Never been his biggest fan but he's been absolutely superb since November. £500k and 200+ appearances says he's been a very good signing and a great servant.......

He has been one of the best signings EVER made by SCFC £500k and has been a pivotal part of everything we have achieved and playing to instruction which many on here have refused to see It's mindboggling that players like Whitehead get threads thanking them for their service etc etc ( rightly so ) but Whelan often gets slaughtered by what used to be a vast majority but is now becoming a small handful Glenn Whelan you are a credit to SCFC +1

My player of the season, reads the game so well now and completely controls our play, him and Zonz are a very good partnership. Praying Begovic doesn't win player of the season, would be an insult to the rest of the squad

For 500k he has probably been one of our best value for money purchases.
Fantastic season.
My overall number two behind Bego for player of the year.

Swept the board last night. I don't think anyone really expected him to beat the big two did they, however most found a slot for him in their top 20 players of the season, unlike you mate!

I think so. From what I've seen. There were times when very few of our players looked great but i always thought Whelan was consistent and solid. I wasn't trying to be flippant just think that Glenn has provided the platform for the crowd pleasers to do their stuff. He couldn't even get a game for the first few months so that's complete arse gravy. Indeed, and when he wasn't getting a game we looked absolutely fucking clueless defensively. There was zero co-ordination between the midfield and the defence, nobody was winning tackles and therefore everytime we had the ball it was from our own goal kick because we literally never won the ball back in the middle of the park. That meant we were trying to play passing football the entire length of the field. As soon as Whelan came into the side he gave us a platform in the middle of the pitch, won tackles, started to turn posession over and allow us to counter attack instead of constantly trying to unlock a completely settled defence. Whelan has been exceptional this season, anyone who can't see that could have their knowledge of football written on the back of a stamp.

Wasn't a big Whelan fan at the start of the season, but he has proven me and many others wrong with his fantastic recent form.

I never really expected him to win. Bego and Shawcross have been great and are fully deserving of all accolades. Equally Arnie, Wingie and Adam have given us plenty of amazing memories this season and deserve recognition too.
Aside from all that though I still think Whelan's contributions should be overstated rather than understated.
For me his attitude is what you would hope to see from all pro footballers. Sheer focus, determination, professionalism and a desire to make the very most of what he has and keep proving people wrong.
I genuinely think we're very lucky to have Whelan and maybe over the years his contribution hasn't been recognised as much as it should have been. He's punched well above his weight for Ireland and Stoke, he's kept his head down and he's continually come back, despite being written off, to prove he can be an important player at this level.
I have no argument with any of the award winners......equally I'd have had no argument with Glenn winning any of the awards. In some ways I'm actually happier that he didn't win.......I've a feeling he's at his best when he feels he has a point to prove.

I think you are right, it's no coincidence that his best form usually comes when his place is under threat.

Yep. Probably why I like him so much. He's a like a concentrated version of what Stoke City in the Premier League is all about. They tell us we don't belong, we're not good enough etc but we seem to delight in proving them wrong. Just like Glenn we often seem at our best when we're backed into a corner and the odds are against us. A match made in football heaven.

What can you say about Glenn and his contributions this season?? Apart from simply brilliant that is. He's been a revelation. Dominating the middle. Winning tackles, spraying passes and allowing the likes of Arnie, Assaidi and Wingie the freedom to attack and express themselves. Always underrated, often written off but at no point did Glenn get his head down or believe any of the "only good enough for the Championship" crap. He probably didn't even listen. He's a link to what we were pre-Prem and probably the best example I've seen in red and white of "making the most of what you have". He's hardworking, plays the game simply and doesn't seem to give a toss that he rarely gets the recognition that his efforts deserve. Personally i think he's absolutely integral to what we are now and he's thriving in the new set up. While Shawcross and Bego have been outstanding its Whelan who, for me, has been consistently on top of his game. Influential, professional and consistent. My player of the season. Whelan's had a good second half of the season, but not done enough consistently over the entire the season to win it.

It's alright people slating the folk who used to knock him,but these people are forgetting that he was consistently average at best for a large portion of our time in this league, and looked nowhere near the player he has become this season. He is playing football that even his most ardent supporters wouldn't have thought he was capable of and long may it continue. He has had my vote for player of the season,if only for the fact that he has improved beyond belief.

Now I know that the vast majority of other posters rate Whelan and think he's had a very good season. Apart, of course, from the odd extremist who would refuse to recognise his contributions if he'd won the PFA Player of the year, Ballon d' Or and the Nobel Peace Prize. *cheeky winky thingy*

Yes, Ryan and Bego have again been most consistently good all season, but Glenn has been at the heart of the team, adapted to the new style and become the fulcrum of the side and in the second half of the season and put in some brilliant performances. Glenn is the personification of Stoke's turn around in attractive play this season and most represents what MH has been trying to achieve. Ryan, now, and Bego have had their recognition, it's time Glenn was recognised.

Yes Mr Coke has it spot on and its why i voted for Whelan too.His improvement has been astonishing and a huge endorsement of Hughes and his staff's coaching. Glen is the sort of player who will follow the manager's instructions to the letter. The fact that he hasn't played this well previously has more to do with how he was managed than his lack of natural ability. He deserves EVERY fans applause for what he has done for the club and at a cost of around one tenth of a Dean Whitehead....quite amazing
