He hasn't got a defensive brain. It's been there to see for the past 12 months. In his defence he's not really a Centre Half though. He might me more of one than, say, N'Zonzi, but if N'Zonzi had to play emergency CH for a few weeks he'd be getting torn a new one too. It's a failure of the Management team to we have played a significant amount of games over the last two seasons with a makeshift CH. I don't dislike Wilson, but he's no CH; he's not really shown that he can play Centre Mid either, though at Left Back he did a half-decent job. He doesn't seem alert enough, makes bad decisions aplenty, and is getting exposed on too regular a basis now. Compare how many goals we've conceded this season, where you look at them and say 'that's poor by Wilson', and then see how many Ryan has been culpable for in comparison. You may be right but as an emergency, which we are rapidly approaching, N'zonzi would be a good alternative at centre half, even if only to enable us to keep some "legs" in midfield with Whelan missing. As far as possible, I would keep Cameron away from both right back and centre half positions, particularly whilst Whelan is out.

Wilson will have to play because at the moment we have not got an outstanding replacement, Muni has done well, Geoff could do a job but he will have to play right back against West Ham, Jonny Tex will need time to develop. For me we need a new CB in January as a priority. As you say, Muniesa has done well. On that basis Muniesa should play. I agree that a new centre half is an absolute priority in the January window, as it should have been in the Summer window, if concerns about Huth's availability were around at that time. There is simply too much pressure on Shawcross and Begovic to carry our back 4 at the moment and given that we are trying to be more offensive in our approach to the games, that back 4 has to be rock solid. To be fair I was going to say Muni but I bottled it

Would any of you realistically drop him tomorrow? Coming up against an in-form West Ham. It could have disaster written all over it. If Huth was genuinely fit, I'd play him, but clearly Hughes just isn't seeing it and I trust his judgement on that. Absolutely I would. Against an in-form West Ham, leaving Wilson to deal with one of their red hot forwards is more of a recipe for disaster than drafting in an alternative. I thought Huth was injured again anyway so unavailable for selection regardless. I would consider placing Cameron there however I genuinely feel Geoff should play in midfield. West Ham's style of play will play into his hands.

Keep him in midfield as I've alluded to elsewhere even if that means having Wilson at right back on Saturday.

He's a left back for me, I don't like him anywhere else.

I'd only ever heard of him as a result of one game where he played as a "makeshift" CB for Portsmouth the season they dropped. In that game he'd had an absolute mare and was responsible for several goals. Hanson tore him a new one so bad was he on the day.

JSU said he was being signed as a central midfielder (which he was). And we had a Portsmouth who worshipped the ground Wilson walked on saying he had been playing a lot at centre half but he was indeed a central midfielder.

Shawcross was about a mile away from the guy crossing the ball in. Okay, not toe to toe with him but certainly bearing down on him. The guy was never going to shoot from that angle so the only thing to do was cross. Marc should have read that and if anything, seeing where his man was, cut the angle out for the cross. He did neither and yet again was caught in two minds. Don't get me wrong there were other guilty parties in the build up to it but I'm just saying this is another example of Marc's slowness in reading the game. Not a top half CB by any stretch. The cross shouldn't have got in in the first place, N'Zonzi and Shawcross messed up for it, there wasn't much Wilson can do, he was in the right place and was unfortunate the ball was just beyond his reach.

I'm no fan of Marc Wilson. I've always thought he was utter shit as a defender, but was decent as a defensive midfielder. With Huth out, and looking completely fucked, he's been our 1st choice CB to partner Shawcross. But why? Muniesa played CB in his Barça(B) days, but no, we've stuck with that crock of shite, who has been at fault for numerous goals we've conceded this season, and following his tragic display in the cup against So'ton, is it finally time that we drop him, and maybe give Muniesa or a changed Huth the spot, but either way, in January, we need a replacement who is at a near mirror image of Shawcross.

For whom? There's nobody else. N'Zonzi? Mama on a free? Neil Ruddock, in a Neville Southall type affair? Three at the back and all round chaos?

But it might be worth trying out in a cup game when it next rolls round.

I won't dispute your opinions of his defensive capabilities, the fact is he is 10 times better, somewhere in the back 4 than he is anywhere in midfield.

Blaming Wilson for every goal we concede is frankly pathetic. Whether he is Prem quality in that position is debatable.

I never said that Wilson is to play for every goal, he is at fault for a number of them, but not all of them. And in my eyes, he is the worst regular 1st team CB in the Prem, nowhere near Prem quality, about Watford level. I still stand by my statement he is wank.

If every defender in the squad was fit then giving Wilson a rest would be no bad thing. But with Bardsley, Huth, Muniesa (and Teixeira?) all injured, dropping Wilson makes no sense whatsoever.
I's also disagree with the op's claim that Wilson was a decent defensive midfielder. He had a couple of shocking games there for Stoke (one great through ball but then got dispossessed with monotonous regularity) until Pulis sensibly tried him out at full back, where having to watch your back is much less of a problem.

This Wilson thing really annoys me. The bloke is asked/told to do a job as a centre half by the manager. He is hardly likely to turn around and say 'nah, you are all right boss, I need to play somewhere else or take a rest'.
The Wilson bashers need to look further up the tree if they have issues with him, given the lack of any half decent replacements right now
