54-0 at lunch. Solid stuff for England. A very big day for Lyth. Home ground. Good batting conditions. Great opportunity for a maiden test century. Think he's looked very solid so far. Edit; he delivered. Well done fella - 2nd test and a first test hundred.

At the risk of putting the mockers on him I think Lyth has the wherewithal to do a good job for England for a few years. Although he comes from the 'dark side' of the Pennines its pleasing to see just how many of this current side are from north of Watford!

Does a bunch of blokes in fancy dress clutching pints of beer singing God Save the Queen fill you with patriotic pride or make you cringe and wish they'd shut the fuck up.

When we tour Aus I genuinely think it's hilarious as the locals can't seem to comprehend why that even when we are getting battered they just carry on.

They seem to manage a few more songs over there. Edit; just heard on the radio that there's someone dressed as the Queen and everytime he leaves his seat they give a chorus of GSTQ. Guess you have to be there!

Suddenly everything is looking more difficult. A run out for Lyth, then Ballance (with a bewilderingly bad defensive shot) and Root gets a beaut means the game is back in the balance at 240-4.
Time for Bell to deliver.

A brilliant final session for New Zealand makes the game very interesting. Still trail by 98 with just 5 wickets to go and NZ with a new ball just 8 overs old. The first session tomorrow could be very important. It should be very entertaining.
I wonder if that sloppy bowling for the last two wickets this morning will hurt us. Broad, a big part of that, adopted Beefy's bowling tactics post '85 and tried to buy wickets with short bowling. He succeeded. His five for was the most expensive 5 wicket haul, in terms of runs conceded per over, in the history of cricket. Apparently he wasn't too happy to be informed of that achievement!

To be honest I couldn't care less , whether the players are Northern or Southern or as has been the case often in the past South African ! .....if they perform for England that's all that matters to me .

Wrong strategy this morning, should have swung the bat not waited for the ball to kiss the edge again and again. Real pity as both Buttler and Moeen have the ability too as well.
First innings deficit highly likely.

Since he practically won us the Ashes in 2013, Bell's scored 866 runs at 30, needs a big one second time around.
He's earned the time to re-find his form but there's plenty waiting in the wings, James Taylor at the forefront for me.

I know mate and as I've said in the past I'm a huge Bell fan and he's probably my favourite England player to watch at the crease when he's fluid and on form. It's just with players waiting in the wings and with him getting on a bit there's only going to be more questions. But if there's a player to re-find his form, it's Belly!

Yeah - but that was on a flat pitch against a modest bowling attack. It should have been a stepping stone to better things; a knock to find some form. Just as Cook, to his great credit, has done. Sadly it looks like it was nothing of the sort. Just a prelude to more disappointing batting. I'd be looking very seriously at Taylor for the first Ashes test.

The dog shit bowling at the end of the NZ first innings could cost us massively. Fortunately they returned the favour at the end of ours! Overall - from a position of 215-1, 350 all out is a very disapointing score. We failed big time against the second new ball.

Are you by any chance from Yorkshire ? .....A test hundred is a test hundred ....you can only score them on the pitch you are playing on .Bell will come good.

Strong in the arm, weak in the head I think is the expression. But that also applies in Yorkshire. And, possibly, all points north of Watford Gap. Anyway, I'll defend my comments a little. The Windies attack is modest when compared to NZ and the Aussies bowlers. Improving for sure, promising - absolutely. But a long way from the best. And there are test centuries and there are test centuries - some undoubtedly more significant than others. As I said Bell, after a poor two years, should have been able to use his as a platform to better performances as Cook has done. Instead - he's been very poor. I think he has had more than enough time. There's other players that have done enough to take his spot.

NZ batting very well this afternoon.
Taylor seems to have rediscovered his form playing (mostly) orthodoxly and with purpose. Guptill looking positive. They are belting along. Our bowling looks anaemic.
