..You had been born in their neck of the woods ie Burslem, Tunstall, Porthill etc?? Just a pure accident of birth etc
Obv being from where I am and anywhere in the ST4 postcode its a no brainer, SCFC are the local team but if youd been born in the Vale lands (ie Mordor - just joking) would you have ended up a Valeite, picking them because they would be your local side? Or was there another factor like a father or uncle who was a Stoke fan and the area wouldn't have even come into it
I guess im asking how much geography plays a part in a relatively small city with two league clubs?
Worked in Chesterton for a bit and noticed it was a pretty even split
Just sort of wondering what its like to be a stoke fan in the traditional vale areas? And vice versa?
I know a fella who supports Newcastle Town down at Lyme Valley as he says they are his closest local side. Fair play

I'm a Stoke fan because my Dad took me to Stoke games, it's as simple as that.

If you were born in Barcelona, but your parents were Stokies, who would you support?

Born and bred in Tunstall, my dad was born on Boothen Road and grew up kicking a ball against the main stand at The Vic. No brainer.....

Yeah, it's usually down to where you get taken as a child. Obviously, your dad wants you to support the same team as him, so that's where you go. I was born in Ball Green. You can see the glow from the Vale floodlights from one of the bedrooms. But my dad was from the heartland of Stoke, so that's where I ended up going. If dad had been a valeite then I'd have followed him.

If you were born in Barcelona, but your parents were Stokies, who would you support? The joys of dual citizenship perhaps??
I thought parentage would be quite significant in this; my old man was a musician, not in the least sporty, so it wasn't a factor.
At least we don't have the sectarian BS that comes in Glasgow. Imagine you really like either Rangers or Celtic in terms of how they play but you have zero choice because of all the religion thing

Same as Stevie66,
From Clayton so was always Stoke City however went to both Stoke and Vale home in the late 70's with the occasional Friday night trip up to Crewe for good measure. Also saw quite a few Stafford Rangers matches in the early 80's too

There is no Port Vale side of the city. There are probably more Stoke fans in Burslem than their are Vale fans. In fact, situated daily at the top of Hamil Road is a car fully decked out in Stoke City stickers and kits. We live in Stoke-on-Trent. Port Vale is not a place that exists.

One thing Ive heard a lot about Boslem is how good the pubs are up there especially if youre 40 plus??
I think Ive only ever been three times in my life, always day time when doing a bank run in my old job, never set foot in one of the pubs.
Footie aside, is it a good night?

I would have thought back in the 90s when the clubs were more evenly matched that wouldn't have been so? The north has generally always been seen as more of a Vale catchment
Youll find most Vale fans will play down anything with the word Stoke in it
That car is doing well, if that was reversed and parked up in Lonsdale Street or Campbell Road I sadly wouldn't give it long before some tool keyed it or worse

No brainer- the only team in the area that represents the city by name.
I grew up in the north of the city (Ball Green and Chell) and my uncle who started taking me to Stoke as a young 'un was Longport (Fail heartland) born and bred! In fact for Potteries derbies at VP we'd get tickets in the home parts as it was closer.
I can safely say I'd still be a Stokie if I'd been born up Hamil Road. It's in the blood not the postcode.

They'll avoid anything with the word Stoke in....unless it's a crisis cheque from the Council.

Only trouble with Stoke town is its now getting a bit of a rep for trouble, a lot of the youngsters trying to make a name for themselves

The car to which I refer has been parked at the top of hamil road since the late 80's. I grew up and went to school in your so-called vale heartland. Trust me, there was no such place. There always has been and always will be more stoke city supporters than those of port vale in every single area of stoke on Trent.
