My pleasure mate , I reccomend Heinlein as one of the great Science Fiction authors , old school basic and simple escapist reading ....reading his books are a little bit like watching a classic 50's movie , excellent holiday reading

Not sure if I'd have the patience to read them now. I know what you mean , I have a couple of thousand hard cover books. In a purpose built library , ita a collection built up over 40 years , but I know that I will never read a lot of those books again , purely because reading habits and tastes change over a period of time , but I would not be able to part with any of them , absurd really

I have to go and buy the fuckers back again.

Soviet Andriy Tarkovsky's "Solaris" is up there with Kubrick's "2001" for being the most technically brilliant SF films ever made. I'm also a massive fan of the Spanish Alejandro Amenabar's "Abre Los Ojos" (the original version of the shitefest that was "Vanilla Sky").
The first Alien and the first Terminator are the only ones from their respective series that I can comfortably define as Science Fiction, and they're both damn good films at that. Blade Runner always has to be mentioned as well.
I bloody love Minority Report as well, to be honest.

[qu ote author="@**************" source="/post/4356248/thread" timestamp="1404849344"] Event horizon is a fantastic film. Beat me to it. Event Horizon - super creepy. I also like Sunshine - the Danny Boyle movie. And I really liked the first Star Trek reboot. However, in the second one, Khan was brilliantly played by whatshisname. Wonderful acting. [/quote] Sunshine was an awkward one I thought, because I felt the cabin fever element was brilliant, and it's exploration of man's ability to cope under the appropriate stressed to the plot was extremely thoughtful and handled very well. Until it became explicitly obvious that there was an actual, shit, monster on board.

It ticks all the boxes for a Sci-Fi flick, yet somehow most of us tend to put it in the, usually empty, 'artsy' storage of our our brains. I consider it Sci-Fi personally, so I guess I'm just trying to feel cultural and shit with still arguing over it and whatnot.

Clockwork Orange is an awkward one, there's definitely sci-fi elements too it but it's too much of a social commentary for me too class it as true sci-fi. I watched a Christian Bale film a few years ago,set in a distopian future where enjoyment and pleasure are banned and he plays one of the thought police, enforcing the governments rule but finds he's succumbing to the other side. The problem is I cant remember the name(not sure if it's classed as sci-fi though. Gamer starring Gerard Butler is mint as well.

Joking aside though, social commentary is integral part of everything that I ever considered quality Sci-Fi. Actually, from my point of view of course, it's impossible to make one without it, so I'm not sure how 'too much of a social commentary' can possibly disqualify it as a Sci-Fi.

I am completely gobsmacked this original Sci-Fi film hasn't even had an honorary mention. The Film that many many others have borrowed ideas from. Countless music video's have used. It contained the first ever screen kiss and was a masterpiece in predicting the future. Channel 4 showed this film and included an amazing soundtrack with it in the 80's
I bring you
Fritz Lang's Metropolis
