99 to win.
Well bowled England, especially Rashid. Worse test figures ever on début in the first innings, then a match turning 5 for.
Can we knock them off before the light goes?

Absolutely incredible! Marvellous stuff. Only problem is I'm out and about this afternoon watching my son's football team. So I'm going to only catch up via the live bbc scorecard. C'mon England. You can do it!

Let's just say the Pakistanis are taking it very easy so far.
Buttler opening with Moeen.

Well that was a moral victory if nothing else. 15-20 mins more and it would have been an unlikely victory. Some big positives from the match:
Cooke's big score. Some runs for several of other batsmen (Bell, Stokes, Root). Moeen has a promising start as an opener. England showing that they can bat out here. The bowling unit did very well given the wicket. Rashid doing what we thought he could - taking down the tail.

Worth reminding ourselves what Shane Warne's debut test figures were; 45-7-150-1.

Yes it demonstrated great character to come back from his first innings figures. I'd say this really puts England in a good place for the next test.

The point is, even the very best made an inauspicious start. We need to show patience with Rashid. He could be a hell of a player for us.

He's also a pretty useful batsman too. Didn't Gooch start off with a pair? Oh yes. I remember it well. 1975 v Australia. But Gooch as a test cricketer didn't really kick in until the late 80s. Seemed to me he struggled to play in a team with the flamboyant talents of Botham and Gower. Only as their stars waned did his rise.

A good point and also not fair to judge him on his bowling on a day one and two pitch, still not the finished article but seems to have the impressive ability to not worry about the previous ball he bowled whether he was hit for six or took a wicket. Equally hats off to Imran Khan that's an impressive feat 6 tests and not a single run as a batsman even for a No 11 bunny that is unlikely to be ever beaten.

Been absent on here for this Test but for the first 4 days to call it a slog is an understatement!
Magnificent knocks from Malik and Cook respectively, particularly the latter in answering the critics that when we're behind in a game we can't fight back. Rashid's figures in the first innings we're criminally unfair and in my opinion the ICC should be taking a close look at some of the pitches being produced in this part of the world.
One thing that is apparent is the fact we have to take our chances, Bell's drops and Broad's sloppiness with the no ball literally cost us hundreds of runs and hours of time, that could have been allocated to our chase.
On the topic of the 2nd innings, nothing but 10/10s all round, Jimmy set the tone before Rashid started to mesmerise with his impressive flight to secure a deserved 5 wicket haul, It's a shame the run chase never really got going and it's a shame for the game it had to end in a draw due to the light, but no blame should be attached to the umpires as they stuck to the rules as they currently stand.
Exceptionally proud of the lads and hopefully they can go one better in Dubai.

2nd Test start tomorrow.
Stokes may not make it due to being ill during the week. Patel being touted as a replacement. Would Cook actually bowl him more than Root? If not, might as well play Plunkett or Jordan.

Underway in 1 min. Pakistan won the toss and will bat. England unchanged which means, I guess, the frequency of Stokes's visits to the men's room has reached an acceptable level.
Cook's pre match quotes are interesting...
Clearly doesn't much fancy his spinners. But I don't buy why 4 seamers gets you more control than 3. Shades of the selection conservatism that dominated the Windies tour in the spring. It's clear Patel is only there if Ali or Rashid are unfit.

Maybe he wants to protect Jimmy Anderson - lessen the load on his ageing limbs. We probably don't want him bowling more than 20 overs on these pitches.

I know we never took many to Pakistan, cause it's "dry", but is it the same in the Dubai grounds... Pack it in Stan!

378 all out - great effort by England.
Particular shout out for Wood.
Now lets see what England can do. A score of 500+ would put is in a strong position. Plus bowling Pakistan out in 4 session means there is plenty of time left in the game.

Cracking effort by England this morning, looks a bit in this pitch though both for the quicks and more so the spinners. 378 might not be a bad score.....
EDIT - Bollocks just put TMS on and we've already lost 2 wickets!

EDIT - Bollocks just put TMS on and we've already lost 2 wickets! One down, two down if Bell is at #3. Sad to have to say this but.. Bell... End. Still, Cookie and Rooty are now in. Our two best batsmen by a distance. This third wicket partnership could well determine the direction of this test.

I said at the start of the series that this would be Bell's last series as an England player and it's looking more and more likely. We should be looking to the future now and giving Taylor a consistent run in the team.

Riaz looks a cracking quick bowler to be fair as well, well over 90mph and a really agressive short ball. How we play the leggie here is going to be key, if these two can bat a seesion will be even steven but if we lose a couple quickly could be a long test.....

I do have to say Mark Wood is probably my favourite player in this "new England", he just comes across as such a grounded, passionate and down to Earth bloke whilst being able to bowl at 90MPH, what's not to like?!

It's early but our opener and number 3 problems still seem a hindrance to us being a genuine first class outfit.

Stumps at 182/3 with Root well placed and Bairstow demonstrating great patience, game on gentlemen. Crazy that they don't start earlier when it's well known that the light goes so quickly over there. The ICC are pretty usually at using their common sense when it comes to test cricket....
