I expect he'll rest players for the first 5 games, so that he'll have his first team fit and ready for the Swansea match.
Anything else would be foolhardy.

The Pulis bashing has become ridiculous recently! He literally can't say anything without people slagging him off.
The Sentinel ask him about our Irish players and he talks about their system being the same as ours, which it is. He gets slagged.
The fixtures come out and The Sentinel ask Pulis about them. He says we've got a tough start, which we have. He gets slagged.
I'd like to know what people think he should have said. And to those that say 'nothing', a good relationship with the local media is important and I don't think PC (or most fans) would be very happy if Pulis stopped speaking to The Sentinel just because the odd muppet slags him for every word that leaves his mouth.

Totally agree - even though I felt let down by him and some of his crazy tactics last season and remain damn worried about the coming season, the level of hysteria on here is getting to, well a level of hysteria.

If you actually read the responses he's hardly getting slagged off is he? TP is the kind of character that you can always comment on and have a laugh about. I don't think there's anything too hard hitting here to frighten the likes of momo.

Maybe he hasn't been 'slagged off' (although he was about his Ireland comments) but there is still a two-page thread about his comments, despite them being typically banal manager quotes on a tough start.

What should he have said?
How about something along the lines of....
"it's a tough start for sure but we had a tough start last season and did better than many expected. Hopefully we can do the same again this time around".

Has it really got to the stage where we're dissecting every interview he gives, pointing out what he's said wrong? 1) He's said nothing out of the ordinary. 2) What does it even matter what he's said? Roberto Mancini kept saying to the media that City wouldn't win the league but you can be sure he was saying something different to the players. I won't worry until Pulis says: 'We can write August and September off because we'll struggle to get any points'.

You play all the teams twice throughout a season - I'm sure in a Pulis press conference there's always a reason why you wouldn't want to play any of the teams early in the season - the top ones, the newly promoted ones, the ones' who've spent money, the ones trying to impress a new manager etc etc.
I'd like him for once to be able to balance out these constant tedious underdog comments with an acknowledgment that it will be tough BUT that thanks to investment in new players, a more balanced squad, lessons learned from previous seasons in the division, input of new coaches to enable us to play a more expansive game etc etc we are ready to actually compete with at least one team in the division!

Even more reason to try and assemble our squad before August is out hey then Tone?! Spot on - I expect the transfer market to really get going after the Euros. We need to be in there to compete for players at first and then look at who becomes available as "cast offs" from the very best teams. We did some shrewd business in signing Peter Crouch on this basis

hes going to get slated on here for anything he says, it really is pathetic. The majority of managers give the same repetitive answers in interviews if you can take your Pulis hating spectacles off for once

I also agree with this, we won't get relegated under Pulis I'm sure of that, not 100% sure on the football being as some fans want it, but if you want just Premier Survival by any means then Pulis is our man! However you have to understand the worries of some (not the "PHW" as some call them) considering our football has regressed after 4 years and close to £80 mil spent.

I wish Pulis would be more like Phil Brown and Alan Ball, building up expectations to a level which can never be achieved and ultimately turning out to be nothing more than hot air, and less like Bob Paisley and Alex Ferguson who for some reason thought it was cool to keep their feet on the ground, guard against complacency and refuse to give their opponents an added incentive by rubbishing them before a game.
Good to see it's the time of year when Pulis-bashing scrapes the barrel.
I await the thread complaining that he hasn't revealed more details of his three-year plan, and another thread whingeing we haven't brought in new signings as quickly and astutely as Wolves did last season, and Hull the year before.

Even more reason to try and assemble our squad before August is out hey then Tone?! Yes exactly, but we won't we'll do it same as usual leaving Pulis saying new signings need time etc etc.... We shouldn't be fearing these games we should be relishing them, we won't of played 456 games this season either when these games take place.

There is a difference between building up expectations and Pulis' favoured David V's Goliath speeches. A bit of middle ground and confidence/belief in the players he bought with good money wouldn't hurt.

Homzy...For the record I am not slagging anything that TP has said in this interview off. I was merely responding to the question about "what he could have said". He could have said as I suggested, giving a happy medium of all things but TP is not media genius whereas I am! He can say what he wants about our fixtures and I agree that we have a difficult start. The last opening fixture I would have wanted would have been any of the promoted teams to be honest. I don't disagree with what he said at all but was merely answering a question that was raised. You Rimmers are so sensitive these days. EDIT - What a great post to pick out Jokelad. I didn't slag Pulis off in that link but more commented on the lack of seeming certainty or confidence in the ability to see Palacios back to full fitness and being the player that we know he can be!

I just find it ridiculous that he can't say something as banal as he has to the Sentinel without him getting criticised by some fans.

I haven’t got a problem with what he’s said Homzy. In this case he is bang on.
The 2 problems I have are: -
1) You know he would have said pretty much exactly the same thing regardless of who our opening fixtures were. He’s pointed out Reading as being difficult as they are newly promoted, he’s also mentioned the top teams as being difficult and he’s also thrown Wigan in there. That covers the top, the middle and the bottom of the league.
2) I just wish he was a bit more positive in his comments in the press every now and then. Surely it doesn’t have to always be “we’re doing smashing for little old Stoke City football club”.

It's quite amazing how all TP's quotes and interviews in the sentinel get labeled 'banal' and 'Throw away comments'. No one has argued that it isn't going to be a tough start and no one had asked that he say that we will be battering teams. It would be nice to hear from him instead of him talking up Southampton that we intend to give it a good go no matter who we play. We know this isn't the case though with his 'Bonus Games'. Just once I'd like to hear him give himself and the team credit and not angle to be the underdog. The label has worn far too thin with me. H
