One of my all time heroes, the incomparable Steve Albini and Big Black. Loved this. Has there ever been heavier and more menacing sound? If there is, i've missed it.
The Rapeman album and his work with Shellac is the epitome of a very specific genre of American indie.

Another hero of mine, another American band and another stunning three piece noise machine. Why are three piece bands, like Motorhead, so damed noisy?
It's Bob Mould and Sugar.

I haven't even heard of most of these bands you mention on this thread ... I think if you like "Machine Head" you'll probably like the last few guitar band i've posted up Bish. Ian Paice's drum sound on Machine Head is fantastic too. They mic'd the kit up in the corridor outside the studio - that's why they sound so lively. That's the sound engineer in me coming out. If you're into live sound check out Dave Ratt, for studio Steve Albini is your man. Nothing sounds better than Surfer Rosa by Pixies and he knows the industry inside out. Albini is the main reason that beautiful 24 track analogue tape survives to this day. These guys wrote the book. Apologies for going all geekwanker but certain posters like TD and Cheez, maybe even Gods and RBO may find this interesting. And as you know, like a pizza delivery boy, I am only here to please you guys.

Machine Head was recorded in a derelict Hotel in Montreaux Switzerland , using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio and as you say they set the kit up in the corridors of the Hotel , the album was engineered by Martin Birch , some great and curious sounds were achieved on this album due to the acoustics in the Hotel What's your pizza like ************** ....I'm a fussy eater ?

Good thread.
These were pretty impressive until about 1985 when their heads were turned by the sights and sounds of dollars and stadiums. Shame. Apologies for the quality, best I could find.
And there was still some sublime disposable pop around too. Until the Hit Factory that was SAW came and fucked everything up from about 86 onwards. Tossers.

Agree with that, but I hold Steve Silk Hurly with Jack Your Body, as the antichrist of good music in 1987.

Frank Tovey, Fad Gadget was the synth go to dude for me though. I'm thinking the original Human League 'Being Boiled', Gazza Numan and John Foxx 'Underpants' was late 70's not 80's, but I could be wrong. Didn't Frank Tovey sing 'Luxury' ? I've got that on 12" yellow vinyl somewhere.
