An astonishing football player.
I met him rather briefly in Barcelona about 20 years ago and had the honour of shaking his hand and saying hello.
RIP Johan

Won absolutely everything at club level there is to win.
Also laid down the blue print and was the architect of Barcelonas 'total footbal' philosophy, which carries on today.
RIP to an all time great
A sad sad day

in a time when the word "Legend" is massively over used, this was a man who earned that title in everything he did on a football pitch. one of my biggest footballing regrets was that i was only just too young to see anything other than replays of his greatness.
RIP

An astonishing football player. I met him rather briefly in Barcelona about 20 years ago and had the honour of shaking his hand and saying hello. RIP Johan The fact that you considered just shaking his hand and saying hello as an honour goes to show how widely revered he was as a footballer and a person, and how his influence on football changed it forever. RIP.

Expect a Wembley tribute next Tuesday night Paris and Cruyff Wembley always seems the next game after a tragedy And so there should be mate. The 1974 World Cup in West Germany is just about my first footballing memory and Johan Cruyff illuminated that tournament. I remember his run into the German box to win that penalty in the opening minute of the final vividly. He should have lifted the trophy that year.

Wonderful player, a little before my time, but HUGE influence wherever he went. Decent manager too. Always admired his ideals on how the game should be played. Up there with Puskas, Matthews and Best as the greatest ever European players.

Amazing player and horrible news at that age.
Already heard someone use the "Cruyff turning in his grave" - something about the English immediately turning to comedy after tragedy.

A true footballing legend, can honestly say I feel privileged to have been part of a standing ovation given to him at Villa Park after he'd given a masterclass to us all including a goal
Gone but will never be forgotten

Lung cancer
He used to openly admit to being a virtual chain smoker even when he played at his peak and I can still see him smoking on the touchline as Barcelona manager
So sad
