Some great replies on here but I think the main point of the thread has been missed. How can someone that says something out of line to another player get a stiffer punishment than someone who puts in a nasty tackle that could end a fellow players career? Obviously neither is right but the latter has far worse consequences on the person on the receiving end. I don't even know where to start with that You say people are missing the point, I'd suggest it is you that is SEVERELY missing the point, you either can't or won't understand the seriousness of racism (I'll go for the latter)

Mmm....Personally I would prefer verbal abuse every time than a bad tackle causing severe injury and physical pain....and I get mistaken for being a foreigner..!
As John Barnes said ,'' Removing Blatter won't change peoples perception/attitude in relation to such issues.''

Yes, I'd like to see him face the same punishment as a fan. But I don't think it's quite that simple, because a season-long ban for a player is a more draconian punishment than a season-long ban for a fan. A footballer facing such a ban could see his career destroyed; a fan would just have to find something else to do on his Saturday afternoons. I'm not trying to defend Terry of course, or put forward a case for him getting off lightly. I'm sorry but we can't live in a society where a persons punishment for a crime differs to another person because of the job they do. If I get arrested by the old bill for having a gram of coke in my pocket or for stealing a car tonight, then I'll (quite righly) get the same punishment that a footballer would, how that punishment then impacts on our individual lives as a whole is something else entirely. We should all be treated EQUAL in the eyes of the law and that includes when we've been caught being racist. I like where you're coming from and want to agree with you because I like the idea of Terry having a lengthy ban from all football grounds, but I don't believe there's an across-the-board set punishment for making racist remarks? In other words each case will be dealt with on its own merits, with the authorities deciding how long the offender deserves to be banned for, or how much they should be fined - taking into account their personal circumstances, and the circumstances of their offence. So somebody running down the stadium steps repeatedly chanting racist stuff in full view of everyone would get a longer ban than someone who can barely be seen making a single monkey noise, for example. I'd have thought anyway. Happy to be corrected if anyone knows better. Anyway assuming that's correct, the authorities first have to decide how Terry's offence ranks against offences by fans who've received lengthy bans. In my view they would also have to assess whether a relatively shorter ban for Terry (say ten games), with public humiliation, maybe community service and a huge fine donated to an anti-racism charity, is going to hurt him as much as a season-long ban would hurt the racist fan. If we can agree it will, I'm inclined to say that punishment would fit his crime. Finally, if one punishment fits all ... say Terry was fined 3 million quid for his behaviour ... should the average man on the street be fined 3 million quid if he did the same offence?

Tackles are part and parcel of the game, most instances a broken leg is unintentional. Racism shouldn't be part of the game at all.

It shouldn't be an issue at all, 'raising awareness' makes it an issue. It's all handbags and a complete fucking waste of time.
