I'd be amazed if he played before the new year. Good luck Ryan.

8 weeks is best case. Worst case slip of the knife and wheelchair. All of the spectrum in between. Apologies to Ryan and family if you read this, but it's the harsh truth. He's got a massive road ahead and I wish him well. "It's the harsh truth" No it's not, it's sensationalistic bollocks!!! He's having spinal surgery not a heart transplant. Here we have a professional athlete whose operation will almost certainly be done by one of the best in the business. The OP will be minimally invasive and he will have access to top quality rehab. He will be fine. Stop spouting rubbish. Do your research. You obviously don't have a clue about the subject or people who are talking about it on here. Your ignorance of this is astounding.

It's amazing how little faith Stoke supporters have in our players and the management staff. It appears we are a squad riddled with poor players managed and coached by a bunch of buffoons.

this is bad news for Ryan but Im optimistic either Wolly or Geoff will grab the bull by the horns and use this to step up and really perform

Im certainly not saying that but I really do think we are taking some big risks going into what will be a pivotal season - risks that could have been better mitigated Too much change, enforced change, young players, old players - Who the fuck knows it might all be brilliant but the news that we are going to be without the man who has been our rock during and since our promotion for a prolonged period of time really does put a new perspective in terms of the decisions that have been made during this transfer window.

Funnily enough a couple of exposures Of our weakness before the window closes might just get that message home .i hope not of course but every cloud and all that .
As posted elsewhere we have a eclectic mix of young old and totally unproven loaners and owned . It might work but an Increasing majority sense not .
The squad now in my mind needs a £ 25 / 30 million injection of quality and Steel and physical presence .and that message needs ramming down Mr Scholes throat where that pathetic guardian article came from

Please don't skimp and penny pinch in this situation stoke, we need a leader to replace our rock in defence.
This is of more importance with the loss of nzonzi as MVG won't offer the same defensive qualities.

Wish folk would stop saying this. Back operations are very risky and no doubt the club were trying to avoid this. They have said it in the article. Three people I know personally have had back surgery that has not been a complete success so I can fully understand why the club and Ryan didn't opt for an operation at the end of last season. I stand by comments I made in previous post that we won't see Ryan back before Christmas if at all next season. It's staggering that people think that the club wouldn't take on board the expert advice that people much more qualified than them on the subject of back problems will have given them. Peter Coates has made it unequivocally clear that a back operation for Ryan was the very last resort. Do people seriously think that he should have ignored the advice of specialists on this subject? We're talking here of our club captain and one of the best players we've ever had. Do you honestly think the club aren't going to do the very best they possibly can for Ryan Shawcross? But hey, as long as we've got somebody to blame, that's the main thing. Is he having the operation?

To be fair I said it was worse case and it is, but the risk is still there regardless of the surgeon doing it and the techniques they use. Without being too graphic, the process of doing any op on a disc, whether it be normal procedure or micro procedure, is horrific. The reason I know all this is because I've been sat down in front of a spinal surgeon and had it spelled out to me in plain bloody english!

We all know that any medical procedure can go wrong but the wheelchair comment was over dramatic and insensitive, who says he is having spinal surgery ? All we know is that it's back pain it could be any number of things associated with back pain. And I know all about the dangers you are on about my best mate has two prolapsed discs and I have seen him go through all sorts to try and help him.

Well as much as I would love to have Ryan holding together our back four, he needs to take his time and make sure that when he does return he is back to his best. Be it two months or six he must take his time. With the surgery I am sure he has weighed the risks with the club and his family and if this is the best option we just need to wait and hope for the best. Good luck Ryan and I cannot wait to see you back on the pitch when you are ready!

I don't think anyone is saying surgery is always safe and in my opinion any operation if can be avoided should be.
I was saying that surgery was spoken about and I'm sure it was said that he was due to have the op in the closed season where as now he is having the surgery any way and we are now months behind where we could of been.
Again no one is saying it's straight forward but the surgeon wouldn't of advised if there was any serious repercussions and as said above he would have the best doctors and specialists in the business during and after the operation.

Ignorant I don't think so. I can't believe for one minute that someone who has had a back op and/or worked in that profession would be so flippant about it. Its not flippant at all. Its a sense of perspective. Of course there are risks with any procedure, there are risks from taking over the counter medicines. I had no choice with my OP, it had to be done otherwise I would have been in serious trouble, thankfully it was a success. Many people have fantastic results from surgery I have seen it first hand both personally and professionally. Your post was dramatic and insensitive and you based it on your own experience. I would never trivialize spinal surgery its a huge thing to undertake and if possible should be avoided but Ryan has absolutely everything in his favour. I prefer to take the point of view that he will have a great result and be back playing for us as quickly as possible. If that is flippant then so be it. You stick to your point of view and I will definitely stick to mine. Talk of wheelchairs and ending his career is not appropriate in my opinion.

Squeaky bum time, but we'll pull through somehow. Step forward Muniesa/Wilson/Wollscheid. I really hope for a quick recovery for Ryan, but I'll be surprised if we see him on the pitch before Christmas. All the best, Ryan!

Take on board all the points about Muni, Wilson, Cameron and Wolly - but I'll still be very surprised if we don't see a front-line centre-half arrive in the next 3 weeks. Just too many question marks about that group if we're going to be relying on them for potentially half the season
