In the days before Oasis, when Creation Records dealt in Velvet Psychedilecs: Jasmine Minks, The Pastels, Meat Whiplash, The Legend, Bodines, Primal Scream etc... it was worth grooving to Pete Astor.
The Loft, The Weather Prophets, Pete Astor, or Wisdom of Harry.. all worth a look.

Anyone have any recollections of the marvellously monikered Sid Presley Experience? I liked their later incarnation The Godfathers too.

Even the Antipodeans got in on the act with Nick Cave and his various incarnations, The Go-Betweens, and the authors of one of my particular favourite mini lps: 'Raining Pleasure', The Triffids...

Never got exposed to the Chameleons Luke, so I can't really comment.
During the early Eighties Ian McCulloch of the Bunnymen {I saw them at Buxton Opera House secret gig thing 'Shine So Hard'}, did a middle page NME spread citing his influences.. Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, The Stooges, Television, The Doors... etc It became a starting point for my bible of cooool music during the 80's, though little of it was 80's music. It really felt like music was a bit of a melting pot. It get's confuserating what to include as 80's music.
Perhaps the Mozz was quintessentially pale boy Brit indie in t'80's?
Magnificent, perhaps my favourite Smiths track.

Great picks Albert, I thought 'Public Imae been 79 too, it's a great tune so it dunna matter. I was going to offer 'Death Disco', but seeing the King Kurt Live video reminded me of watching this troop.
Banging yr bonce with a tin beer tray was never cool.
Half Man Half Biscuit were great at Shelley's too. King Kurt are touring this autumn, I havn't shouted 'OoooWallawalla' for yonks.

A touch of late 80's widge paint.
Almost 1990, but I'd happily get into a debate about it.

Fantastic band, fast guitar hands. David Gedge's Cinerama are still worth catching live.
