Who would you all go for then?
It's Charlie's best position, he is more forward thinking than N'Zonzi and turns defence into attack quicker.
I'm not saying it's a dead cert fit I'm saying it's worth a look.

Not disciplined enough Not quick enough Not conservative enough in possession Not as good an engine The gains Charlie would bring to the team would be insignificant when weighed up vs what we'd lose.

If you assume that Bojan is going to be playing in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, then you can't really have all the water carrying being done by one player. Well at home against teams who've come to park the bus you might (just) get away with it but that still leaves 70% of the matches in a season when you'd need a totally different player to Adam in there ... Bayern's list is pretty good.

Sidwell was signed as cover for N'Zonzi but I think Adam is the one who's grabbed the bull by the horns. He played in that role for Blackpool and that's where he got his big money move to Liverpool. It didn't work out obviously but he clearly can play in that role.

They didn't play with a man in a hole but had two water carriers doing all the dirty work for him in a 4-3-3. That is his best position, absolutely, playing deep with the whole pitch in front of him, so he can spray balls over the park whilst two players do the graft and then he occasionally ghosts into the box. That's not 4-2-3-1 though.

The N'Zonzi role is certainly closer to Adam's job at Blackpool than the Bojan role is. We're a far better team than Blackpool and I think it's unfair to suggest that Charlie would disregard any defensive duties. He certainly loves a challenge in the way that Scholesy did. Like I say, no guarantees it'd work but I'd rather see it tried than Muni in the Whelan role which has been touted. I genuinely think Charlie could do a good job if given the opportunity.

With respect mate I don't think N'Zonzi's role at Stoke is anything remotely like Adam's role at Blackpool, they're two completely different types of players, playing in two completely different types of systems. Muni playing instead of Whelan is a totally separate discussion I would have thought.

It's worked tbf.

Get the ball from the defensive minded players and look to bring the attackers into play as quickly as possible. It's not daft to suggest that Adam would muck in defensively it's just remains to be seen how effective he'd be. If it works, great, £15m saved. If it doesn't then we've not lost anything.

It's worked tbf. Exactly - recently we've gone slightly towards to how Blackpool actually set up. It's more of a 4-3-3 or in reality a 4-1-2-3. Adam isn't playing as far forwards, so we don't really have a man in the hole and Whelan and N'Zonzi are doing the water carrying but because Adam is playing deeper, he doesn't slow the play up as he would do if he was in the hole. It also means he's harder to mark too. Try and fit Bojan into that though ... it's not going to happen.

Well it's getting late and obviously the ideal situation is N'Zonzi stays and this debate is rendered pointless.
I wouldn't see an issue with Adam and Bojan starting, on the contrary I think Adam's ability to pick out a player such as Moses or Bojan from deep could see us as the best counter-attacking team in the country. In my opinion Charlie has got the positional sense in him to play in the centre alongside a Whelan or Cattermole who purely sit in front of the back four.
I'll leave you to it from here on in.

I can't even believe this is a serious question. A definite no. I like Charlie, except for his lack of discipline ( a red card waiting to happen) but he is nowhere near the same player as the Fonz. I'd be gutted if we lost N'Zonzi, he is the glue that holds us together and makes us work.

Some have compared Adam with Scholes One thing they do have in common, they're both terrible tacklers and walking yellow/red cards. As a result both have reputations of being dirty players.

I really hope we can keep N'zonzi. If he leaves one thing's for sure, his replacement will not be popular on here or at the Brit.

In answer to the OP, could he? Yes. He and Sidwell are probably the only midfielders we have on the books who could work in that role.
But the team would be much much weaker without N'Zonzi
