Last World cup I laughed out loud when I read the series of hysterical articles in our crappy 'red tops'
(I dont buy newspapers now - they are obsolete as a concept and, I would far rather, wipe my arse on soft tissue paper)
but last time:- Englands world cup dream rest on the fitness of :-
Gareth Barry -no less
at best a jobbing / dogging midfielder - solid season by season pro - but laughably average at best in a world cup context
and again This time, no less than Phil Jones - hobbles off with his shoulder injury and, we are supposed to wait with 'baited breath', to see if he can be fit enough for our world cup squad
Again, a laughably ordinary player who, is only in the spotlight because of who he plays for.
This thread could smack of bitterness in the context that Ryan (arguably) is at least as good but, its not that
I dont want Ryan within ten miles of that England squad (for obvious reasons)
I suppose my point is - it just puts into context what chance we have got in a world cup IF such at very, very best, --- jobbing / lumbering 'everyones got one' - donkeys (such as Jones) are key.

Streching a bit to say Jones is 'key'. Improbable that he would be a starter.

Brazil have announced their squad for the World Cup Brazil Squad - Brazil WC 2014Interesting squad, doesn't look that strong to me, suprised Lucas Moura, Coutinho and a couple of others have missed out. Feel sorry for Ronaldinhio, this world cup has come just a little too late into his career, would have been great to see him involved

Anybody excited yet? Im not going lie but I cant wait I'm disappointed this season has flew in but I'm glad Brazil is just around the corner. Not particularly following any team but will be keeping close eyes on Bosnia, Nigeria & USA, think Bosnia will be the only ones to progress. Can't wait. Predicted winner: Spain

Anybody excited yet? Im not going lie but I cant wait I'll watch a few games but must say I have fallen out of love watching England. The interview with Stephen Gerrard after the 3-2 loss to Croatia summed it for me, asked if it was his worst moment in football he responded it was playing for England. Playing for England should be the be all and end all for a professional footballer, but those days have gone as have the players like Gasgcoigne, Pearce, Robson, Beckham who would give everything for the shirt. We should go with youth and build a team with real passion and a togetherness that simply isn't there right now.

But Ive not fallen out of love with England, I will be playing my usual selection of England songs, wearing my flag and facepaint, getting pissed with my mates, dreaming of glory and then living in the reality of either making it out of the group stage or very best the quarter finals. In honesty if we make it out of our group this summer England will exceed my expectations.

Getting out of the group would be good. But if we do and go out in a knockout stage some people will still complain and gripe. When it comes to the England team some people lose any sense of eational thought.

This time round though fans are expecting us to fail especially with the group were in. Hopefully the players will just give it there all and we will have a good tournament.

Thing is people don't expect us to get through but if we do get through they just moan anyway. What do they seriously expect? There is no reason to expect England to get further than the second round. Quarter final is pretty good.

We should go with youth and build a team with real passion and a togetherness that simply isn't there right now. i see what you mean in the sense that i don't get the nervous butterflies all day long before an England game that evening but i think that's a bit harsh using that interview as an example. even for the likes of Pearce, Gazza, Des Walker, Terry Butcher etc. who bled for the cause and gave it 150% everytime they pulled on an England shirt (and Becks is the last man i've seen truly play with that kind of passion for England), playing for England was not "The be all and end all" for them at all...... just because you give everything you have when you pull on an England shirt in no way means that's your sole purpose or sole goal...all of those players gave just as much for their club teams as well and i really don't see why Gerrard said anything wrong there mate. i agree we should go with youth and give them a chance but make no mistake, that won't guarantee any passion or togetherness whatsoever. most of the younger players nowadays have no passion for their club sides and just see pulling on an england shirt as something that happens to about 75% of englishmen nowadays at some point in their career as so many are given a crack at it now. unfortunately the passion of the england shirt has been completely replaced nowadays by the passion for money grabbing. when i grew up i (like most other young lads) wanted to play for Stoke simply because i loved football and loved Stoke. i know young lads nowadayswho support clubs like Wolves and Villa but when you ask who they want to play for when they grow up they say Man Utd. or Chelsea....it's not about the love of the sport or the love of the shirt anymore, it's about nothing but love of the glamorous women, the cars, the money and the celebrity that heat magazine brings. sad but just the way it is unfortunately, i just thank my lucky stars that i at least was fortunate enough to see those greats you mentioned give absolutely everything for the cause simply because they had 3 lions on their shirt and no other reason....i think we may be the last generation to see that kind of passion. still can't wait for the WC though.....as far as i'm concerned, just because the players have lost the passion for playing for England that doesn't mean that i should lower myself to their level and lose the passion for supporting England. for me it's not about the players wearing the shirt anymore, it's just about the shirt itself as it represents me, you and the rest of England. the people wearing it and their motives for doing so are irrelevant but the shirt itself isn't....those 3 lions still mean something to me and i'm not letting Jack wilshere take that away.

Sterling, Sturridge, wilshere, barkley, shaw, Townsend, Ox, All the good youth talent we've got is being used regularly. So let's get behind our countrymen. I'd give anything for a shearer, gazza, Owen, Lineker, Beckham but we haven't got them. We've got a new crop of youthful players who need the fans passion to help them fall in love with playing for England.

Looking forward to the World Cup and what England might do. Defensively I think we're way short at this level, but we have some pace in the side which might make us a bit more exciting.
I actually quite enjoyed the Germany game in 2010. Young, developing German team go 2 up, then we get one back. The drama of Lampard's "goal", then the same player hitting the bar early in the second half. But for fine margins we could have been 3-2 up then. Then we push on too much and get caught. Exciting incident packed game, and in the end the best team won.
It's not like watching Stoke and I can't really explain why. Somehow I feel more detached from the national team than I do my local team.
I think Argentina will do well too. They have goal scorers and the draw favours them in terms of the conditions.

I love the World Cup for the whole thing. One of my favourite ones was 1994 aqnd we didn't even qualify. BUT for all that I'd love England do well. Unfortunately each year sees England stand still while other nations evolve. Excessive use of the P word and the P words implementation is indicative of the issues to be addressed.

To be announced today. Will Shawcross be in it? No way he's now slipped behind Stones in the thoughts of the England management. Its a pity for the lad but at least we get him back fresh and rested instead of jaded after busting a gut trying to impress that horrible old bastard all summer.

Is this going to degenerate into another round of "I hate England because I bloody love Stoke City" circle jerk?
Ryan isn't going. It's a shame, it's an injustice, but is there any chance we can move on now?

Based on the leaks yesterday, the consensus seems to be:
-Hart Foster Forster -Johnson Baines Shaw -Cahill Jagielka Jones Smalling -Gerrard Henderson Lampard Wilshere Barkley -Lallana Ox Milner Sterling -Rooney Sturridge Welbeck Lambert
...which doesn't seem too bad at all IMO.

I'm really struggling to see any combination of four of those defenders keeping out Suarez for more than 30 seconds. What have Jones, Smalling or Johnson done to deserve a place?

He seems to have a bit of a thing for Smalling. And if you take Shawcross out of the equation, choosing someone like Stones or Caulker wouldn't make me feel any more positive for the back-up centre-half. I probably would've gone with Barry too - as a more natural holding option. It'll be intersting to see what would happen if Glen Johnson was injured or suspended, especially if Jones isn't 100%. I'm pretty pleased with the squad though (if that is the squad) - it's got a little bit of most things
