After seeing this, I have to accept we're in a completely different era of film-making. Compared to the originals, it seemed somewhat rushed in places, as though there is a fear these days of slowing the pace to allow an audience time to absorb and dwell in film moments. Maybe film-makers are correct as people are getting dumber... It's still a very good movie but the more new Star Wars stuff there is, the more I have to realise that the originals were sprinkled with magic dust from a different era of film-making and they will likely never be matched... I enjoyed it I agree it had a similar plot to a new hope but the introduction to the new characters especially Rey came across well. SPOILER my mate believes she is one of the Jedi twins? But surely Leia & Han would had mentioned it during the film? Personally I think there is a connection to Luke? Which probably be discovered in Episode 8? It will be interesting to know Finn's back story? Off spring from Cloud City???

Thought there was a connection to Luke though from the flashback bit when she discovers the lightsaber. I didn't like that bit at the time of watching it but on reflection I think that was the moment the 'force awakes' and everything went bat shit crazy. Agree with starkiller, some bits were rushed but that is modern day audience. JJ would have been slaughtered for a slow burner due to excitement levels.

I think that was the problem. He tried to satisfy too many people without coming up with an original film. So many plot holes. He could have done a whole film on why things were the way they were, and completely ignored it . The new bad guy was very undewelming. The leads do ok, but script is just appalling . They have nothing to work with. Just one action scene after another. The whole film feels so rushed. No time to digests events at the end. You thought Kylo Ren was underwhelming? Because I thought he was great, loved his persona and his intrinsic conflict. There was a lot of plot holes but there was in A New Hope don't forget, had to guess about the Clone Wars and even the Force which are referenced without much explanation. Next one is the big one for me, it could even be worth doing some back story in that film because it really needs to not remind us in any way of Empire Strikes Back because then fans will be pissed off. There is still plenty of scope with these unknown and strong characters for things to get interesting. Would still give Force Awakens at least 8.5/10.

I like how the SW technology hasn't evolved like it did in the prequels. It doesn't look too CGI either I have no idea what you're talking about, SW and CGI. Been taking obnoxious git lessons from Mark Kermode?

Yeah, I thought he was appalling. Again , very little motive or back story. . The big baddy seemed to be taken from Harry Potter. There going to have come up with something original for the next film, but I guess they will lift the yoda stuff from Empire for a chunk of it.
I'm waiting for the DVD, mind.

Just a word on the back story. We don't see it in New Hope because it's the first one . In this film, we have already invested in the Star Wars universe, so I think it's important we understand why things are the way they are. I guess Disney are leaving it for one of the many spin offs.
As a film , I think once all the fan boys are given a few weeks to digest it all, I think we're left with an average action film and a poor Star Wars film. No midnight showing for me next time.

One of the most important aspects of story telling is to show and not tell. I'm disappointed for you, hope you enjoy the next one much more!

Went to see it last night and personally LOVED it. Took me back to my childhood more than any of the prequels did.

Some miserable bastards on here, some people chase nostalgia too much and will never be happy. Same old attitude when people would say 'football was better in my day' etc etc...
Thought the film was lots of fun, far better then the prequels and had so many homages to the originals even as subtly as the way they cut from one scene to the next. Acting was incredible from the ex-stormtrooper character too and thought the baddy was excellent in terms of the fact he seemed very much like an angsty teenager not being able to control his mood etc and being destructive.
5* reviews online were a tad generous perhaps but it can't be far off!

I was at the midnight show on Weds, maybe a little tired and disorientated.
Not that I didn't enjoy it first time, but I will give it another viewing at Imax 3d in Brum on Sunday evening, and I think I will enjoy it even more.

If they revealed every single bit of information in one movie of a trilogy what would there be in the other two movies? Just like A New Hope the main bits were fleshed out and then expanded upon in ESB and concluded in ROTJ. No one can really judge Snoke yet as we have only seen him through a hologram and the Emperor didn't exactly look intimidating in a hologram but he was great in ROTJ.
Ren is an interesting character I like how he isn't fully in tune with the force in this movie like Darth Vader was in ANH. The internal struggle he had leading up to the last 30 minutes of the movie (trying to avoid spoilers) helped push his character further on if you ask me. When he fights Rey and she tears him a new one because he's so angsty, ego driven and scared of being shit compared to Vader I think he will sink deeper into the dark side and become more ruthless in Ep 8.
Personally I felt it set the next movie up quite well. It wasn't perfect but no movie is and considering the pressure of the franchise they pulled off a spectacular movie and I would rank it 3rd on the list of Star Wars movies.

Also liked how when he was reading Rey's mind he saw the islands that she ends up on at the end of the movie helps you understand why he was so concerned in that scene probably sees how powerful she will become.

Been to se it at Imax today and thought it was fecking brilliant. You can all discuss the nostalgias and be nerdy pedantic over it but for me the story, humour, new characters, the attention to detail and cinematography were outstanding and I loved every minute of it. The fighter scene when Rey first flew the Falcon was amazing. The only thing that scared me was Carrie Fishers' over botoxed face and it's lack of movement!

Rey is stronger with the force than Ren even without the training Ren went through. Luke is the stronger with the force than Leia, Ren and Rey could be twins but what if the last scene was a reunion of father and daughter. Yes it was rushed in places but so what, it was a pretty good effort as the first film in a new trilogy and set up perfectly for episode 8.

Second viewing in 3d imax - gorgeous looking film. Was definitely worth a second look and really worth a quality sound and visual presentation. (Someone tell us how good the new Cineworld is).
One of my favourite scenes is the one with Rey sliding down the dunes - no CGI - just beautiful cinematography and silent character exposition.
Current ranking:
1. Empire 2. Star Wars 3. Jedi 4. Force Awakens 5. Sith 6. Menace 7. Clones

It's never really going to beat that first time you see the Star Destroyer chasing Leia's ship, but people saying this film is "terrible" are completely off the mark, it's far better than any of the prequels, Revenge of The Sith included (that's a film that only steps up after Order 66). The appointment of JJ Abrams as director has got rid of crap dialogue such as "From my point of view the Jedi are Evil!" and cleaned up the film into a modern hit. Kids will absolutely love it, there's great new characters and the old cast return for the veterans.
Well done Disney, I'm amazed to say, they've breathed new life into the series in my opinion.

1. Empire Strikes Back 2. A New Hope 3. The Force Awakens 4. Revenge of the Sith 5. Return of the Jedi 6. The Phantom Menace 7. Attack of the Clones Surprised Jedi is that far down? But each to their own. For me it's 1) Return of the Jedi (an hr long space battle & endor battle plus first Star Wars film seen on the big screen) 2) The Empire Strikes Back 3) The Force Awakens 4) A New Hope (probably equal to TFA) 5) Revenge of the Sith 6) The Phantom Menace 7) Attack of the Clones (the ewoks films are better than this)

Finn's fair handy with the lightsaber for a newbie in that fight scene wonder if they will buck the trend and he will also become a jedi, would be interesting

Was never fussed with the originals or the sequels. Thought the three prequels were pants. So I was surprised I enjoyed this film so much. I even felt nostalgic for stuff I didn't realise I was nostalgic for!
A bloody good action film.

Went to see it for the second time. Absolutely loved it first time but strangely I enjoyed it even more second time around to be honest. Noticed lots of things I missed first time round and it felt less rushed on second viewing. Did anyone else notice obi-wan and yoda's voices when Rey was having her mental force induced vision thing? Brilliant!
