I really feel for Lyth, selectors had the chance to give him an opening spot against the West Indies to bed in against a "lesser" attack and instead they throw him into the deep end against one of the best attacks in World Cricket at the moment in conditions they thrive in. Lyth will be ok ....you have to play against the best in Tests ,it would have been nice for him to have made his debut in the West Indies on those helpful batting wickets ...but if he's good enough he will prevail ...hopefully he will . Indeed. Seize the moment. Guess the point is being stuck in the Windies with no game time meant he wasn't able to build up a run of form coming into his test debut. Which is unfortunate. But it is what it is. Now it's down to him. Edit; great article, Growing pains for young England, from ESPN Cricinfo reflecting on the performances of some of the younger players and echoing thoughts from contributors to the crickets threads on this board! We've got some fine talent coming through. Patience is required though.

Morning session of day 4 coming up and the game is well set. Time for someone to do something special with bat or ball to grab the game. I have a suspicion it's going to be Cook - I hope so anyway. Did great in the evening session yesterday, be even better if comes out after tea today with his pads on.
If he comes out after tea with his pads off we are in trouble!

Well done Ben Stokes - great 100.
Really well done Cooky. You've turned it round and given your team a chance.
And well done New Zealand. It was joyful watching them making a point of all shaking Cook's hand when they were coming off after what must have been a long hard day. This is what cricket is about.

Birth of a superstar? What a fabulous innings from BA Stokes. They were comparing him to ITB. He looks as though he'll be a better batsmen, but he's way way poorer ATM on his bowling.

I'm really pleased to see Cook back amongst the runs. Maybe I feel sorry for him because he gets so much stick for his captaincy, but I'm very happy to see him racking up centuries again.

Stoke' s innings is probably the best I've seen from an England player since Botham at Leeds in ' 81 .....marvelous clean hitting ....proper batting , no gimmicky strokes , the real deal .....and Alistair Cook looks to be right back at his best , he held the innings together today with a a typical Cook century ...that also was marvelous to watch if a little more understated than the pyrotechnics at the other end ....good day for Enhland .

Don't worry there will be plenty more criticism of his captaincy from Botham and Co. If he hasn't declared by 12 in the morning .

So chaps, what do we reckon tomorrow, push to 350 runs and declare? Wait until we got bowled out? Declare overnight an start the day with 8 slips?
I hope for (obviously an England win) a great days cricket that has us guessing all the way through, it's been such a great test match and deserves a fitting finish.

I've seen enough in him in this last couple of innings to suggest that in time he could be selected purely as a batsman .....and I don't say that lightly .....anything in the bowling line would be a bonus .

In this case it is IMO way off the mark. Folk getting way ahead of themselves. The superb batting display on day 4 took us from a probable defeat to a potential victory but not yet a dominant position. If we had lost another wicket yesterday we could have folded quickly with a lead around 300 which would leave New Zealand well in the game. England, and Cook, were right to see the day out. Get back in the hutch at stumps and decide then how to approach tomorrow. I reckon we'll aim to bat for between an hour and an hour and a half tomorrow morning and look to score 50-60 runs. Then give us around 2 1/2 sessions to bowl them out. Alternatively we come out slogging for 30-40 minutes. Declaring overnight I think is unlikely but possible. I just don't see us having done so much good work in building a position of some authority we concede too much of the advantage we have secured. I've no doubt Warney would declare immediately. Then again, if I had Warne in my side I'd declare then as well.

I think you're right. He seems to have a great eye - as all the best batsman do. It'll be interesting to see how his bowling develops - to be a genuine pace bowler brought on in short spells, or another medium fast more stock type bowler.

Superb innings from Cook. For the sake of the game be nice if we added a quick 30 runs and got bowled out here, knowing McCullum they'll try and chase it could be a real spectacle.......

Not really sure of Warne's point here, he hooked a ball for 6, then got out trying to slog it.......we bat down to 8.....

Settle down folks could be a cracker..... As a sidenote isn't it a breath of fresh air the spirit in which this game has been played, plenty of good natured banter (not over the top sledging), and lots of respect shown to the century makers at the end of sessions/play. In hindsight should have been a 3 match series this one 2 just isn't enough.

Not really sure of Warne's point here, he hooked a ball for 6, then got out trying to slog it.......we bat down to 8..... There's a huge gulf between #8 and #9. Need to close that somehow otherwise having a quality batsman to #8 becomes of little value if the last three in the line up are all rabbits. One way is to move Wood ahead of Broad. At least he gets in line. In terms of batting quality today you'd also now go for Anderson ahead of Broad. Shame - but Broad has become a number eleven.
