im not a big fan of his although hes definitely improved this season. ..His big problem for me is his passing is very inconsistent and when he does make a pass 9 times out of 10 its either backwards or sideways, He's a good championship player but very mediocre at this level.

Whelan hasn pulled up any trees for most of his time here and has been dropped quite often and nearly sold.
this season he has been ok but I think nzonzi makes whelan look a bit better than he actually is

The day to replace Glenn Whelan is the day we don't look a worse side for his absence. As poor as he was today, he's been excellent this season for anyone with a memory lasting back more than about 72 hours.

He is in a long line of Stoke midfielders who although do a good job breaking things up and stop other teams from playing but never actually create anything or score any goals. Would be interesting to see how many goals Whelan has actually scored in the what seems like endless time he has been with us!! Name me one truly creative central midfielder who has scored goals regularly under Tony Pulis? Have a think about it. I think you have answered your own question!! There in lies the problem!

Top 3 Tony Pulis central midfielders have got to be.... 1) Steven N'Zonzi 2) John Eustace 3) Glenn Whelan Fair? If so, doesn't that speak volumes? Swap Eustace for Delap, I think.

He's inconsistent at best. N'zonzi is 100 times the player Whelan is and will ever be.
Yes he's done ok in spells, but I think its time to move on.

I'm not advocating dropping him or anything but its painful to watch him against real good players.

To be fair though Rob if you pass backwards and sideways 9 times and then every time you pass forwards you give it away you can statistically look very good. Not that i'm knocking the lad as this season he's been in great form. It's just another example of how stats can be completely misleading. I will always remember the year that Carragher won the 'best passer in the league' statistically. It's easy to look good on paper if you never attempt to make a threatening but more difficult pass. Statistics are so often bollocks it's untrue and yet they are trotted out as facts all the time.

That's the job of whoever plays in the middle though beardy, so why is 'crap distribution' Whelan so consistently better at it than whoever else is in midfield? He was the worst player on the pitch today though.

Also, passing the ball backwards and sideways is the job he's assigned to do. I appreciate that Rob but no risk passes are hardly enough to claim he has 'good distribution'. We could all make most of the passes he attempts. As i said, if you look at stats alone and don't take into account the difficulty then Carragher would be a better passer than Beckham. I think we both know that isn't the case. What makes Whelan a good player for us is his positioning and discipline and not his passing skills. N'Zonzi's passing is in a different league whether stats back it up or not.

He had a poor game today but he wasn't alone in that as most of the team did. He has been very good this season and shown what a good player he can be.
Would like to see him getting forwards more but he isn't going to if the team is playing how they lined up today.
On the point of worse midfield player in the premier league, his own team mate Deano is a candidate for that.

He's no world beater when it comes to passing but people singling him out as shit at it don't know what they're talking about. I also don't think it's quite as easy as you're making out (Deano and even Rory, who I love to pieces, certainly make hard work of it). Our midfielders are given a remit and Glenn shines when he's given a bit more freedom.
