2 of those 3 free kicks came from blatant dives by Baines. It was shit by Pennant but talk of it being deliberate are stupid really in my opinion. For me, it was a player who had barely played any football for 2 years trying to do something positive and play himself into the game. He didn't do it very well at all and his performance was a shocker but i'm sure he will be gutted about it. Not quite as gutted as us but gutted all the same. As I posted after the Spurs game, it is harsh to expect Pennant to come in and do brilliantly from the start. If he's an option for us, he needs 6-10 games to find his legs. Look at Assaidi as a prime example of that. He was garbage when he first played, fucked after 10 minutes...today he was up and down that line like a man possessed and he turned in a cracking performance. The fact is he has lost the pace he had over 5 yards that made him an attacking threat. Against Spurs it was obvious he couldn't create space to allow him to contribute and he kept looking for freekicks when he came under pressure. This culminated in the mad back pass. He has not had a good game for any team in over 2 years and this includes the spell at Wolves where he was regularly involved. Pulis was hit and miss at ttransfers but typically correct on calls on players he saw every day, like Pulis, Hughes continues to pick Walters, Crouch and Whelan despite all 3 being written off by some groups and players he let go like Tuncay and Marshall hav enot made any great noise. Pulis spotted that Pennant had gone but it got lost in the noise over curfews and personalities but there can surley be no doubt the end of the road is here I am not disputing that Pennant may not be the player he was back in 2011 but the fact is until he gets a run of 6-10 games, we will never know. You say he hasn't had a decent game for anyone for 2 years but he played very well when he came on at West Ham. He was awful against Tranmere, which for me was more of a barometer but even so, if he is perceived to have any use to us, then he needs a run of games. He hasn't played any meaningful football for 2 years so it is harsh to expect him to simply come in and pick up the pace straight away. Can we afford to give him the games he needs if he is going to play as he did against Spurs and Everton? Not really but that is Mark Hughes call and it will be on his head!

Hughes was willing to give Ireland for instance a run of sub appearances and then games to try and get him up to speed. But I don't think he will give Pennant that luxury as I don't think Hughes will see him as a long term option.

your defence of the indefensible is simply ridiculous I'm not defending his performance, hence describing it as a 'nightmare', I'm merely saying that he is getting completely needless abuse for making a mistake. Pieters Back-Pass against Villa cost us a goal and could very nearly have lost us two points but he wasn't getting abuse, and he made a stupid challenge to grant Newcastle a penalty the next week. This is more frustrating because we were a couple of minutes from winning the game but it just shows that players make mistakes all the time. this has nothing to do with pieters mistaken back pass. Since coming on all he did was give away free kicks in dangerous positions . Then in the penalty incident he had already rashly tackled the Everton player to the extent that a penalty cos have been given for that first tackle, but he was reprieved, but nit content with all the damage he had already caused the reckless low life piece of shit forced the ref into giving a 93rd minute penalty with another reckless tackle thus undoing all the good which the rest if the team had so bravely defended. Ghat is why his behavior is completely indefensible

I couldn't give a shit whether Pennant features or not. If he does, I want him to do a damn site better than he did at Spurs and against Everton. If Hughes wants him involved, then I am inclined to believe that we need to give him a run of games to get the best out of whatever talents he has left. If Hughes doesn't, then that is fine with me as well. I am non-plussed either way. I just want us to have some attacking options worthy of the name. At present, we only have Assaidi and Arnie (if he can be arsed and if he can get himself fit because he clearly isn't at the moment) capable of causing the opposition any problems. The rest of our forward/creative players, including Ireland, are too inconsistent and too "hit or miss" with their work. If we can get new forward/creative players in, I wouldn't be sad to see everyone other than Assaidi and Arnie leave because they are all toss in some way shape or form. Adam, Ireland, Jerome, Walters, Crouch, KJ, Pennant and Etherington (I think that's all of them) could all leave tomorrow and I wouldn't give a flying fuck. They are all crap, though I accept that may be a tad harsh on Ireland who has done very well in patches. We need power and pace in our team and none of those players offer it even if they have some other qualities. Only KJ has the raw ingredients to offer it but he is about as aggressive as my 7 month old son.

I think we will slowly see those players you mention leaving over the next year, starting this month hopefully. But we need to have replacements in that better the team and pace is the big thing we are crying out for.
