He's on 60 or 70k a week at Villa isn't he? One of the last of their big money signings that ultimately didn't work out. I expect we were never interested in paying the full amount and Villa have accepted a contribution % around the 50% mark when initially they probably would have wanted us to pick up all of his wages.

Perfect loan signing to be honest. Has a lot to prove. As several others have said it doesn't really matter if it doesn't work out... Tend to agree, except that he has to show he's worth his wages, which he hasn't done in recent years. Given general opinion on here, if he pisses about at Stoke he will be on a one-way street to the exit gate. Good luck to him - hope he has the professional pride to do what he is capable of.

Man City fan here. Stephen Ireland (or Stevie Fishtank as he was also known by blues) played his very best footie under Mark Hughes. He is a genuine head case but a genius footballer who has lost his way. If, somehow, Les can get the best out of him, you will have one hell of a creative player on your hands. I hope it works out for him with Stoke and I hope you give him your full backing. Interesting debut game perhaps?

What is it with Lambert? He's done the same to Bent, Hutton and Ireland, as if he was trying to knock their value down to £0.00. Bent did nothing wrong just didnt fit the system Lambert plays, Hutton is just a thug thinly disguised as a footballer and Ireland just aint done it for Lambert so had to go, also Given wants first team football at his age and he aint gonna get it at Villa, the underlying factor with all those i've mentioned is the sky high wages their on Lerner and Lambert are determined to drive the wage bill down so they've got to go even if it's as with Ireland on loan with a % of the wages still payed by Villa.

Just like MH, Stephen knows he has a real chance to show his footballing skills in the Prem
Let's hope he features in the squad v Man City.
A great game for both of them to prove a point (hopefully 3!).

This is a very interesting deal. Could be anything, might not work out (in which case we've lost very little) or could be a great success, if we can get Ireland back to playing the type of foottball he was once capable of. Just the sort of driving and creative midfield player we would need to both score goals and create chances for our strikers.
Certainly more upside than downside.
The other possible scenario is that he's been purchased to essentially be Charlie Adam's spare pair of legs, and when Adam conks out after around 60 mins of each game, we bring on Ireland to take up where he left off.
Would be interested to know how fit he is currently.

We were all focusing on a striker but it seems that LMH realised that getting a quality striker at the right price and terms was just too diffficult, so he's gone about it by another route. He's brought in two attacking midfielders with Arnie and Ireland who should provide better support and service to a Crouch or Jones and hopefully re-ignite their scoring touch, as well as notch a few themselves. Another thing with Ireland is that he is going to be wit lots of familiar faces, with LMH's coaching team and our Irish international contingent (Whelan, Walters, Wilson), and thA should surely help him settle in quickly to his fresh start.

What an absolute horrible guy he is....taken from wiki...why would we sign such a guy?? I thought there was no better than playing for your country!!!
In September 2007, Ireland was at the centre of controversy when, in the immediate aftermath of a Republic of Ireland international match and days before their crunch game against the Czech Republic, coach Steve Staunton informed him of a telephone call just received from his girlfriend reporting the death of his maternal grandmother. Staunton quickly consented to Ireland's compassionate leave on these grounds, a private jet was chartered for his return.
However the media quickly discovered that Ireland's grandmother was not dead, at which point Ireland announced it was his paternal grandmother who died but yet again, reporters discovered that Ireland's paternal grandmother was also still alive, and her relatives had threatened to sue one newspaper that reported her death. Ireland changed his story again, saying one of his grandfathers had divorced, and it was his second wife who had died. That was also quickly discovered to be untrue.[34]
Ireland eventually came out with the truth, admitting he had invented a reason to leave the Irish team in order to visit his girlfriend in Cork.

I have favourite players at stoke like most stokies but what makes them my favourite is a good player, commitment to stoke and being a nice guy. This guy is quite obviously not nice, he doesnt give a shit about his national team, so where does that leave stoke. Horrible signing.

He's a Stokie for the season now, new start and a chance to revive his career. Good luck to him and let's hope he can recapture some of the form we saw at Man City where he was one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premiership.

I'll be amazed if MH gets much out of him. At best he'll be back up and just might keep Adam on his toes.

Leopards do not change their spots. If he is capable of behaving like this, he will always be capable of doing similar things again. His character is seriously flawed as shown by his previous lifestyle as spread all over the web. Makes pennant look like a model professional.

there is more to this story Too right...whatever the excuse...he had three people dead and lied...fucking parasite!! Fucking bothered more like. Who gives a flying fuck what story he invented to get out of playing for Ireland? As someone said above, it's not like he put anyone's bloody life in danger is it. I actually think it's pretty funny - as long as he doesn't repeat the trick for Stoke, of course. Brilliant isn't it, we've got a brand new signing being called "horrible" and a "parasite" before he's even kicked a ball for us, all for the heinous crime of making up an excuse not to play for a team nothing to do with us, seven years ago. I think it's a cracking signing - low-risk, low-commitment and not critical to the team, but a player with genuine talent and the potential to be absolutely storming, a la Hendrie/Pennant. Good luck to the lad.

I think the point people are trying to raise is the fact we have 4 full Ireland internationals in the first team and I'm pretty sure they know what went on!, not convinced they will take to him too well!!!, so in that respect this is a high risk signing and does have potential to disrupt squad harmony in my humble opinion!
