Going forward with Ryans injury I have started to fear for the long term standing of our first choice Centre half and our club captain, he is without doubt one of the greatest talents at the club and makes who ever partners him at the back look like the next Gerard Pique but this back injury is starting to get a little worrying, unfortunately unlike a muscle or bone injury a back injury will tend to be down to nerve damage and this will be a lot harder to fix than the usual athletes lay off, I am no medical expert and I know next to fuck all about Ryans condition but I have/am suffered with a similar injury that was reported to be what Ryan is suffering from, I have had this on and off over the last couple of years and I was told that there is no real treatment to fix it but we could try things to manage it better such as pain killers and Physio, I asked a doctor recently that told me this why is it fixable for a Pro footballer like RS but on the NHS it is incurable, his answer was "where did you hear that Shawcross back will be any more fixable than your condition because I have not seen that report as yet, unfortunately he will only be receiving the same treatment as you but his status as a Pro footballer will give him access to around the clock care that may get results quicker than yours".
So.......
If Ryans back is 100% fixable that will be fantastic news and we are saved defensively as we progress forward knowing that we have him back to his best and who ever in the team that partners him will be guided by his talent
But if the scenario differs
Do we start a search for a more reliable CH to accompany our current selection so as to match Ryan's importance to our team to give possible continued short term absence or even longer term absence and if so when is the decision to be made or .....
are we satisfied on a long term basis with the clubs current investment in other areas of the pitch matched with the clubs long term goals, that 2 from Tex, Cameron, Muniesa, Wilson and Wollscheid are good enough to give us stability at the back for Ryans possible injury lay offs be it short term or long term, would you be confident going in to next season knowing that Ryan may be out for most of the season again and the current crop of CH will carry us through.

I think we need to sign 2 centre backs irrespective this summer. We miss him massively and we need to shorten the gap in performance when he's missing. That can only be done in the transfer market.

I said in the pre season we needed another experienced centre half. The younger ones we have now are not there yet as leaders. I'd be happy with an older player with years of good grounding behind him who commands real respect and doesn't mind playing as and when. Not sure who though. Also perhaps a top young talent for a bit more competition.

I thought Cameron did really well yesterday but he's getting on a bit. Wolly too had a good game (bar a couple of wank clearances) but always has me on tenterhooks because I think he's got a ballsup in him. Wilson injury and gaffe prone. Muniesa injury prone. Texiera ? Clearly Mark Hughes feels the same way. And there doesn't seem to be anyone in the u 21's anywhere near first team standard. So you are right Bayern a minimum of two first team regular centre halves required in the summer regardless of Ryan's long term condition.

Cameron did so well yesterday but like Wolly I don't trust him to play regularly. Muni is a crock and can't be relied upon for that. Tex will never be good enough and there is no one in the 21s. 2 is a must.

I thought Cameron had a really good game despite being out for 6 and a half weeks. I must admit to being slightly worried when Hughes admitted in his post match interview that he'd only had a couple of training sessions and needed to be relied upon. The potential for disaster there is very worrying, thankfully it paid off yesterday!

I have to be honest Bayern I love our current selection when they are selected ALONGSIDE Ryan, but take Ryan out of any of them situations and replace him with what we think are settled players and we look like we dont know what we are doing at the back, I love Muniesa and he is one of my more popular players that I hope to see playing, when him and Woll were paired at the back against a team that new what they were doing they looked like they had never played that position before and every ball over the top of them became a goal scoring opportunity due to them both not holding their position and playing so high up the pitch, against Everton we had 63% possession and lost 0-3 with the CHs looking lost at sea on every attack, yesterday I thought we looked OK but to be fair Villa were proper dog shit and rarely threatened so my worries lon term remain. Please god fix Ryans back

If we're getting 2 in, then one of Muni/Wilson will be on the way out.

we could start a new thread every 3 days on it, that'll help his back, it won't help mine though as I need a new chair.

If we're getting 2 in, then one of Muni/Wilson will be on the way out. Wilson should have been sold a while ago. And if we sign a DM is there much of a need for Geoff? Guess he'd be kept for his versatility though.

There was a lot of talk on here last summer about getting in at least one more cb.....tbh I am rather surprised the transfer team didn't see the necessity for this. Anyone with a tendency towards getting a bad back will know that a complete recovery is extremely unlikely .

It was obvious from the start of the season it was an area that needed addressing and yet the Jan window came and went and we did nothing defensively.
Yet again our poorest runs coincide with Ryan's absence, this summer we need to purchase quality And sort this issue out. Two quality centre backs are needed for me who can battle it out to partner Ryan and who can play together if Ryan's out.

I think that the club tried very hard to strengthen our defence in January, it just didn't happen. As for a different leader for the CBs , maybe Cameron can offer his experience short term. He seemed to be supporting / organising Wollscheid yesterday

It beggars belief that we didn't even look at at least one centre-half in January. I have said this quite a few times, but we SHOULD have kept Huth, he has proved beyond doubt this season that if he was still with us, he would be first choice alongside Ryan. GCam, Muniesa and Wilson might be able to get away with playing CB against wank teams like Villa, but everytime we have played someone half decent without Ryan, we have been put to the sword and turned over without so much as a whimper

What ever happens
even if Ryan is fine -we need to go out and buy another proper pacey top quality centre half
as a top priority this summer

Seems like a ready made physio. I would not bother, if BBC reports are to be believed he is still out for the Castle game. I just hope this injury is not as serious as he had previous to the op or worse the same injury as pre op. Starting to worry now about just how serious this is and if ever he will be free from this long term.

Hughes just confirmed he is out for Chelsea, anyone slightly concerned now that this has gone from a 3 to 4 weeks to nearly two months

Bollocks. Could have an issue at RB.
Think Ryan will be back soon. Hughes said in his presser yesterday that he was 'very very close'.

He's our best defender without a doubt but there is no point in rushing him back, we're playing very well without him at the moment.
