Absolutely gutted. Saw him play a couple of times. That Dutch side of '74 was as near to total football you could get. RIP

i've just been watching the clips on various news outlets, and it's stunning to see the heavy challenges (some waist height!) flying in towards him, and he keeps his balance and glides onwards. absolutely riveting to watch. i could go on a rant to belittle the modern day footballer's attitude to fouls in the box, but i don't think it's the time or place Attachment Deleted

Sad news just announced that this football legend has passed away at the young age of 68. Hopefully a few Oatcakers will post some videos. There u go Ray,, Only a short clip, but his most famous move... When we first saw that it was simply amazing! How many tried it and fell over? OK just me! Was totally gutted when they didn't win the World Cup in '74! Maestro!

Lung cancer He used to openly admit to being a virtual chain smoker even when he played at his peak and I can still see him smoking on the touchline as Barcelona manager So sad A message there mate. RIP

Never saw him play.
For those that did, how good was he and what modern player closely resembles him, if any?
Cheers.

Never saw him play. For those that did, how good was he and what modern player closely resembles him, if any? Cheers. He was brilliant in every way, it's hard to compare him with anyone else as apart from his smoking he did none of the assorted modes of dickhead behavior modern day footballers DNA seems to contain. He had great skill, great vision coupled with a coolness under pressure, he was always willing to try tricks and 'do the unorthodox', he really was a player who would MAKE you want to get off your sofa and go watch him, he really was that good on a par with Pele,Best and Beckenbaur for box office effect

The conductor of the orchestra. Everything in that 1974 team went through him. Dank haired and enigmatic.
The Bowie of football.

Very, very sad news. An incredible player and an icon for the famous 'Total Football' philosophy. Few individuals have had such an impact on football as Cruyff.
Rest in peace, Johan.

A sad indictment that the sentencing of Adam Johnson has taken the main headline on most sports pages, and the death of Cruyff is a few stories down. They shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath, and I apologise for doing so here.
A magic player. His death should be mourned by football in the same way the passing of Mozart, Elvis, and Lennon was in music. A pioneer, way ahead of the game.
I remember learning the Cruyff turn in a football training club when I was a kid. Once mastered, it was in your locker, and when it worked in a real game, there was no better feeling.
RIP

Great player, but always came over as an arrogant twat. Twat?. Jesus wept. Every great player has a certain amount of arrogance in them. It's what makes them a cut above.

RIP, a true footballing genius, he was a joy to watch, being football mad teenagers when he was in his prime he did moves we all tried to copy, a shame he'd left Ajax before Stoke played them, his record of 48 caps and 33 goals isn't a bad record.

First saw him on a TV screen in our London honeymoon hotel back in 1966! Ajax drew 2-2 at Anfield. Great footballer, played a huge part in the introduction of "total football" and an undoubted legend in the game. RIP Johann

Great player, but always came over as an arrogant twat. Let's just say good players win you games and great ones win you games and make it look easy. On that basis he was a great player :-)

Johan created a piece of "Football History" if my memory is correct.
In Munich 74, the World Cup final v W Germany from the KO he weaved his magic and was bought down in the penalty area and won a penalty within the first minute.
The Referee , our own Jack Taylor. The Wolverhampton Butcher. An incredibly brave decision. The first minute of a WORLD CUP FINAL in front of a HOME CROWD.
W Germany had not touched the ball !
RIP Johan

Rather than a minutes silence this weekend, there should be a minute of Cruyff turns by those on football pitches around the world to the applause of those watching. Cruyff was amazing. He really was the master of 'Total Football'.
