Hales opening with Ali, we could have won today. It's not that cost us the win today ........very poor bowling from us including 17 wides Is what caused us to lose .....we gave up to 40 runs too many away in the field today.

If Gurney and Woakes are the answer then I'm not sure what the question is to be fair?

If Gurney and Woakes are the answer then I'm not sure what the question is to be fair? The question is; why will England fail to make an impact in the World Cup. To which there are multiple answers including the two you've already given!

Why didn't Bopara bowl 10 overs? You have to take the pace off the ball in sub-continental conditions and mix things up a bit. That's why we failed to chase down the total in the end, they brought their spinners on at the right time and players like Stokes couldn't get it off the square. It was an improved performance, replace Gurney and Woakes with Anderson and Broad, and Hales for Cook (sorry Bish) and in fairness that starting XI would be about as good as it gets for the World Cup....

Your opinion mate and you are entitled to it of course ......I would perhaps suggest that Morgan's place could be under thread ,whereas some people would advocate him taking on the captaincy should Cook be replaced , I would ask when he last scored runs regularly at this level, not for some little time ....Taylor would seem to me be pushing him for his place in the side

Still think Moeen and Hales would be a good opening combo, Moeen could actually player the anchor role if he needed to as well as being able to force the pace that's why he's should a good option to have. Taylor desereves a chance based on his form, I always have a nagging feeling he won't make the step up though for some reason. I'd go for Vince personally...

Taylor played some powerful innings in domestic cricket this last summer , Vince seems to have dropped down the Pecking order recently , he once seemed a very good prospect just a couple of years ago

The lad from Surrey seems that he may be worth a look at shortly , Jason Roy I think his name is ?. Yep, T20 definitely his speciality but if he has a few good knocks wouldn't be surprised to see him in the 50 over shake up. I'll be honest I've not seen much of him

1) Why isn't Broad playing? 2) Why isn't there more scrutiny over Eoin Morgan? He's been dreadful these past 18 months. 3) Ravi rocks!

Broad has been injured Bayern , he is recovering from surgery on his right knee , problems with tendons , it's been a long term problem he's suffered from ...but points 2 and 3 and sound. Ravi must be pretty much our top one dayer. Eoin has been dreadful for a long time. He had lots in the bank - but it's running pretty low now. If the selectors are thinking like me - then he's got 2 or 3 games and then he's history - Taylor coming in. I like Eoin - especially how he turned his back on the IPL so that he had a chance to get a test birth, but he needs runs.

England have a major problem in that their three senior batsmen are not contributing enough albeit for different reasons;
Captain Cook looks all at sea. Form is poor, but more than that his natural game is not suited to opening the innings in modern ODI games. I have no doubt he knows that and intends to develop his game but it doesn't come naturally which I think is contributing to his uncertainty.
Bell has become Mr Cameo. Plays sublime inconsequential knocks. Glides effortlessly to 30 odd, then glides an effortless catch to slip or some other soft dismissal.
Morgan has taken over from Pietersen as the 10% man ie plays a good innings one time in ten.
Hard to be successful when your three main men are constantly letting you down.
I know the adage you don't win trophys with boys, but we ain't going to win much with these three in the side. Maybe better going forward with none of them?
I do appreciate that the focus on the batting takes attention of the bowling and fielding which also weren't up to scratch yesterday. But the bowling attack yesterday is some way off our first choice, whereas the batting line up is, I think, our selectors preferred order. So yesterday was a good test of our batting which with a couple of honourable exceptions we failed.
Let's see what happens next - but I'm not optimistic. I can see a heavy defeat in this series; I doubt a whitewash but 6-1 wouldn't surprise me. That said, we start again (tomorrow?). Who knows. I always have hope!

But worth reflecting he was desperately poor in international cricket for some time before being, correctly, dropped. Since when he's played county cricket and seems to have got things sorted because the new Ravi is delivering consistently with bat and ball. He's maybe the right person to captain the ODI team! There's a rather obvious lesson here; if players fail to deliver, bring someone else in. I'm not advocating chopping and changing every game; consistency of selection is important. But don't overdo it!

Ravi Bopara is a very talented cricketer , I had high hopes of him for Test Cricket a year or two back but he never seemed able to push on after those centuries in the West Indies , possibly he suffered from a lack of confidence I don't know , but he seems to have put any problems he had behind him , certainly as far as the one day game is concerned , perhaps there will be another opportunity around the corner for him at the highest form he is still young enough .

Very medium , good length he could bowl a big outs winger , Alan Knott always used to stand up to him making the batsman bat within the crease a marvelous cricketer who was about 37 or 38 years of age before he even made his debut .

But he's sadly remembered for (rightly) ending cricket's association with Apartheid. The cricket establishment needed something to force them into it - but the stand should have been taken much sooner.

I don't think he neccessarily ended it mate but his selection for Englands proposed tour of South Africa in 1968 ( which culminated in the infamous " D'Oliveira Affair " was certainly a catalyst to it , it played a big part in South Africa's twenty odd year Isolation from Test Cricket , which was a great pity because they had a terrific team at the time , but obviously neccessary .

Yes Mike Procter would without a doubt have been up there amongst the great Test Match all rounders ,he only played in seven tests, similarly Barry Richards a marvelous batsman only played in four ....what a talented side that was , Graeme and Peter Pollock , Eddie Barlow , Dennis Lindsay and Colin Band.....Bland was a truly marvelous cover fielder who could be almost guaranteed to hit the stumps with a throw from any angle . Yes it was a great shame that politics denied that team from fulfilling its potential.

But the bigger shame of course was the black population being denied the potential to fulfil their potential in all aspects of life, including cricket!
