I remember him coming on as sub against Castle Town as centre half years ago- usual pre-season friendly with loads of academy lads taking to the field. Although it was only a kickabout you could tell that he was head and shoulders above the other kids in terms of ability. I wasn't surprised at all when he started to move up the ranks and eventually broke into the team. It's a shame that people wrote him off just because he looked absolutely wank as a right winger. He never go a fair deal after that from the crowd, but I think he'll do pretty well in the Championship if given a run of games at centre-back. That is probably his level, but it's a shame that he's leaving his home town club with many people thinking that he's some sort of joke figure, when he's actually a pretty decent defender. I suppose he's got TP to thank for that. Yes I remember that game 2005 I think came on as a sub, think it may have been Boskamp manager at the time, he was fuckin awful at CH, looked well out of his depth Wilko or Dicko covering him twice no positional sense dragged out wide by part timers, lucky boy in my opinion if he had not been local would he have had the opportunities he has had at Stoke ? What absolute garbage. How many other lads from that youth team are playing professional football now? Maybe one or two? Shotton was obviously impressive enough during his time here to get a professional contract, and how many other local lads do that? Hardly any. Being local has gone against him in my opinion- it's actually used as a stick to beat him with. That and whatever nonsense goes on up Hanley. Shotton's not a world beater- of couse he isn't- but some people made their minds up about him based on seeing him play a few initial games out of position, or the fact that he didn't want to pretend to be their mate on a drunken night out, and that was that...he never got a fair crack of the whip. Shame really. He had rave reviews on loan all the way through the football league from League Two to the Championship so more than deserved a chance here.

Why is that garbage ?, it is my opinion on what I saw that day, he looked out of his depth against part time players and was pulled out of position far to easily, being local certainly gave him an advantage in gaining a contract due to academy rankings for the club. As for what went on whilst he was out on the town with his mates, well some people on here will be able to testify to his general behaviour, as for rave reviews where are they ?, he did not exactly set the world on fire at Wigan did he.

Good Luck with it Ryan, he played well at RB the season before last, the goal in Split and away at WBA were decent ones to chip in with.

I'm not going to continue an argument about the ins and outs a friendly match that happened nine years ago. I think the fact that Shotton has since played in the Premiership and Europa League says everything about the accuracy of your assessment of him that day. That's all there is to say really. Shame that people are so keen to put the boot into one of own, but there you go.

Hardly putting the boot in is it, still waiting for the rave reviews ?, in my opinion and I have been watching Ryan since he was at the academy, he would not have played in the Prem. or Europa league for any other established Prem. side other than Stoke, Pulis rated him allegedly but not as a CB which says everything when that is his favoured position.

Oh yes, hang on..I'll just trawl back through six year's worth of posts on the Tranmere Rovers website.... I don't disagree with what you've written above. I just felt the tone of your original reply was a bit unnecessary. Anyway, it looks like we won't be seeing him again in the red'n'white, so we can find something else to argue about...

Thought he was decent. Not the worst I've seen in a Stoke shirt by a long stretch.

I've got a lot of time for Shotton, did a decent job at RB but was hung out to dry by TP when he played him on the wing. Good luck to him at Derby, he's easily good enough to be a regular in the Championship and I'm sure he'll do well.

Why didn't Hughes give him more of a chance at full back?
Is Bardsley really that much better? Would Bardsleys wages have been better spent elsewhere?

I always thought Pulis rated him most for his long throw ability. The footballing bit was secondary. Sadly, his long throws didn't turn out to be as effective as Rory's.

I think he was more worthy of a contract extension than Wilko as much as I love Wilko's attitude .I am another of the opinion that Shotton played well the season before last and deserved another chance especially as the jury is still out re; Bardsley as far as I'm concerned.

What's wrong with Barnsley? OK, it isn't Stoke but of all the towns in England it seems odd to single Barnsley out!

Think he got a lot of unfair stick because some had him down as a bit of a cocksure lad with a superstar attitude. Whenever I met him he's been a sound lad and he's come through the academy where many others have failed.
Had a couple of decent spells in the team but was clearly never, ever, ever a right winger and with a good run at Derby, he'll hopefully get a bit of confidence back. I don't think he has the ball control to play at right back but his height and pace should see him to well at centre back at that level.
Nowhere near as bad as some fans made out and still young enough to make a decent fist of his career.

I thought it might have been some kind of STD cream.

Did his contract expire? / Did we get anything out of this deal? If you on about Shotton he signed to derby for £500k on a 3 year deal, but clubs put it through as a loan as they missed the 12pm deadline for him to play last night. The perm deal will be confirmed shortly

He'll be much better for Derby, it might be the making of him.
Remember him scoring for us against the Baggies? Thanks Shotts.

Good luck Ryan.
Sadly judged by many when played on the wing.
At least he'll get away from the hate that many have sent his way - mainly it seems because some are jealous of a local lad finding a modicum of success with his own football club. Shame really.

As Rory coaches at Derby, might not Shotton get one on one to develop "The Throw"?
Shotts could be the next Rory if Derby use the training tools they have at their disposal?
Good Luck Ryan!
