Im enjoying reading peoples exploits, thats the whole intention of the thread People that immediately turned on me for daring to post this can go and help you find your sense of humour My weapon of choice back then was a thick, strong, leather needle araldited into a craft knife handle, a BIG leather needle. The law never found it as it was so easy to hide. Now I'm not suggesting it was big or clever, just what I used to use. It was in and out quick (sharpish you might say ;D) and caused more pain than serious injury. It really scared the fuck out of people because they thought they'd been stabbed. You could say that some blokes have had a prick or two up the shitbox from Mr Sausage in the past ;D Fuck me did they scream, even the biggest It got snapped off in a guys thigh outside the Stoke end donkeys years ago in a big melee and the handle ended up down a grid. Happy days ??? But maybe it's all just made up bollocks Bollocks or not ive got a massive erection

Admin, Should this thread be in general discussion? Thugs using football as a flimsy excuse to fight, doesn't actually make it football related.

Maybe while we're at it we could bring back child labour, the slave trade and replace houses with mud huts.

Jesus get a life Your raves must be legendary Just had a look back on here after my earlier post, you are really at the thugish braindead rock bottom of society, yes it went on and yes it tarnished and disgraced our football club. Football violence was a horrible part of our history, Bragging about it on here and saying that it gives you a hard on is bottom rung stuff. What about all the innocent "scarfers" that just wanted to see a game of football. All the mindless shit they-we had to go through, waiting for buses that never turned up whist you had your 'fun' or the times we were 'rounded up' and 'man handled' by the police whilst you were 'giving it the big un' the amount of times i have missed out on away tickets (id card saga) or being denied a pre match pint because of you idoits with the police because 'your all the same you stokies' is unbelievable. If you've something to prove or have a little testosterone to burn off get down the Gracie Barra bjj in stoke lets see what your made off without your '40 mates' behind you. Thought not....

Hooligans are fookin *****, ruined the game for years. What you get nowadays is nob heads in their 20's who think they are hard cause they wear shitty Stone Island and some adidas trainers, seem to have to give it the big one on away days. What a load of shit, people buy those shitty SI jackets to make people think they are hard.

Here in Australia some youngsters have a sickening infatuation with the whole culture of football related violence. I overheard some talking excitedly about trouble at an Arsenal game and asked them why they were so fascinated by people bashing each other peoples heads in…. they didn’t know. As a teenager, many of my contemporaries seemed to see becoming involved in fighting almost as a natural progression. As if it was a rite of passage. I’ve always felt isolated from that. I specifically remember, even as a nine year old, standing in Glebe Street watching Millwall and Stoke’s hooligans fighting and being confused that so many people felt the need to smash people’s faces in over what was, essentially, wanting a different team to win a game of football. Violence at football has resulted in lives damaged, people even killed. It has given police the excuse ( but not justification I hasten to add) to treat supporters as second class citizens. There is nothing positive about football violence.

I'm glad you Stokies readily accept you were never at the races and were Johny come latelys in the hooliganism world, a trip to Stoke was seen as a school outing like Derby or Cov away, Utd were always at the forefront, funny now people think we're just full of day trippers, was'nt always like that and we can still be a tough place to visit as you well know!

I can't believe anyone can miss walking around a ground looking out for some knob with a god complex. Let's face it, hooliganism wasn't a 10 of you vs 10 of us in a place of your choosing. It was a bunch of drugged up knobs who be terrified to fight one on one looking around for a few easy targets and picking them up when they are on there own. Just a bunch of drugged up idiots who don't represent any of the tripe that goes into films

Just to even up the debate a little yes it is outdated, yes it is inevitably pointless, and yes in most ways I prefer it now. I'd hate to think of any of my sons taking the risks that I did, or running the gauntlet at the likes of Upton Park or Elland Road in the 70's and 80's, and getting a shedload of teeth kicked out as my mate Keith did at Elland Road.
As for it always being 'groups' or 'firms' as the modern world would call them, it simply wasn't always that way.
More often than not it would be me and Keith, my oppo back then. Home or away we would seek out opposing fellas and jump them. It was almost always one on one except for when others decided to join in on either side. I am not proud of it nor ashamed. It was the way it was back then, and you either got out of the way or stood your ground. Anyone who had any sense carried something as there's always someone bigger and stronger than you, or you are outnumbered.
As sid pointed out. It does tend to help if you are skilled in the martial arts, especially if you are only 5'11 and at that time I was thankfully.
The problem is that there is so much shite written about it, so many crap films that are just boys own stories, and too many who say they were there when they quite simply either were not, or were just a bystander.
The one thing the OP does rightly mention as something special was the edge the games had back then.
If you've never experienced it don't knock it as the adrenaline rush was just the ultimate high.
And for the record. I NEVER did drugs, and very few of the lads from the late 70's early 80's did.
Dunno what happened to Keith so if you ever see a rough looking fella who looks as if he's just stepped out of the woods with no teeth then that might just be him. Tell him Stoke is a shithole and if you end up on your back looking at the sky and wondering why it will probably be him ;D

Sometimes, usually around Stoke, you would ask the time or make some form of conversation, or you'd just hang around with your ears open. Away from home you did the opposite. It's also usually quite obvious by someones demeanour when they are off their own turf and it's what regional accents and dialects were made for ;D I think the modern terminology would be bushwhackers. The streets around Upton Park in particular were always full of them. They even used to appear from behind parked cars and block both ends of the street off.
