Absolutely brilliant from England. Take a bow boys. 408-9. Root superb. Butler amazing. And a special word for Plunket. 2 sixes of the last three balls took us past that 400 landmark.

Those two sixes from Plunkett at the death had me in stitches, we've just batted that well it became funny towards the end!
That partnership from Buttler & Rashid was one of the best I've ever seen!
Highest ODI score from England Highest 7th wicket partnership in ODI History First time a team has scored 400 in an ODI in England
What a brilliant performance!
Just hope the bowlers can produce something now. This pitch looks extremely good and New Zealand are more than capable of chasing this down.

Don't light the cigars yet - on this track if B Mc gets in things could turn very nasty !!!!

Don't light the cigars yet - on this track if B Mc gets in things could turn very nasty !!!! It could be very close even with McCullum out but even if we lose this game I don't care. For the first time we've shown the sort of intent in our ODI batting that has become the norm for the other top nations. Bodes well for the future.

Totally agree - at no point (apart from the 1st ball) has there been the air of impending doom that usually hangs over any England one day game.

So who saw that coming? Probably the most complete England ODI performance I've ever witnessed. Keep it up lads!

Superb all round performance, a joy to watch. If only we'd released the shackles 6 months ago the World Cup would have been a lot more entertaining. Chuffed particularly for Rashid, his confidence could have been completely crushed by his treatment in the Windies but he batted and bowled beautifully. NZ will come out fighting I'm sure and it could be a real explosive series. Happy days.....

2nd ODI later today - and hopes, but maybe not expectations, are high after that superb performance from England in the opening game.
What's exciting is the side is full of players who play dynamic cricket so if today isn't a repeat of the Butler / Root show there are plenty of others that can step up and play in the same devastating style; Hayles, Stokes, Morgan, Roy...
Ok it may fall apart - but at least this side is equipped with what it takes to look at scores of 350+ with some confidence.
It's our best looking limited overs side (batting wise at least) since that T20 World Cup winning team which was selected on the basis of being the best team to win T20 games.
Here's hoping for a good day / night at what will be a packed Oval!

Butler is going to be a very special player, people who watched him regularly at somerset talk of a once in a generation talent, he's also not a knob like KP. He has done well in test cricket but sooner or later he will tee off and never look back let's hope it's this summer.

We can do it!

For quite a while I've thought that the ODI format was a load of garbage and a sort of crappy sideshow that gets in the way of the proper cricket in the Tests and the considerably more fun T20 games.
However, this series is doing a lot to win me over. What a fantastic exhibition the last two matches have been.

Another very decent batting performance. It's such a shame we couldn't have used this mentality a long time ago - it's not like people suggested it is it?

Plunkett and Jordan out for the rest of the series. Craig Overton called up. Wood for Plunket is a straightforward replacement and I guess we'll see David Willey in for Jordan. I'm really interested in seeing him - left arm fast medium will give us something different in our bowling and he can bat; 60 off 27 balls the other day in a T20. I reckon this makes us a potentially stronger team because Jordan, sadly, seems more effort than effect. And a specialist 1st slip to spin ain't enough if your bowling isn't up to scratch and your batting is struggling. Bags of potential but not ready yet for a sustained run in the international side. Anyway - kick off in an hour. Looking forward to another good one!

Not the best of starts but we do bat deep. Now the Mrs wants to go to Ikea -

Fallen away badly towards the end there, but it's another score of 300, the first time we've done it in 3 consecutive matches and we've got a very young and inexperienced squad on a steep learning curve, let's hope we can take some early scalps and make it an interesting chase.

Ok - today wasn't our day! But positive play was good to see.
Meanwhile news of our next opponents this summer. They completed a second comprehensive win against the Windies to take the series 2-0. A much more impressive outcome than the previous visitors to the Caribbean - us!

Seen some debate on the TMS page wondering if a 500 score is possible in an ODI. The consensus is of course it is at some point. I recckon today may be that day.
NZ started, as usual, like a house on fire. If McCullum and Guptil stay there for a good few overs 500 is well within their capability.
Then we chase it down!
