Just a bit before my time really, I saw him for 2 seasons but I was a kid Same here. Only saw him play a handful of times and was too young to appreciate what was going on, but my dad always said that when Dobing played well, Stoke played well. Sorry, that's all I've got. |

Aaah Peter Dobing.
Very talented player - quick feet, good shot, very good header of the ball if there was a goal in prospect. Not really interested in tracking back. I suppose if you could have combined Waters' attitude and fitness with Dobing's talent and brain you'd have had a hell of an inside right.
Fair haired, as was virtually half of the team then - Palmer, Bernard, Eastham - Harry Burrows and Maurice Setters even.
Very placid off the pitch - smoked a pipe, loved fishing, spot of gardening in his nice house on the Westlands, but had a vile temper on the pitch when roused. For a time he had the record for the longest suspension after a sending off.
My mate really loved to watch him; I always liked Harry Burrows and big John better, but there's no doubt that he was a good player. If he could have been arsed he might have got a few caps, though if he could have been arsed Man City wouldn't have sold him I suppose.
My favourite memory of him was a cold afternoon at Villa Park. It was midwinter, dark by 4 and the floodlights were on. Five minutes to go and the police were walking around the outside of the pitch. The ball came over from our right wing. Peter caught it really sweetly on the volley, flush on his instep. It must have been going at 70 miles an hour. It missed the goal by three feet, but caught a copper right on the side of the head, right on the ear. Better than a goal. I remember the copper was furious and wagged his finger at Dobing, who had to try really hard not to laugh.

I seem to remember him having bags of ability when he felt like using it. He did frustrate the crowd at times with his attitude, and idle ways . However if my memory serves me correctly Wado made him the captain, which was a masterstroke, and transformed him into the king of the Boothen end. It was just a pity injury forced him to retire when he was performing at his best. This of course could be utter tripe and a figment of that thing on top of me neck !!!

Great player. Fairly quick with the ball, scored quite a few goals. Was purchased from Manchester City if my memory is correct. Remember once Stoke at West Ham, 3 - 0 down at half time. Second half big come back, ended up 3-3 or 4-3 to Stoke with Dobing scoring a couple. Definitely one of Waddingtons greats.

Nothing much changed in 40 years........really good player and could be brilliant on his day. As mentioned he used to take stick especially sometimes from the paddocks but gave it back!!!!!!

Too young to see him myself but heard loads of stories from my old man.
He always used to tell me that he came off the pitch with his shorts cleaner than when he went on but was a wonderful footballer with a quick brain, often too quick for those around him.
Usef to say that a lot of the supporters hated him for his lack of commitment but that spoke volumes about them.
Strangely this topic came back up last season when Marko was getting stick...

I started following Stoke in 1970 so my memory is clouded. But if what you say is true it's strange that he should be captain Or was Denis smith captain ?? Anyway he's a bit of a recluse now apparently. |

To the right of Huth is Frank Soo. Steele is probably the best striker ever to play for Stoke. He won England caps and has scored a hat trick for England. Had WW2 not come along when it did, he would proably have won far more caps than he did - the war years were when he would have been at his peak for club and country. Frank Soo was, I think, the first ethnic Chinese to play in England although he was born in Lancashire. He was another player who would probably have played for England had it not been for WW2. Both of them are well worth a Google. |

Apparently he used to tell one of the club staff to have his pipe lit and ready for him when he came off the pitch at half time!  I wonder if he would have switched to "vaping" had he been playing these days? He'd have been an advertiser's dream if he endorsed their product. |

Classy player. Could take a ball down well, beat a man, shield a ball, make great passes, and scored quite a few very good goals, in fact a good all rounder. Could be a bit naughty if he was clobbered, but retaliated with class too.No doubt about it, he was also a 'hard man.'.Never seemed to make much effort during a game, but contributed a lot. Well known for coming off the pitch at the end of a game looking immaculate, regardless of the pitch conditions.

For 10 minutes of a match he was superb and would get a goal or a couple,but ambled around for the other 80 as if he was was watching like the rest of us.

Dobing was a superb and skilful player. Captained the 1972 league cup winning team.
A ball playing midfielder
Always gave Jackie Charlton the runaround, I think he once scored a hat trick when Waddo played him at centre forward against Leeds.
The sort of player who if new he could not catch a ball would not bother to chase it.
In those days the Butler St Stand supporter had to have a boo boy, Dobing was it because he would not chase a lost cause.
Calvin Palmer became it after Dobing left.
In the Boothen end we thought he was brilliant.

We always used to reckon that,if in the first few minutes of any match he played a decent pass or two, he would go on to have a great game but, if he gave the ball away a couple of times, he might as well be subbed. Luckily he had many more great games than bad and was a real hero.

was a good player very elegant on the ball , used to frustrate a lot of people the way he strolled around and sometimes got caught ball watching . did leave his foot in sometimes

A very decent player, not world class, but good enough to play in the top tier and won trophies with his previous club. Smokes a pipe in and out of the shower it would seem. |

Both of them are well worth a Google. Quite right LP - pity that Soo's wartime appearances for England 'don't count' - I suspect that they counted as far as he was concerned. As for 'Nobby', even Tommy Lawton wrote that it was Steele's ability that ensured he never took his England place for granted. Always been one of my regrets that TV/video wasn't around when these greats (inc Franklin) were playing and that today's generation have to rely on the word of those of us of 'advanced years'!!  |
