The simple answer to the question of why Ryan doesn't get picked for England is that Hodgson is a crap manager. Plus he's a very bitter old man and bears a grudge. Ryan might as well forget it until the useless old fossil pisses off.

For those who haven't seen me post this before, Henry Winter told me that Hodgson openly cites the Sweden substitute appearance to the press as the reason he won't even discuss him never mind consider Ryan for selection.
Very sad for our skipper and our national team but true nonetheless.

So you think Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would stand idly by and watch their international careers ruined because their club manager doesn't like a player of another club who's picked by England? Come on, this is entirely Roy Hodgson's decision. Im not so convinced but hey thats what this message board is about - differences of opinion. I wouldn't dismiss the influence of managers like Wenger and Ferguson when he was around, too lightly. I think club managers DO influence national sides but no where near the level you are suggesting with this. Phil Jones is keeping Ryan out of the England squad because he can play (badly) a number of positions.

Ryan Shawcross is an all-time Stoke City legend!... Infact, I'd go as far as to say that only Sir Stan comes above him on the list!

England's loss is our gain so I'm not too bothered. It's just a shame for Ryan himself, a great defender and a great leader.. yeah, something the England team has a lot of right?
As I've said before, we're just fucked if Gary "FFS I really am gash aren't I?!" Cahill is seen as the answer, well done Woy.

Hodgson could do worse than building from the back.
Butland, Johnson and Shawcross as the platform.

Jamo hadn't seen that before , quite unbelievable , hodgson who made such a balls of say the Liverpool job judging on 30 minutes alone if that .
It's the reason I genuinely hope England get royally fucked three times in France and come home in abject disgrace with the exception of jack of course . , so perhaps a rob green style howler for hart in there somewhere .
Not much I agree with Andy Jacobs on but hodgson is a clueless buffoon , and in awe of certain club too .

He should be nearing 200 England caps right now bit instead he's got a mere scandalous one! His constant overlooking actually makes me feel sorry for Ryan. He's been a model pro, has over 200 top flight appearances in a consistently solid Premier League side and he still can't get in an England squad devoid of any real centre back depth.
Fucking Hodgson.

Unbelievably, there's someone, apparently a Stoke supporter, who posts regularly in the comments section of Stoke artlcles on the Sentinel website who considers Ryan to be "a poor defender", "slow" and "dirty".
He also reckons that he can't pass, Chris Smalling is ten times the player and it won't be long "before he costs us again".
Thankfully, our IT systems at work are pretty shit and my colleagues are used to me yelling expletives at my computer.

It was the same hypocrite that said that you couldn't judge players on one performance (or similar words) when other players were having shockers... Hypocritical to the maximum!

But Shawcross's value to Stoke is immeasurable and he is the steel with the silk, providing the strong backbone that allows the club's attacking players to wreak havoc. John Percy (today's Daily Telegraph) What a beautiful, and so accurate way to spell out Ryans value in our team.

From The Bluemoon Forum:-
First Half - swap Demi with Shawcross - and we would not have been so open. Our CH's are like soft cream centre. -

If Shawcross doesn't make the next England squad then Woy needs sacking. Not letting in a goal this season when he's been on the pitch just proves the point! Wow! This never gets old!

Incredible record, however you're right to credit the entire defence. Shawcross was arguably the worst defender in our back four today and still kept West Ham out.

Yet another unsoiled sheet today.
That's about 500 minutes since Ryan came back that we haven't conceded with him on the pitch.
I can't even remember the last goal we conceded with 11 men.
