We seem to have started a trend of rather than playing proper first class games ahead of the Tests, playing a couple of short knock-abouts. We did the same in the Windies. Don't know where this idea has come or if it makes any sense, but I guess when you have 4 tours in this calendar year then there isn't that much time for stuff apart from the proper internationals. I guess it's because there's no TV money in warm up games so the quicker they get to the money shots (ie tests and international limited overs games) the better as far as the cricketing authorities are concerned. Of course, the fact this could damage the product (reduce the quality of cricket seen on TV) is not a primary concern. As long as it doesn't damage TV revenue.

Well game on.
The side as predicted - Rashid in. Moeen opens. 4 seamers and 2 spinners.
Pakistan win the toss and bat.
Anderson takes an early wicket, but it'll be a long day.

Particularly if we drop simple catches. Oh dear Mr Bell. You've been making a habit of that recently. Sort of re-enforces the impression of a player not quite up to it any more.

First morning drops on the first day of a series can have an unfortunate way of becoming hugely significant for the series. Think Haddin dropping Root in the summer and Carberry doing the same to Haddin (albeit later in the day) at the Gabba in the last Ashes series down under. Let's hope Bell's miss isn't so significant!

Yea, and chances on these flat wickets early in the test are going to be few and far between.

Now Broad gets a wicket from a No Ball. Inexcusable.

Now Broad gets a wicket from a No Ball. Inexcusable. What I don't understand is the coaching staff must be watching the live feed and have seen that he'd overstepped before (without being called). So, let him know so he can adjust his run-up.

I'm in the UAE this week on holiday, lucky enough to get tickets on Thursday, not looking like the best of starts so far.

More the coincidence that I'm here on holiday during the test as opposed to getting tickets. Although is Islamic new year on Thursday (national holiday) so should be a little more packed

Probably a good chance, if you want, to meet some of the players.

Cheers bud. Like I say pure coincidence this tour is on whilst I'm here. That's also on my radar, maybe able to speak to a player or two!

286-4 at stumps, definitely Pakistans day but could of been so much better for England. Bell should stay out there for remedial catching practice, what a useless twat he is.

Yes - a good day for Pakistan. How good we'll get to know later tomorrow or maybe the day after when England have had their first knock. Let's hope we've picked up some tricks since the last series there; 192, 160, 327, 72, 141, 252. These were our scores then in six innings. Scary! Edit: Bell's average in that series was 8.5. Very scary!!

There's nothing in the Pakistan bowling attack that should be keeping the English batsmen up at night, that said this England side has previous of making the flattest of tracks look like a bowlers paradise. I fully expect Pakistan to score 500+ and England to lose a few early wickets. I just can't see Ali working out opening the batting and I have a feeling this will be Bell's last series in an England shirt.

With a big score posted they have enough quality in their attack to put us under pressure, their bowlers are adept at reverse swing and despite Shah the leggy been injured they have decent spin options. As stated above our scores on the last tour were embarrassing and whilst I think we'll improve this has got a comfortable Pakistan win written all over it for me.....

It's also been a fair few years since we've had to face a good spin attack in turning conditions.

It's just that in the continued absence of a certain cricket lover from near Blackpool, I feel someone has to offer a little blind optimism, however misguided or well intentioned. ;-)

Yes early days, we need a good day tomorrow and our bating, which is incredibly deep, needs more than a few 50's. At least a 2 or 3 will need tons this match for us to have a chance. There's not many of them who I look at and think they're likely to get a 100. Root? Yes. Cook? Moeen? Maybe? Stokes? Butler? Barstow? Bell? We can but hope.

Boy is this wicket looking flat. Just no competition between bat and ball. Personally I think these type of wickets do nothing but bad to test cricket. The toss can decide games. The 2 dropped catches and wicket off a no-ball looking ever so more important now though.

Ever likely there's one man and his camel watching...... That said we'll probably still implode and get bowled out for 250!

I love watching any cricket. But this is just tedious. Countries need to be forced to produce wickets that encourage competitive cricket if we're to save the test cricket.

I'm a test cricket bore mate, love it and would watch it all day every day if I could. But this is dire, absolutely dire and I'd say the same if England were batting as well. Pakistan would be better off playing their home series in England, with the Pakistani community we have they'd fill the likes of Edgbaston easily and they'd be able to play in front of an ACTUAL crowd which is what it's all about.......

Could agree more. When bat dominates ball like it has done, then it's almost pointless watching. I can well do without the 20-20 bash bang wallop in test cricket but there has to be some threat from the bowler.
