The OP asks the question "who are these people that are giving the manager no credit for our highest ever PL finish". Can I give him the answer, there are no such people, it's all in your mind Mick. It is a question posed by the Oatcake editorial team Geoff hence this thread Are you saying it is a figment of their imagination? BM

Of course it is Mick. There can't be any Stoke City supporter who fails to recognise the superb job done by Hughes in achieving 9th position.

If I have read the posts of Stafford correctly he has acknowledged the job Hughes has done.

I too find it laughable that anyone could truly pick fault with Mark Hughes and the job that he is doing at our club. However, everyone knows that the reason Hughes has been able to build a team of top class footballers whilst spending next to nothing is because TP invested his resources so wisely, giving the new manager the chance to progress whilst spending nothing! Hughes uses more of TP's players than his own. TP bought some great players and a few howlers. Hughes has barely put a foot wrong. Part of the reason why Hughes hasn't had to spend big is because Bego, Shawcross, Wilson, Cameron, Whelan, Nzonzi, Walters, Crouch, Adam have all had a part to play. He's even extending their contracts now. Just accept that TP was great for us just as Hughes is. It couldn't be more win, win.... I'm not a fan of the 'Hughes uses more of TP's players than his own' argument since no one can expect a new manager to buy a brand new team in 1 season. He's obviously going to use existing players and replace them gradually (as he feels necessary). Not to mention, he has got the budget Tone had. I expect that when the opportunity arrises, Hughes will find upgrades for Wilson, Cameron and Adam.

Is it not possible to be grateful to TP for what he achieved and be thankful that Hughes has carried on what TP started. Stoke would not be where we are now without both managers input. It really is that simple.

I think it's fair to say the criteria has suddenly changed in some cases Wuzza. Some people are suddenly a lot less tolerant of poor results and performances than they used to be. You are not seriously suggesting that had we rocked up at Championship Blackburn under TP and gone for 4 the reaction would not have been equally as vitriolic? I never mentioned the Blackburn game. It never takes long after a couple of defeats though for the usual suspects to start playing the 'lost our identity' card or even suggest the manager lacks the all-important "PASHUN!" because he doesn't spend every second going mental on the touchline. 'We need to sign more players with heart and less from Barca B' was one of my favourite recent ones.

I just don't get people who point score about this kind of shit.
We're all Stoke fans, we were before Pulis took over and we will be long after Hughes leaves.
It doesn't matter who did what in the past really, just look at where we are now. Hughes is doing a brilliant job, so stop being wet and be happy for a change. If any fanbase should know, it's ours about how quickly things can go tits up.

I know most of you won't have seen this yet but the editorial for tomorrow's Oatcake is rightly having a pop at the complete imbeciles who gave Mark Hughes a viscous verbal booting following the embarrassing defeat at Blackburn. One joker apparently rang Radio Stoke to suggest that Hughes was taking us into a relegation battle. So who are these people that are giving the manager no credit, for our highest ever PL finish? No credit for our highest points total in the PL at this stage of the season? No credit for bringing a quality of football that we haven't seen since the days of Waddo? No credit for putting together a team of top class footballers whilst having the lowest net spend in the PL? Who are these people that fail to recognise that we have a manager that has a proven track record of achievement at the highest level often with clubs smaller than us? The editorial goes on to say that this is not about a previous manager but I think it is. The people I know who are most likely to jump on Hughes at the slightest opportunity were the very same people who would defend the last manager to the hilt no matter how outrageous team selections, tactics and performances became. Has anyone else noticed this within their circle of acquaintances and friends? BM It was the same idiots who used to have a go at Pulis. And no doubt their older relatives who had a go at Waddo. And no doubt a further generation back they had a go at McGrory. Some folk are simply never satisfied.

No surprise that Pugsley is onboard spouting his obsessive drivel about our ex-manager again.
We have been well managed for ten years. It's that simple.
It's sad that despite how well out current manager is doing some people can't wait to stick the boot into our ex-manager again. Looks like being constantly proved wrong over the years has stuck with them

This thread is about the Oatcake having a go at people sticking the boot into Hughes (and showing no gratitude for what he has achieved) not Pulis!I was just observing that the people I notice who are first in line to give Hughes undeserved and vicious abuse after any poor performance are the very same people who would hear no wrong about the previous manager and were the most devastated when he got sacked. Certain relegation they spouted. Looks like it is they who are having the problems with being proven hopelessly wrong! BM

Has anyone else noticed this within their circle of acquaintances and friends? BM Sadly I think there is some truth in this but I would like to think that the MAIN reason for any negativity post Blackburn is that EXPECTATIONS have been raised (credit to the manager and players) and there was a an expectation that we WOULD progress beyond Blackburn...the days of Stoke City 'charity' FC are now waning, witness Villa last Saturday...in the past that would have been a home banker with them having a new manager...the tide is turning...along with this increased success inevitably comes the higher expectation level Maybe that's why I still have the "settle for a point mentality", it lessens the disappointment if we don't win games that maybe we should, it also heightens the elation when we succeed against the odds Funny things footie fans, aren't we?

Some people have no idea how difficult it has been to be a Stokie over the years. Plenty like myself, and a good many of the recent Stokie's see it as it really is.A few have no idea of bad times and bad results, and need time to be adjust. We are one of the better teams in the Prem, regardless of what many might think and say. We have been pretty secure since TP got us up, and MH has only improved things. FFS, let's all enjoy what we have while we have it. We could be Villa, Sunderland, QPR or Burnley fans who see their Prem league existence teetering on the edge.

BristolMick's anti Pulis crap continues. Are you related to Gislason? ????? Gislason did not want Pulis sacked. It was Magnus who pulled the plug, against Gislason's advice. Then came the mighty Bossie, and Magnus was proved right. OS.

I stand corrected. My understanding was that Magnus and Gislason had tired of Pulis. I'm just grateful that Kaupthing are not our bankers. Anyway I think BristolMick is still off the mark. Some people's ridiculous criticism of Hughes after one result is little to do with Pulis lovers and more to do with the intolerance of modern football supporters, many of whom I suspect weren't with us during the wilderness years. But talk about bearing a grudge, let it go BM, you sound bitter and twisted.

The OP is both very right and very wrong. Right Mark Hughes is doing a hell of a job - wrong in that people who loved TP and the work he did for us are not having a pop anymore than anyone else. Thats just the usual devisive paranoid propoganda from the standard sources.. I think it's fair to say the criteria has suddenly changed in some cases Wuzza. Some people are suddenly a lot less tolerant of poor results and performances than they used to be. You had to tolerant and able to take defeat well for the past 30 odd years as a pre-requisite of being a Stoke fan. Some daft buggers will never understand the unbridled optimism that years of misery, defeat, being rained on at Torquay away, sadness, pain & loss actually brings to ones character and constitution
