It just a shame Tone went for it against Arsenal the week before the final. I understand he wanted to keep momentum going and all that but it might have been wiser to rest a few. It cost us in the final and we had to qualify as runners up.

How can you be certain we wouldn't have beaten Citeh or United in the semi? If we'd played as we did v Bolton we could quite easily have beaten either of them. Completely agree with that Foxey. Problem is we wouldn't have. The laundry women would have been doing overtime washing Tone's underwear and we would have played the waiting for something to drop game. Sadly that was the way it was and is with Tone which I suspect we both know. It is a frustration that many have with the guy I guess. I guess the fact that we'd beaten Man City and Arsenal in Cup ties previously under Pulis is entirely irrelevant!

Even you in your defend Pulis to the death mode you know full well for every occasion we tried to win such a game there were dozens when the manager shat himself. Don't be silly. Bonus games ring a bell?

In terms of success Tony Pulis achieved something. Promotion to the Prem (and kept us there), Cup Final, Europe. Thats some record.
Lou gave us many happy days and so did Durban.
Waddo gave us probably our best ever team

I don't think you could ever say that in home games Mark To a point no but the regular problem was that the team would take the initiative and then play hold what we have from the moment the second half started. It regularly included taking a winger off after 60 mins to bring on the likes of Dean Deano Whitehead or the like. Very frustrating for me anyway.

From the West Scrum mb - "Just had a browse on a premiership statistics website and have found some very unsurprising results. Total Passes = 20th Total Accurate Short Passes = 20th Average Pass Completion % = 19th Average Shots per game = 20th Average Shots on target per game = 20th Average Shots in the Penalty Area per game = 20th Average Goals scored per game = 19th (Villa are 20th) Average Possession % = 20th I know pro Pulis people will claim the only statistic that matters is the one that says we are 14th, but its clear we are lucky to be in that position and quite frankly the above statistics makes me embarrassed of our league position. Whats the point in staying up if we cant enjoy it?" Surprisingly a lot of 'em seem to want rid of him, the ungrateful bastards. Results are the be all and end all* *unless you're talking about SCFC post May 2013.

Waddo all day long, only manager win us a major trophy.
Think Hughes has a good chance to replicate it, providing he stays with us long enough.

Let's try this again ...... Waddo's achievements:Inherited a poor team Won Promotion to top flight Built team up to sustain top flight status Had 4 cup runs to at least semis including winning League Cup and getting to League Cup Final but losing to Leicester Ended in top half of top flight 5 times Left fans with bitterly divided opinions of him but with 25 years of hindsight everyone appreciates his tenure TP's achievements:Inherited a poor team Won Promotion to top flight Built team up to sustain top flight status Had 1 cup runs to at least semis including getting to FA Cup Final but losing to ManC Ended in top half of top flight 0 times Left fans with bitterly divided opinions of him in 25 years will everyone appreciate his tenure - TBD

Very good points Blurtonboy but... Some people on this messageboard still cannot accept that Tony was one of our greatest managers and took us from near obscurity to the near pinnacle of English football. Sad ...very sad. With the investment anyone should have been able to do it really. yes of course... anyone could have done it... Jesus wept

Bonus games ring a bell? It just smacks of wankstain cake and eat it nonsense though doesn’t it? Just searching for reasons to diminish achievements with. I mean lets really start diminishing if you want to. I mean our highest ever Premier League finishing position coincided with the Premier League’s overall worst coefficient since we got promoted so how much of an achievement was it in reality? Alternatively of course we could start celebrating and appreciating all of our achievements of the past decade?

The problem is that its always selective periods and examples. Do you see that the issue is that the side were capable of all you say but ultimately the bloke turned into a parody of himself and withdrew into a shell taking the potential of the team with him? Frustrating and ultimately self destructive.

So presumably you're taking the piss. So you think that Tony was one of our greatest ever managers then? Not taking the piss no but knew it'd get a reaction. With the money spent promotion and then staying up had to be achieved and I think it should have been. I don't think it was this miracle the some make it out to be. He clearly is but it's not a great achievement is it? We're massive underachievers.

Presumably, without looking, you'd also include a fair few interims like Paddon, Hartford, Kevan, maybe include Macari twice plus Pulis' first stint. That would take it up to 16. Would you include Durban (after Kamara was sacked)? Maybe even Sammy Chung. Edit: or maybe not Sammy Chung as Bally obviously took over from Mills. As funny as it is,I'm sure Gods wasn't including Pulis in his list of failed managers! I'm sure Gods wouldn't willingly say that Pulis was a failure. I don't think he was necessarily labelling any of them failures. Some were, some weren't. But I've checked the magnificent seventeen, and Pulis is one of them.

It is a release, that first season, the Cup Final Season, Europe were all moments etched on any Stoke fans mind. We've moved on a superb different way but a Stoke fan aged about 12-15 now, been going for 6-9 years or so, has had it as good as any in our history and a certain former manager is a huge part of that however much certain people want to deny it. I started going in the early 80s on my own in for the first time in 85. I’ve seen utter shit (as have you) and perhaps I didn’t have the solace of the 70s to keep me warm, to help put a different perspective on it but the last 10 years haven’t come close to some of the utter dogshit that went before it for me.

It cost us in the final and we had to qualify as runners up. The damage was done before then, with injuries to Higgy, Fuller and Etherington. The Arsenal game cost us a fully fit Huth, but it was a glorious victory against the Wenger boys - leaving aside the Bolton semi, it was probably our single best performance under Pulis in my opinion. For what it's worth, I thought Pulis did the right thing in playing the first team. We were on a good run and the Arsenal game kept it going.

If it means we're guaranteed never to have to have him back they can have 6 points off us every season for me. Maybe (some of) the Baggie fans feel it's worth it and they'd rather be watching what they are being treated to than suffer what's on show at our place. Good luck finding them.

I largely agree and its one of my favourite games ever. Its just that there is this myth with a few posters on here that he bottled the final and went defensive so I just like to point out we suffered in final partly cause Pulis couldnt help but attack Arsenal the week before and maybe should have been more cautious. :)
