I saw him plenty. Good player who always stayed on his feet & came off the pitch as clean as he went on. Scored a fair few goals. He was a first team stalwart & played alongside 'Gentleman George' who told him to get the 'f' out of the way, just before slotting the winner against Chelsea in 1972. ps - I'm young at heart ...

Can anyone else remember when Stoke were losing 3 - 0 at half-time to West Ham (away) and Stoke came back in the second half to win 4 - 0 The mighty potters have supernatural talents

Peter's sister-in-law, Gina, worked with me in Crewe in the 1970's for (what was then called) the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food. She was married to Peter's brother who was a goal keeper (non league standard) I think.
Peter always had a bit of a reputation as a recluse even in those days.

Can anyone else remember when Stoke were losing 3 - 0 at half-time to West Ham (away) and Stoke came back in the second half to win 4 - 0 with 2 goals each from Dobing and Burrows, if I remember correctly? The following match we were at Wolves and the game was nearly the reverse with Stoke thrashing Wolves in the first half and them coming back in the second, but I don't remember the final score.

I remember the away win at West Ham well as I was there and if I remember correctly our four goals were scored in little over 8 minutes. It seemed that each time we kicked off we just ran up the pitch and scored. Absolutely unbelievable and was celebrated by several beers afterwards. Regarding Peter Dobing who was always a favourite player of mine, i remember that I bought a ticket for Hull cup game from him. I had travelled to Hull and had hoped to get a ticket there. Walking round the outside of the ground I spotted a group of the Stoke players who looked like they might have some tickets available. I approached Peter Dobing, who was smoking his pipe, and asked if he had any tickets. He produced one and when I asked how much I owed him he just asked for the face value ! Always a gentleman.. I must confess that I still have the ticket as a memento of a great day.
