Looks like a pen to me.
The Sky commentary team thought the first was a definite penalty then spent the rest of the match going on about how strong Bony is - so how the hell do end up on the ground?
Bony had hold of Ryan. Ryan had hold of Bony. Williams stuck a leg out to trip Ryan. Bony thru himself onto the ground.
Incredibly generous.
Ian Wright on 606 thought the first was a pen but said MH will have right to be angry if refs don't continue to apply this interpretation of the law: (1) Why should we be the ones to suffer as this law is implemented. (2) It won't be applied in future weeks will it.
So on the basis of last night's game where the same grappling went unpunished - Sunday was the implementation of a rule specific for us. It certainly looks that way, doesn't it? What appears to have happened is that because Ryan has been highlighted in the media as one of the main culprits, the FA have probably had a word to their poster boy/ bright, young thing referee, Mr Oliver to try and show the footballing world that they are on the ball so to speak. Ryan duly obliged by getting in a situation with Bony (which was pretty much 6 of one, half a dozen of the other) but with the words of his employers in his head, Oliver couldn't wait to point to the spot. The fact that it was totally ignored in last night's match speaks volumes.
