I remember him being brilliant in our first game after promotion.I think it was against Spurs, he scored and was pure class. Then as already posted his shirt was always clean and he rarely got stuck in. Also remember screaming shift your arse out of the way Dobing as George Eastham hit the ball toward goal in the 72 final. AHH happy memories

A class player. Both Dobing and Eastham had an eye for the killer ball, unlike Eastham though Dobing could look after himself in a time when opposing midfielders and defenders got away with murder.
My abiding memory of Dobing is the hat-trick he scored v Leeds, it was a night match (the best games for me as a kid were always under floodlights at the Vic), Stoke desperately needed the points to stay up, Leeds were going for top spot. I seem to remember Dobing destroyed them single-handedly. I can still see the third going in past Sprake's despairing, out-stretched hand, the whole ground going mental.
Dobing would certainly be in my top 20 players of the past 50 years during which I've watched those Rip Roaring Potters.

He had a cracking shot on him, too. The goal at Old Twatford in League Cup semi-final against West Ham stays long in the memory, I chucked half a cup of Bovril in the air, sorry if you were the recipient. My Dad (who liked a classy inside forward) always told me his brain was too quick for the rest of the forward line, a comment I still struggle to get my head round. Yes, he was an elegant player but he would also leave a boot in, he got a terrible broken leg (at Ipswich?) and then got a 6 or 7 game suspension afterward.
And the paddock didn't wait until expressing their disapproval, God knows what this board would think of him.
However, he lifted the League Cup for us, so thanks, Peter!

Dobing also had a nasty streak when he got riled.
I remember him getting sent off in an Anglo Italian game at the Vic.
It might have been against Roma. The eyeties were at their usual pinching and spitting best when the next thing I see is Dobing literally stamping all over one of them.

Dobing turned out for Denis Smith's testimonial and strolled round playing like he'd not retired. We did joke that he was playing with his pipe in but, as ever, he was playing with his head up seeing everything; controlling the ball with one touch and laying it off with the other. Perhaps the ball did a bit more work in that game but we appreciated what we were missing with him having retired.

I seem to remember him having bags of ability when he felt like using it. He did frustrate the crowd at times with his attitude, and idle ways . However if my memory serves me correctly Wado made him the captain, which was a masterstroke, and transformed him into the king of the Boothen end. It was just a pity injury forced him to retire when he was performing at his best. This of course could be utter tripe and a figment of that thing on top of me neck !!! Exactly right. He was ex ManC and played for England u23s. Scored some tremendous goals for Stoke and played some stinkers. His goals with Harry Burrows kept Stoke in the 1st Division till the team was strengthened. Remember him losing it one match when he pulled out of making an attempt to get to a ball and was groaned at by the Boothen End. he proceeded to flash a "V" at them/us and "lost it" in terms of his popularity.

thanks for the info, you older people, like I said, I watched him play when I was about 11 or 12, but I don't think you know how good players are at that age, although at the time I remember how brilliant Greenhoff looked

At his best Dobing would have graced any PL team even now he was that good IMO. He also had a good throw on him, not in Rory's league but still very effective. As an aside there used to be a poster on here with the brilliant name of "Peterdobingspipeā.... Whatever happened to him I wonder. Up there with "Alanbloorstackle".

Always struck me as a cardigan, pipe and slippers man, sat back in his chair reading the paper. But most weeks he wasn't as dynamic as that.

He was a very naturally gifted player with great vision, and an explosive shot. He scored a lot of goals from midfield. Long throw in too, which often caused havoc if Big John got on the end of it. He could be fairly static for long periods of the match, and this frustrated fans, but he had a decent turn of pace when was in the mood. He could be a tough tackler too. Think he got sent off a couple of times at Stoke.
I will always remember him post match though having a pint in the social club mixing with the fans and smoking his pipe. He hardly ever had it out of his mouth. He was fairly quiet chap but seemed to enjoy the company of fans after the game
Crikey, how times have changed.

Staffs Villa is right over the pay dispute, Dobing in a fit of pique asked for his cards and Waddo gave them to him, but the dispute did not last very long

Dobing was a superb and skilful player. Captained the 1972 league cup winning team. A ball playing midfielder Always gave Jackie Charlton the runaround, I think he once scored a hat trick when Waddo played him at centre forward against Leeds. The sort of player who if new he could not catch a ball would not bother to chase it. In those days the Butler St Stand supporter had to have a boo boy, Dobing was it because he would not chase a lost cause. Calvin Palmer became it after Dobing left. In the Boothen end we thought he was brilliant. I think you will find that Calvin Palmer had left long before Doing . Peter was certainly the "Marmite" player of that era . Would never chase a lost cause, some called that lazy .I called it intelligence.

Yes I agree Dobing was a Marmite player. My old Dad loved him and told me constantly he was a ' very intelligent player 'which I never really thought was that important!! I never appreciated his contribution to the team and I just worshipped Terry Conroy .

Definitely a player of two halves - quick incisive and had a good shot.
Otherwise as my old man said he was the best player he knew who could hide on a football field. Hence the clean shorts and shirt.
He pissed me off when he spent his page on the special edition sentinel programme discussing his career at Man city - had he played in a final with them?
Otherwise right to be annoyed with Stoke over his testimonial.
Pipe man of the year - and seemingly very image conscious.
I assume he was married (cough cough)

Indeed he was married! (to Judith I think) He was also one of the classiest players I have seen play for Stoke. His hat trick against high flying Leeds was probably the best individual performance I have ever seen by a Stoke player

Fine player. My favourite Stoke player at the time.
I remember his hat trick against Leeds Utd and I think he was top goalscorer that season with about 19/20 goals.
Need someone to score the same amount now.

Can anyone else remember when Stoke were losing 3 - 0 at half-time to West Ham (away) and Stoke came back in the second half to win 4 - 0 with 2 goals each from Dobing and Burrows, if I remember correctly?
The following match we were at Wolves and the game was nearly the reverse with Stoke thrashing Wolves in the first half and them coming back in the second, but I don't remember the final score.

Wasnt the final score 4-3 for Stoke against Wolves away? The West ham game I remember seeing I think on ITV.

There's a brilliant pic kicking about somewhere (I used to have it but nowe can't find it), of Peter about to launch into an Italian defender during that Anglo-Italian cup match against Roma. Keeper lying on the floor clutching the ball looking like he's screaming in agony ... Very much keeps himself to himself these days though. I wish it weren't so but i'm not sure he thinks much of the club these days, for reasons that go back a long time.

My favourite player in his day and one of the best players ever to turn out for Stoke - he was good enough to play for any Division 1 team of the time. He was one of those players that always gave you hope and expectation when he was on the ball, didn't play a simple pass when a difficult one was an option. He scored a lot of goals for Stoke , often "good 'uns" as well.

He could be good when he wanted, don't think he ever got his shorts dirty no matter how muddy it was. He was having a great season (can't remember the year) then he broke his leg and never seemed the same again. He had a potbank in longton when he finished playing but spent a lot of time fishing in southern Ireland.
