Even though I am normally a bit liberal leftie in my views, I think the idea of having a non elected Head of State completely removed from party politics works well. Apparently Obama has to spend 40% of his working time on head of State duties as opposed to his political duties - that is a waste of his time which could and should be used to help solve the problems of his country and the world.
If you were starting from scratch, I doubt if anyone would suggest a contitutional hereditary monarchy for head of state. But we are where we are - and, bizzarely, it works. It actually works better than many things in our public life. As far as the cost is concerned, I reckon that tourism money means that the Monarchy runs at either break even or a profit and I can't imagine a presidential head of state would do so.
Leave it as it is, say I.

Thank fuck that disgusting display of opulence is over. Days of mass-brainwashing on State TV. People in mass-hypnosis.
This "proud to be British" stuff is used as weapon to silence any dissenters. The most disappointing thing is many waving their flags are some of the most vulnerable in society who've been fucked over by the unelected elite since birth. And they're waving their flags at someone who has gold dripping from the ceiling.
This Queen (worth 17 TRILLION at least) with a 60 million quid hat has given her royal consent to bill after bill removing power from people and placing it into the hands of an elite few. Privatisation of the NHS being the latest so corporation friends can rape the profits, with dozens of MPs having vested interests in these corporations.
This Queen should be hung for treason, signing EU treaties that abolish our nation. She is the only monarch to have broken her Coronation oath and failed as the ultimate check and balance, failed to insist on a national vote for the abolition of our nation.
And yet we are supposed to wave flags at her and "be proud to be British". Her main concerns are not Britain but the elite bloodline she represents. The bloodline that over centuries has raped and pillaged wealth and land from the ordinary people all across Northern Europe and further afield.
The State media and the sickening brainwashing of kids (like Hitler Youth) has kept people oblivious to this or in a condition of Stockholm Syndrome for decades.
The elderly, vulnerable, disabled, unemployed are living in poverty so the money can go to the criminal banking elite who are same aristocracy. The Jubilee is like sleight of hand while the ordinary folk are robbed. Maybe waving a flag is all some people have got left?
People forced to work for free at this mass-hypnosis fest and made to sleep outside whilst the elite live it up to the max at our expense, backslap themselves and piss themselves at the grovelling masses before them. We are just fucking livestock to them.
"Proud to be British" would be giving the people back what belongs to them, removing this foreign aristocracy from their palaces and taking back powers handed to their friends in Europe.

Starkiller - The Queen worth 17 trillion? 17 trillion of what? Certainly not £s.
What have you been smoking? You are entitled to your opinion, of course, but try to get your facts correct - if your figures are out by several hundred (or thousand!) percent, most people aren't going to take you seriously.
Cheers for giving me a good laugh anyway. ;D

The list is: Canada, the 2nd largest country on earth, with 2,467 million acres, Australia, the 7th largest country on earth with 1,900 million acres, the Papua New Guinea with 114 million acres, New Zealand with 66 million acres and the UK with 60 million acres.

She doesn't "own" a sixth of the land on the planet. You (or the people you are quoting) obviously have no idea what a constitutional monarchy actually means. She doesn't "own" Australia or Canada etc. If she did own those countries how is it that she can't stop them voting to become republics? Why doesn't she charge them rent? Why isn't she entitled to a percentage of the income (GDP) that they produce?

I am happy to concede that there is debate over her private ownership of land but this ownership is separate from her role as head of state and seems to be outright ownership. And she does have power over the Canadian parliament news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7765206.stm

Yes, she has powers over various parliaments - but only the power that THEY CHOOSE TO ALLOW HER TO HAVE. They (just like our Parliament) can remove those powers should they see fit to do so. If 50% +1 of the Canadian or Australian people voted to become a republic - that's it - job done.
In effect, it would be more correct to say that she has RESPONSIBILITIES rather than powers. That's what a constitutional Monarchy is all about. It is the PEOPLE (via their elected MPs etc.) who make and amend the constitution - she and her successors operate within its boundaries. But she cannot change those boundaries although the electorate can..

Ey up, he's back, the millions have been brainwashed while the hundred or so are right I'll think you'll find it's a lot more than a hundred or so. Yes and folk have been brainwashed since primary school into the monarchy. I suppose getting kids when they're most impressionable to wave flags in support of this feudal system has no effect? Hitler would disagree over this. I expect you think the BBC and other media carries a full range of views too. And no comment from anyone about the Queen signing away this nation in EU Treaties? "And no comment from anyone about the Queen signing away this nation in EU Treaties?"
You really haven't understood what a Constitutional Monarchy means, have you?
1. The people elect MPs - we can argue about the method of election but that is another argument.
2. MPs vote on legislative Bills - on Europe and host of other things
3. The Queen signs that legislation into Acts of law - AS SHE IS CONSTITUTIONALLY BOUND TO DO. You might as well blame the printers who print the Acts as the Monarch who signs them.
