sort of a mixture between flair and defence instead of all one or all another, who is available out there now with those attributes I really do not know, whoever needs to address the obvious flaws we have in defence and attack if we are to become a more balanced and consistent team.

Fair enough if that's your opinion. There's a lot we can improve on,no argument there but for the time being ill take top ten finishes and trying to win games.

We need younger competition for the full back slots. Spurs have Trippier and Yedlin behind Walker so surely one is available. On the left I would hope our under-21 player of the year could challenge Pieters. As a converted winger he may be more capable of overlapping to give us some width and crossing.

Supposedly Sunderland are still trying to get Yedlin back from Tottenham. If so, I'd imagine Spurs would want to keep Trippier. However, neither were in the squad for their match against Everton. I'd take either.
