Pieters is trying to get a season's worth of errors out of his system before the season actually starts.

We have been piss-poor since Shaq went off. Whelan & Cameron have been absolutely useless. Bojan & Charlie have looked decent. Joe Allen is playing confidently He MUST play together with Imbula in the central midfield next week - no Whelan please!

We had a poor pre-season last year and it carried on into the first six games of the season. We look to be doing the same again. We also had a poor second half of last season and while we have enough good players to avoid the drop, a few injuries to key people and we could easily have a bit of a wobble. There is a need to freshen the first X1. We need more energy in at least one of the full back positions, a centre back, a quicker wide man and a centre forward.

Joselu has been anonymous. Glen Johnson is a really huge player for us. Without him Shaq is too isolated to have an impact on the game. Our lineup for the first game should be - Butland Glen, Shaw, Wolly, Pieters Allen, Imbula Shaq, Bojan, Arnie Diouf.
Btw everyone on here slaughtering Diouf need to understand that he is absolutely useless when he's on the wing but with both Arnie & Shaq out, we have no other wingers which is why Hughes is forced to play him there. A new centre back would be nice.

Reckon it'll be more to do with getting Whelan as many minutes on the field as poss Any specific reason why Glenn would need more minutes than Joe? No idea, but from watching them both today he def does!

Encouraged by that covering run Muniesa made. Can't remember him doing that too many times without being out injured for weeks after. G'RN Muni.

We were in desperate need of pace , power , a new defender and a forward last year , considering we just added Joe Allen in terms of first team starters nothing much will have changed , great that Arnie has stayed but a fair bit more is needed.
Biggest worry from reading this is that the style seems the same lots of passes when one will do and slow build up play , can't see that working well at home
We will see how they do next week

Agree that was a bad miss again but if you KEEP playing a striker in different positions during 90mins Striker, winger , left back as Hughes has always seemed to do you will NEVER get the best out of him! How many more excuses are people going to make for Diouf?. He is fuckin' toss. If he is our best striking option for the season then we have big problems. The way the defence shapes up we will need to score at least two per game to get a point!. I'm not making excuses for him. BUT he's had ONE chance all game and has spent 40 mins of the second half on the wing. He's a striker ffs and should play as a striker. Anyway anybody can see that Hughes clearly doesn't fancy any of our current strikers. The problem is you can't just get rid of them all and start again just like that. That's our forward problem as I see it. None of them are good enough really.

Any specific reason why Glenn would need more minutes than Joe? No idea, but from watching them both today he def does! I just find it a bit strange that if Joe has been brought in to replace Glenn (as many people have suggested) that Hughes wouldn't then want to give him at least some game time playing in that role before the season started. Today he's played exactly where he played for Liverpool and Swansea.

Wasn't that bad, as we didn't get thrashed, but you can see we won't score many goals this season, and it's not just the forwards , there is no desire to get past your man and onto the box, just pussyfooting about, like last season.

I'm glad that I started watching Stoke in a long ago era when friendlies, pre-season and thereafter, were games nobody was really interested in. When the season got underway, I watched games, home and away, enjoyed many. disappointed many times, always came back for the next one.
Games and players were discussed by fans but with no social media/internet (only letters to the Sentinel!), it was a pretty basic discussion. Currently, with all the media available, every action/inaction by players is dissected, every piece of minutiae picked over like a corpse, tactics approved or not by all the FM devotees.
Do modern day fans actually ENJOY games or is it only when the team are winning - at other times, I am surprised (and dismayed) by the vehemence and anger of opinions - it's still just a bloody GAME isn't it?

Watched second half - a bit frustrating really
yes we are away at a decent Bundesliga team but we rarely threatened - got the ball picked off us far too easily
(Eric Pieters having a 'mare' in that respect) conceded a goal - our own post hit and another disallowed
We just seemed a bit too casual at times with our passing - either passing to someone already marked or, giving it away far too easily
-too easy to make chances against us from our own mistakes and, all too willing to concede from 'second balls'
Our own set pieces offered us absolutely no goal threat either
e.g we won a corner and our own crowd in the corner, half of whom weren't even watching - knowing full well - it would be cleared
mind you Arnie was not playing - so definitely, not our starting eleven
Egyptian lad looks promising but a bit raw and naiive - Joe Allen is a fiesty little bugger
(Stokies are gonna love him)
and Ryan Played full match - seemingly no problems
