I know, but even though he's not my cup of tea on the wing, Walters is usually good for 6/7 goals a season. Then there's Odemwingie who was coming back but never quite hit the heights. You'd assume if we had identified a winger and it was a doable deal then Wingie would have gone and the new guy brought in. I agree with what you're saying but we need to shift some weight this summer before bringing more in. He is but without two technically excellent and quick wingers we do become toothless, he does a job but we need more than that. He should never have been given a new deal ditto Crouch. There's the room for the winger. That's one thing I agree with, I think we're too quick to hand out contracts to players who barely play. I know it's a squad game and all, but sometimes I think there's more value in giving that squad place and opportunity to a younger talent or like you said, a replacement.

There's been a move away from wingers and lumping crosses into the box.
The style of play these days is much more entertaining even if not consistently successful yet, but give it time.

Maybe Hughes now thinks Afellay could do a job out wide now he is bedded in and got to grips with this league?
Ok he hasn't the pace but certainly has the trickery and ability.

Never is the answer you're looking for. Diouff should never be considered out wide ever again. As Stoke fans I think we've a proud tradition of watching perfectly decent strikers try and fail to make an impact out wide. Can't really see why we're not looking for a prospect as backup. Hughes clearly doesn't think we need another one. I just can't see the logic behind this? We go from having two excellent ones with pace and trickery to Walters and Wingie. They're vitally important to our attacking play and have to be good footballers with pace. Not to have suitable back up seems very odd at best. Walters is excellent as something a bit different but I don't just get the rationale behind only having 2 wingers. Its been like this now since last January when Assaidi left. If a winger Hughes wanted was available we'd be trying to sign him. Perhaps its as simple as there not being a wide player available that Hughes actually wants? Not one winger has become a possibility in 12 months? Can't have that. We needed one if we re-signed Moses, we needed one if we replaced Moses. We still need one today.

Still convinced traore is one for the future & he's just in the wrong enviroment atm whilst adjusting to English football, he'd be a good option to bring off the bench & develop at his own pace.
I hope we go back for him in summer.

Those attempts weren't made 12 months ago, they were made as recently as August.

They are high granted for a player in a development stage but it's nothing a reasonable transfer fee, signing on fee and cleverly structured wage won't fix though, they will want shot of them wages in summer so should be cheap, he'll want right out of there in summer & with a bit of sound advice from people he knows at scfc he should be knocking the door down. I'd imagine there won't be a huge amount of takers considering his current wage & failure to make an impact. We did try and sign him in summer which says Hughes thinks there is a player in there aswell.

Totally agree although Diouf does a decent job on the right. Is that some sort of joke. For his pace, work rate and the fact he scores goals Diouf's would be my first choice central striker but he's an horrific footballer with the touch of a rapist and often appears to be trying to tie his own legs in knots. I'd go as far as saying that other than as a central striker I never want to see him again.

It's my only real disappointment with the way things are I think a 7 man bench leaves plenty of room for a couple of young players instead of being filled with old heads but if you've given them contracts then leave them out of the match day squad and include youngsters you've got grief from the senior players and the bean counters so the obvious solution is a squad leaner on senior pro's.

As the season unfolded it became even more of a priority though and with a few of the front four seemingly unable to complete 90 minutes at the minute and Diouf basically in the stiffs it has become a full on necessity. Imbula is a real statement. I don't know how good a player he is but I'm guessing he's fucking mustard, however, the most important thing is that Hughes has been massively backed at the back end of both Windows. I just don't think enough has been done to maximise our chances of really doing something this season. It gives us a bit more flexibility but hasn't really addressed the main problems.

I think we'll manage until the end of the season (15 games) as we are, but I'm not happy with anyone else on the left/right aside from Arnie/Shaq.
The only reason I can see why we didn't bring in a winger is because we have too many strikers for effectively only 1 position. Hence in order to get them all some game time we're sticking Diouf, Odem and Walters out wide with Crouch / Joselu rotating the lone central striker role. A new winger would mean a few of these never get any game time.
Will be interesting once we have a bit of a clear out. I presume some of the older boys will be leaving in the summer?

As you say a huge statement, I think as Bayern and barks have discussed on this thread, giving out new contracts to sparsely used senior pro's has limited our room for movement. Yes it may be incremental but we're steadily building a good pool of quality players at good ages so we're definitely moving in a good direction even if obvious weaknesses are not being addressed as promptly as we'd like.

Not sure why but this expression really irritates me. It's fucking shit. Like saying he's hot, which implies you fancy him. Even worse than when people say 'sick' in a positive way. Aside from that I agree with the post.

Wingy had his best game for some time on Saturday. Think of the dynamic of signing a new winger now..Shaq is starting to settle and Arnie is in negotiations. Bring in a big name and that may well push Arnie to the exit. Gray for example looks decent but is he what we aspire to? Not sure there were many player sof the required stadard to improve the team, not the squad, available this time of year.

Competition is healthy and we currently have no option to bring off the bench when one of them is tiring and no one to come in if they get injured. There's no pressure for places either. That isn't good.

We've stood still yet still improved. Not out wide. The only change has even Shaqiri for Moses, and the former hasn't outshone the latter yet. Odemwingie and Walters are still the back up brigade, along with Diouf.

Odemwingie and Walters are still the back up brigade, along with Diouf. Overall we have (points. Position). Yesterday proved that the money is there for the right player. Perhaps (God forbid) that there wasn't the right winger at the right price available this window? I don't think that they're actively going out of their way not signing one just to piss the fans off. I'm also sure that if we didn't sign 'the right winger', they'd be slagged off for a quick fix or papering over the cracks. He/they will always be on a hiding to nothing where signings are concerned. They can't win.
