This West ham / saints debate on a stoke forum is a bit pathetic, but speaking of saints and West ham, I have heard a lot of spoke fans saying that saints fans are arrogant and deluded. I would say in response that before today, man city were directly above us and West ham were directly below us. Most saints fans I know wanted man city to win to keep West ham further away from us because we know we will finish below man city. That is realism not delusion.

With Tony Pulis not in charge any longer and Peter Coates not exactly splashing the cash last season 'no doubt banked a wedge or two' and not exactly splashing the cash in the close season just gone 'no doubt will be banking a wedge or two' at the end of this season I'll be hoping Peter will splash the cash. Before the start of the season it was my thinking that the Coates family will try do the things on the cheap by spending the odd million here and the odd million there whilst banking millions upon millions and if we stay in the premier league for another season after this then that'll be even more money. Lack of expenditure will catch up with us in the end and I can see Hughes walking. What can one say ....

Nah, not at all. They played great and we played crap. I'm not a sore loser. Why would I be? We've beaten you 9 times out of the last 14, you have beat us 3 times... We beat you twice last season. I recall Ricardo Fuller leaving your entire defence on its arse a couple of year back. That's 3 times we have beaten you. FA Cup quarter-final...? I also recall a James Beattie brace when Fuller left Upson for dead on another occasion. That is 5 just off the top of my head. I misread, I thought he was a Southampton fan.

1) Southampton have one of the best youth academies in the country. They produced the likes of Bale, Walcott, Shaw etc. We have invested in our academy, but it will take a while before we see the benefits in our first team and on our balance sheet. 2) Southampton have spent big. People on here bang on about what we spent on Dave Kitson. Today Southampton had on their bench a guy who cost more than our record signing. How much did they spend in their first two years in the Premier League? I reckon easily double what we spent in that same period. 3) Good investment strategy, scouting etc. As far as I'm aware, our scouting network was pretty crap in comparison, and our transfer strategy under Pulis was not sustainable in the long run. Bigger picture though... we are in a great position right now. If you look at most clubs of a similar size, we are doing quite well. We could just as easily ask why can't we be as bad as Birmingham? Why can't we be as bad as Wolves? Apart from Southampton, I can't really think of any club, similar in size to Stoke, that are better than us right now. I can think of a long list who are far, far worse off. With the changes Coates has introduced in the last two years, hopefully we can reach a similar level to Southampton, but until then we might as well enjoy being a decent premier league side, the pride of the Midlands, rather than beating ourselves up because one club happens to be ahead of us. This. In spades. I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure I heard on Radio Solent after the game that they're now 2nd in the league, have garnered 18 of the last 21 points available to them and have only conceded one goal at home all season. They've also only conceded 5 goals in total this season. I don't think that was a particularly comfortable win for them yesterday from the talk on that station, and yet we looked 'pedestrian' Maybe they're a bit spoilt having watched their team stick 8 past Sunderland last week? We didn't look pedestrian in the 2nd half imo, I missed most of the first half becaause of traffic and a ticket/steward issue but I was told their goal 'had been coming', who'd of thunk it given the stats above. Having said all that, maybe we've had our season of fun and we should go back to the old away days of watching the other team play football while we packed the penalty area ten years of Pulis stifling the youth policy is obviously too much to come back from, may as well bring him back and start hoofing it again Why can't we be like Barcelona is what I want to know.

Southampton sold a good few, and made a mint. That's a fact. They also spent £60m to replace those players, and I would say judging on what we are seeing so far, have brought in better players, plus a quality Manager. We spent £3.4 and were bottom of the spending league table. Losing 1 0 to one of the form teams in the division at their place should be no surprise or a disaster.

Southampton have had a brilliant start to the season and deserve their success which has been built up over a long period of time. Koeman has done a fantastic job getting a bunch of new players to play so well so soon.
I don't think they will finish second though. So far they have adopted an attacking policy which has helped their defence. They have played few "big" clubs, and those they have, they have lost to (Liverpool and Spurs). I think when they are put under pressure by good teams they may wilt and not look so great.
I think they will end in the top ten, and be like Spurs; good at putting away weaker teams but lose to top teams.
Time will tell.
