We signed Glenn in the championship. Walters will be up there though with Bego Yes, I realise he was signed when we were in Championship. I suppose Matty would also feature up there, and Jermaine for a while - Tony Pulis liked to bring in players that other teams might not touch at bargain basement prices.

Bojan at £1m - certainly may prove to be THE bargain of the century, but I feel he has more to prove. Arnie, yes, at £2million, I think he has kicked on too and is proving a top player now. Butland at £3.3m looks like a great buy too - he again has lots to prove - but may well leave Stoke City for megabucks in a few years - hopefully years away yet. Bego at £3.75m was great value and was worth much more than the £8m we got for him. Robert Huth - at around £5m - again was great value £5m, especially as after all those great years of service we got £3m back for him Ryan Shawcross must be up there - at £1m - what a bargain - he must rival SJW or Glen for top spot?

Although they play in different positions, Walters reminds me a lot of John Mahoney from the team of the 70s. Neither are what the purists would call a "classy" player but both got the maximum out of the talent they had and both would run all day like a Duracell Bunny! Well done tonight Jon - I'm delighted you'll get to perform in a major tournament. I'm sorry I'll have to beg to disagree about Josh. John Mahoney was a very cultured and classy player imho. I agree about the work ethic and he was a feisty tackler but he was also a great passer of the ball, wonderful technique in striking the ball and was a superb partner for Alan Hudson. I don't think you can compare Walters technique, Whelan is a closer fit and its difficult comparing eras, but I consider Mahoney technically superior. Anyway well done to Walters and Whelan, great effort though I thought Whelan was outstanding.

Walters was - he was being flogged to death by a dinosaur. A proper manager is now using him correctly. Great performance by the 2 Stoke lads tonight. Walters is far from anonymous. He's in fact very noticeable, mostly by his complete WANKNESS as a PL footballer. Rarely plays the ball and concentrates on the man, gives away ridiculous free kicks, has no awareness on the pitch and has the technical ability of Vinny Jones. He either trains like Pele or has photos on managers. I fucking despair when I see this bloke play. Some idiot is talking about agendas, yes I have one - to rid SCFC of mediocrity. Take it that your opinion has changed Lol, nice find. I can be a bit vociferous now and again. No one can deny he was looking very very poor in the last throws of the previous managers reign. He was being flogged to death. I believe that the current manager is using him to better effect. It also helps having better footballers around him.

I love seeing Jon play well but let's not pretend he's been brilliant all his time, or even most of his time at Stoke. Far better value signings have been made than Jon.

Sorro, bego, butland, huth, pieters, cameron, sjw, bojan, arnie, pennant, ethers, Beattie, nzonzi, diouf, Adam, and Johnson have all been good value for the production we've got out of them IMO.
Whelan, delap, fuller, and shawcross and others that helped us get to and stay in the Prem were also very good signings.

Although I agree with pretty much what your saying, the title of the thread states......"SINCE" promotion, so with both Shawcross and Whelan signing in the promotion season, they (in theory) don't really apply!!!

The same could arguably be said for Whelan to be honest, he's regularly taken a slating for a good chunk of his time with us (although I always thought the criticism of him was harsh during the TP years).

Without Abdoulaye Faye we would have been relegated; no question.
Since promotion our best value buy has been A.D. Faye (my lord).
