Doesn't that rather imply that incredibly successful multi-millionaire businessman Peter Coates is incapable of changing with the times? I don't wish to imply it I am explicitly saying it he is a conservative (small c) man in every way. The idea that Peter Coates would choose of his own violition some of the managers who have been touted (not just this thread) is simply laughable. We all know that Denise is the driving force behind Bet365 It appears that John Coates is a big Stoke fan my guess is that if the next manager will be appointed by consensus of the board rather than Peter Coates appointment & that Peter would either go in teh summer or go in 12 months rather tha changing teh manager & thr chairman at teh same time. He's ploughed rather a lot of money into a venture that rarely turns a profit for such a conservative, cautious man. He's also made the transition from vampire to saviour. Not a stretch to think he might be capable of making a reasonably progressive appointment IMO. Not saying he definitely would but don't think the very idea can be so casually dismissed. Don't think his list would start and end with Stuart Pearce either.

There are only, two in my opinion: 1. Rafael Benitez 2. Ian Holloway Won't happen though as Tony Pulis will stay (thankfully). EDIT: Roberto Martinez?! You've got to be joking, surely? Steve Bould, I can see it working out alright, but he won't make us a top-half side. It's becoming increasingly clearly that Pulis won't make us a top-half side either.

The only one I'd be comfortable with is Allardyce, and he's not available. He could move us up a level or two without changing our philosophy too much or too quickly. He would also pretty much guarantee survival in the league in the short term which a lot of the gambles ive seen in this thread simply cannot do.
If West Ham decide to part company with him he is the only sensible option at the moment.

mickstupp,
If there was a vacancy, I think Allardyce is one of the more sensible candidates.Don't think you will get many backers though because it seems many fans are looking for pure football. Anyway it's irrelevant because Pulis will still be in charge.

He stays next season then there maybe a hint of change early doors but as he starts to get cold feet then we will see pretty much exactly what we have done this season, trying to survive. Pulis isn't the man the club needs now. He's done his time, hopefully, he will keep us up this season and pass on to a new manager with new ideas which will work in tandem with all this change that the club is proposing.

I know who I would like but based on 2 reports I have had from people associated with West Bum I also know who I don't want. Obviously these points are alleged!
First of the comments was from a coach in their youth development. The players were chuffed to bits when he went. He was extremely hands off and sometimes he couldn't even be arsed to turn up to training. When he did he breezed around smoking a cigar. This followed promotion from the Championship where he thought he was to be imminently snapped up by one of the big boys.
The second comment was that the majority of the behind the scenes staff couldn't stand him due to his arrogance and laziness. They were well shot of him and saw Roy as their saviour. Even at his age he put RDMs work ethic to shame, boots on and getting involved..again the vast majority of players were delighted.
I know these are only two points but I especially trust the first one due to the source and the second one backs it up. Two separate sources...oo er! ITFK!

Please tell me your not eternally grateful for negative, square peg Pulisball. When the right players are playing, I enjoy watching the so called "Pulisball" just as much as I enjoy watching Brazil play. The signings of players like Peter Crouch (who does not fit our system, in my humble opinion) is one reason why the effectiveness of "Pulisball" began to descend about two years ago. Players like Kenwyne Jones and Jonathan Walters (when played in the hole), on the other hand, fits the system perfectly and when they are playing in their proper positions, we get the results. Jermaine Pennant's fall-out with Pulis and Matthew Etherington's "big drop" hasn't made the life of "Pulisball" easier in any way. We need two quick wingers, who can put a good ball into the box. Pennant could, in my opinion, cross the ball as good as anyone in the world a couple of years ago, and Matty was good enough to play for England when he was at his best in 2010/11. Now, our right winger is either Jon Walters or Ryan Shotton. None of them can cross a proper ball into the box, and none of them has the pace (or the skill for that matter) to beat their man. I know, we do have Michael Kightly (who has got some pace, but not the crossing-ability "Pulisball" desperately needs to work properly). But he is a right winger and he has showed that he can score as well, and that is why I can't believe we're not playing him more. He did play in the game against Liverpool on boxing-day (as did everyone who fit the system), and we played the best game of football we have played in two years. Begovic Cameron Huth Shawcross Wilkinson Kightly Whelan N'Zonzi Etherington Walters Jones Those are the lads who started against the game Liverpool on the 26th December 2012, and that is the team we should play with these last four games (except Wilson at left back and Wilko at right back, if Marc is fit). With that line-up, "Pulisball" has got every chance to be as enjoyable as it is watching Barca (or whoever you may like to watch) play, at least for us Stokies. Because, most of us enjoyed the 2010/11-season didn't we? "Pulisball" at its best! In the summer though, we've got to sign the right players who fits the system and sell the ones who doesn't. In my opinion, we should start off the window by selling Peter Crouch and sign a new winger who knows how to beat his man and cross the ball into the bloody box.

Well we haven't managed one yet and are currently further away from doing so than at any stage since promotion... Your previous post is spot on, but I don't see why there's reason to believe the manager is suddenly going to start picking those players? He could've done that at any time since the turn of the year.

