Kevin Kilbane and Lawro were discussing the England squad centre back 'crisis' due to the recent Phil Jones injury. They considered Stones, but said he hadn't played enough games, then Lawro says, 'Of course, the best English centre back in terms of form is not going'. I thought for a second he was going to say Ryan but, of course, he says John Terry. They then all ruefully pondered this and couldn't offer anyone else.
I just can't figure why Ryan is so below the radar.

I'm glad he's below the radar, he was well and truly fucked over last time he played for England his confidence was shattered and he was then hung out to dry afterwards, fuck Woy and England and lets keep Ryan happy at Stoke ready for a challenge on the top 6 next season. Gouranga.

He's got better and better every season he's had with us but is constantly overlooked and can't get in the squad because of so-called better defenders like Steven Caulker and Chris Smalling. It's a joke really, if a bigger club were to sign him, Woy would have him straight in the squad.

Would things be different if we could erase the whole Ramsey thing from history?
It seems to have been one of those things, thanks to the odious Wenger, that has done him in for good.
The perception of him changed overnight from a promising young player to a hulking thug.

Assuming Ryan isn't picked on Monday(?), I hope he says "up you" and takes his family on a long holiday to unwind, get some quality rest, and recharges his batteries for next season. He's earned it.

And you're surprised how ??
I couldn't give flying fcuk about England, the geriatric buffoons who represent the FA or the Referees Association (snigger) or anyone else come to think about it.
I support Stoke !! the only pleasing thought is when the saggy faced Hodgson is relieved (sacked) of his duties after a calamitous World Cup campaign and the FA get together to discuss what went wrong and how to improve for the Euros, I'll tell you why because we're shit.

If I was him I would seriously consider changing allegiance to Wales. Forget Ramasy, Hughes may be able to offer him some advice on this matter. He deserves the chance to play international football.

Bit late, but a big banner at West Brom wouldn't go amiss. "Wyan is English too Woy" would do. Either that, or we could hijack a radio phone in. Lets make some noise I know it will have no effect, but it would certainly make me feel better.

It is not so much the fact that Shawcross ISN'T mentioned it's the fact that Caulker and Davies are mentioned AHEAD of him when neither have proved themselves ANYWHERE NEAR as much as him.

It just enforces my dislike of the whole England set up and that halfwit of a manager.
Ryan came on as sub against a Sweden side who were determined to put on a good show that night. He was then supposed to mark one of the worlds deadliest strikers who was clearly having the game of his life.
Bad positioning resulted in a goal for Sweden but that doesn't make him a bad defender who is constantly overlooked. For me it was bad management. To throw a debutante into that game at that particular point was a ludicrous managerial decision. Wouldn't it have been better to give Ryan his chance in one of the meaningless friendlies against lesser opposition England played in the lead up to the Sweden game ? By doing that it would have given Ryan the chance to settle gently into the set up with no pressure allowing him to grow in confidence and later flourish in that position.
Bad management ruined his England chances I'm afraid. Hopefully the current manager will be exposed for the clueless buffoon he is during the World Cup and soon after get sacked leaving the door open for a new appointment who will consider Ryan, give him a chance and more importantly manage the player in a better manner.

It's baffling to be honest. Young, English captain of one of the top 10 teams in the country, more talent in his left testicle than in the entirety of Caulker and Davies combined. Roy can do one for omitting him, but its Ryan I feel sorry for. What more could the lad possibly do to represent his country? What better role model could the children of England ever hope to have? Oh well, at least it lets him focus on the club that he clearly cares about. Ryan would do anything for SCFC, I doubt if Steven Caulker could locate Cardiff on a map. Probably couldn't even confidently tell you what country it's in.

good club player world cup standard NO England don't have any world class defenders so that argument is flawed. We're not comparing him to the likes of Maldini, we're comparing him to the likes of Smalling.

All the people in the mix play against people like Aguero, Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko, Lukaku etc every week in pressurised games in big atmospheres.
Is 'World Cup standard' a level above and beyond that?
Admittedly this is not a vintage defensive crop with big personalities like Adams, Butcher, Ferdinand, Terry, Campbell - which just makes it more bizarre he is completely erased from the conversation.

I could understand it if his name was mentioned and after discussion it was decided that for whatever reason, he wasn't quite what was needed. But for someone who's been consistently solid (at worst) and largely awesome for the past few years to not even get a mention (and he rarely does), it just seems very odd.
Personally, I think if he'd been given a few games, he'd have grown into the role, just as he's adapted to Stoke's new style after a slightly dodgy start. It's a real shame for Ryan (assuming he wants to play for his country) that he seems to have been put onto the scrap heap internationally without being given a fair chance.
It stinks!

The perception of him changed overnight from a promising young player to a hulking thug. For the average fan outside stoke Shawcross is seen as a slow minded thug, all because of that vile club that is arsenal. The problem with alot of people when they think of Shawcross they think about that tackle not his brilliant defending.