Just out of interest, Rob, what did you think of Crouch's goal?
The build up was straight out of TPs tactical manual: Marc Wilson wins the ball relatively high up the pitch and plays a quick ball down the channel/wing. Jerome showed decent pace to get in behind and pull the ball back. Crouch made up the ground in a quick break, made a good run going outside to inside to get in front of his marker and produced a neat finish.
Maybe with service his technical ability can be successful in our system?

We were playing 4-4-2 with Crouchy just off Jerome, that goal wouldn't ever had happend if we'd been playing 4-4-1-1 with Crouch leading the line and either Walters or Adam playing in the hole.

I didn't see the game live but from what people have said it seems like we played the front two closer together and made good use of Jerome's pace and were generally more positive. I don't see any lasting changes to how we play as long as TP's here though. He just doesn't do them.

Basically we have 4 camps
Complete Gambles - Bould and Neville
Slight Gambles - Holloway, Mclaren, Poyet, Solksjaer, Martinez, RDM, Lee Clarke
Safe Choice - Hughton, Oniell, Allardyce, Redknapp, Klinsman if we could get him
Never going to happen so why even mention it - Benitez, Moyes
Personally i think Allardyce for a few years to re-cement our place then look at moving on

Just a few points about Steve Davis. Firstly the success of the Crewe Academy over the years has been largely down to Dario Gradi. Secondly playing young players in Leagues 1 & 2 is a bit different than in the Premier League. Thirdly Davis has very limited experience. I don't think Tony Pulis has any problem with young players, but establishing Stoke has a Premier League Club needed experience first and foremost. Watching Villa last night it seemed to me they had a lot of young players who froze on the night. Yes and I know Villa beat Stoke a few weeks ago.

Paul, that's a fair point about the traditional "system", but it was a classic TP "quick possession turnover" goal.
I thought Jerome was good off the ball. He worked hard and hurried their deeper players in possession. He missed a couple of early half chances though.
I didn't see the game live either, Rob, but I thought it was a nice goal too. Sometimes Crouch is criticised for his mobility, but I thought his pace was OK and his movement and finish top class.
I suppose the one mitigating factor was that his marker was Clint Hill, so not exactly tortoise and the hare!

Absolutely Okey, it was a classic quick break TP goal but it begs the question (as some of us were predicting two seasons ago) ... why has TP been shoehorning Crouch into his rigid 4-4-1-1 system as the lone striker leading the line on his todd, rather than playing to Crouchy's strengths and partnering him with a pacey striker in a 4-4-2 for all this time?

Fair point, Paul, and I guess the answer is so that SJW can do his defensive harrying work dropping back into midfield.
TP said all week in the build up that he wanted them to be "on the front foot", and in fairness he delivered that.
With regard to a new manager, the list of realistic "possibles" is still one of the most compelling reasons to stick with Tone!

There are a lot of things to consider.
There are loads of possibilities this summer which is strange and also a really good opportunity for a club of our size. I think it's fair & realistic to say following Pulis' escapades in transfer windows that a manager with a good track record in the transfer market is an important factor, as is his ability to win over the media to improve the current dull reputation of the club. I think it goes to show the amount of money that has been spunked up the wall on surplus and inadequate players that it is best to spunk the money on the best manager we can afford.
David Moyes ---> Should be I would say probably everybodys number 1 target & rightly so, he does use the Everton Academy and is as good as you will find in the transfer market, he is also very respected within the game & media & will have no problem whatsoever attracting the better standard of player. It's a no brainer really, we should move heaven & earth to get him on board, he might be tempted with a larger than average transfer kitty after not having two pennies to scratch his arse with at Everton.
Mark Hughes ---> Did very well at Blackburn, Fulham & Wales before being put in 2 jobs that demanded him to buy as good as a new squad instantly and get them playing as a team, I'm convinced with a patient board like ours who would give him reasonable funding and his own time to build, he'd be a great option.
Steve MaClaren ---> Did well enough with Middlesborough to get he England job, known to be a great coach and rated highly by Ferguson. MaClaren has won the League in Holland for a team that hadn't won it for 20 years, it didn't work out for him in Germany but he has furthered his education in the game and will no doubt have a good idea of players worth purchasing from the German & Dutch Leagues who happen to demand a modest wages as 99% of both leagues clubs pay very low wages in comparison to the Premiership.
Martin O Neill - Good manage, the only thing I'm not certain about with him is if he is going to start demanding silly money to get Stoke into the top 6.
Di Matteo ----> Could be a good option but largely untried.
Gus Poyet ---> Looks like a good manager with good football but largely untried in the Premiership although they do score goals and have a very decent defence.
Alan Curbishley ---> Everybody moaned at his poor standard of football but he really didn't have a pot to piss in yet he kept Charlton up season after season, I'd like to see what he could do with modest funding. He's also still in touch with the game as he appears reguarly on T.V doing the punditry.
Loads to go at!!
My own personal choice in order atm would be
1) Moyes 2) MaClaren 3) Hughes 4) Poyet 5) Curbs 6) Di Matteo 7) Martinez
